Message Point: God is in control and is guiding and directing our lives.
Focus Passage: I Samuel 16:14-23
Supplemental Passage: ’For I know the plans that I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ’plans for welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a hope. (Jeremiah 29:11 NASB)
Introduction: Relate personal journey of missions in West Africa from country to country, not realizing God was giving us experience to deal with the real task He had for us.
I. God’s Favor
a. David had already been anointed king (v 13)
b. David’s reputation made him noticed by men (v 18)
II. God’s Preparation
a. David had no formal education or understanding of being king (v 19 with the flock)
i. Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6 NASB)
b. God had David placed in the king’s inner circle (vs 21-22)
i. The king’s heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD; He turns it wherever He wishes. (Proverbs 21:1 NASB)
III. God’s Purpose
a. God wanted David to be king
b. God wanted David to be prepared & equipped
c. God wants to prepare, equip and direct your life, too.
i. for it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure. (Philippians 2:13 NASB)
ii. With Your counsel You will guide me, And afterward receive me to glory. (Psalms 73:24 NASB)
Invitation: The only “ability” of David that God was interested in was David’s “avail-ability.” David could have refused his anointment and could have played bad for Saul, but God had other plans for him since he loved God and wanted to serve Him.
