LAW OF PROBABILITY: Okay, let’s lay out one and only one scenario. If you would like to make up your own, feel free (remember to get student feedback here on numerical guessing—make them the center of information gathering here—not us). Since this is the second week, feel free to have the students pick out five of their own prophecies—really have them do it, then put it to match (if they pick it out, then they will read through them and become familiar). I do have a 2nd example here to follow (but we should honestly have them do it since this is the 2nd week). If they can come up with it, then they will be able to use the chart when witnessing to their friends.

THE EXAMPLE:

A) If we were to flip a coin, what are the odds of it becoming heads? ½ correct? What are the odds of it becoming heads again? Yep, ½ again! Now what are the odds of heads popping up TWO times in a row? Well in math, ½ multiplied by ½ equals ¼ right? We take the 2 and the denominator and multiply it by the other 2.

B) Now that we have that simple measure, what would be the odds of having heads 4 times in a row (pause here—you will also want to make sure that they all have their notebooks/scratch paper)? Well, ½ times ½ times ½ times ½ equals 1/16. There is a ONE in SIXTEEN chance of getting heads FOUR times in a row. Make sense?

C) So, WHAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE? How many times in a row would be impossible for heads to come up randomly? Could heads pop up 500 times in a row? Could heads pop up 5000 times in a row? If I flipped a coin every second for the rest of my life, what would be the maximum number I could come up with? Of course, we don’t know, but we all if we are honest would have to agree that at some certain number it would be impossible! It is impossible for a coin to be flipped 10,000 times in a row and end up heads each time, it’s impossible. And for someone to say “nothing is impossible,” then, they just don’t understand statistical odds. If heads were to pop up on a coin 10,000 times in a row—something was rigged. That is the only plausible way.

D) Now, let’s apply the same law of probability to Jesus. Let’s take a look at some of the prophecies, just a couple, and see what we come up with, let’s see how impossible the Savior really happens to be.

THE PROPHECIES CONCERNING JESUS:

A) 1. HE WOULD TEACH IN PARABLES: Who teaches in parables? I mean, how do people teach? Well, pastors tend to have a 4 point outline, math teachers build upon what was learned the previous day, history teachers teach chronologically, English teachers teach in written expression, Debate Professors teach persuasively, and even the Greek rhetoric professors during the age of Jesus had sort of a Socratic dialogue. If I personally had 7 teachers a year for my 13 years of schooling, adding to that all my college teachers, I have not yet had a parable-teller in my 200 teachers that I have had during my lifetime. In fact, I don’t know of any! The only potential parable teller I have ever heard of would be a joke-telling soothsayer at some Renaissance festival—and those still technically aren’t parables. So what are the odds? Let’s go with 1/1000 on that on.

B) 2. HE WOULD HAVE A HEALING MINISTRY: You know what? It’s not easy to have a healing ministry. Very, very few religious leaders throughout history have ever had anything close to being called a healing ministry. Not Gandhi, not hardly anyone. And those who claim to be Christians and do indeed profess to have a healing ministry aren’t always really producing a healing ministry, if you know what I mean. I’d say the odds on Christ having a healing ministry is probably 1 in over a Million, but let’s just call it 1/500,000 to be safe.

C) TEACH IN PARABLES + HEALING MINISTRY = 1/1000 x 1/500,000 = 5,000,000,000

D) 3. BETRAYED FOR 30 PIECES OF SILVER: What’s the over/under on this one? Come on! There are thousands of different types of coins and bartering systems created throughout history. To nail not only the correct type of coin but also the correct amount? Well, this fact all by itself is enough for me to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God. Papez odds call this 1/1,000,000, what about you?

E) PARABLES + HEALING MINISTRY + 30 PIECES OF SILVER = 1/1000 x 1/500,000 x 1/1,000,000 = 5,000,000,000,000,000.

F) 4. RODE ON THE BACK OF A DONKEY TO HIS DEATH: I know this is abbreviated from last week and this lesson carries a bit less description. But…”the messiah will ride a donkey on his way to his death?” What? Come one! There is no practical way for this number to ever be equated to any numerical system in my opinion. This one is another one that to me is uncalculatable Nonetheless, I’ll call it 1/1,000,000 (by the way, has anyone else in the history of the world ever rode on the back of a colt on his way to a city full of cheering people who will all turn around and kill him on false charges in just a matter of hours?).

G) 5. THE SUN DARKENED: There’s an 80’s song called Total Eclipse of the Heart. And eclipses do happen. But if this was a natural-occurring eclipse (and I’m not saying that it is), then what are the odds of someone calling it for the exact moment Jesus stops breathing (back when societies had no way to figure that out). Well, if an eclipse is 1/365 or about one per year (which they actually happen less often than that), than calling it has to at the very least that number times 100,000. I’ll call it 1/365,000.

THE FINAL TALLY (OF JUST 5 PROPHECIES): 1/1000 x 1/500,000 x 1/1,000,000 x 1/1,000,000 x 1/365,000. I’lll let you do the math. Hint, it won’t work on the calculator.

AND THAT’S JUST 5 OF THE PROPHECIES!

JESUS IS THE SON OF GOD!
