Proud Look Sept. 9,07

Proverbs 6:17

“No Trespassing” sign in West Texas, with the ranchers name signed in blood red

next to the warning:

STOP. I know you’re thinking about crossing this gate. What you should know is

that if the Coyotes, Cactus, Mesquite, Heat, Dust, or Rattlers don’t get you, I

will.

We have been given a similar warning in our lives.

Literally haughty or lofty eyes

A proud look is the idea that we are better than others.

Proverbs 16:18 “Pride goes before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a

fall.”

During the Battle of the Wilderness in the Civil War, Union general John

Sedgwick was inspecting his troops. At one point he came to a parapet, over

which he gazed out in the direction of the enemy. His officers suggested that

this was unwise and perhaps he ought to duck while passing the parapet.

"Nonsense," snapped the general. "They couldn’t hit an elephant at this dist--."

A moment later Sedgwick fell to the ground, fatally wounded.

E.

Pali, this bull has killed me." So said Jose Cubero, one of Spain’s most

brilliant matadors, before he lost consciousness and died.

Only 21 years old, he had been enjoying a spectacular career. However, in this

l958 bullfight, Jose made a tragic mistake. He thrust his sword a final time

into a bleeding, delirious bull, which then collapsed. Considering the struggle

finished, Jose turned to the crowd to acknowledge the applause. The bull,

however, was not dead. It rose and lunged at the unsuspecting matador, its horn

piercing his back and puncturing his heart.

Just when we think we’ve finished off pride, just when we turn to accept the

congratulations of the crowd, pride stabs us in the back. We should never

consider pride dead before we are. Craig Brian Larson.

Isaiah 14:13-14 says

For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my

throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the

congregation, in the sides of the north: 14 I will ascend above the heights of

the clouds; I will be like the most High. 1

I will… I will…, I will… Five times this me-istic being named himself above God.

Satan told Eve…You will be like God. Genesis 3:4-5

The problem with a person who thinks he or she is perfect --they have no room

for improvement. They will not come to or seek God.

It is said of Uzziah in II Chronicles 26:16 “But when he was strong, his

heart was lifted up to his destruction: for he transgressed against the LORD his

God, and went into the temple of the LORD to burn incense upon the altar of

incense.”

Struck with leprosy. From that day forward!

That’s the problem with pride it will eventually take you into other sins!!
