CONFRONTING UNSOUND DOCTRINE-I—1Timothy 1:3-11

Attention/Need:

Any businessman knows that there are things/practices etc. that will not work for their company. The company is designed & built around a particular product or service OR a particular attitude or mindset rightly reflects that of the company. Anything outside of these bounds is inadmissible.

Likewise, certain aspects of production(the proper presentation of God’s truth) are to characterize the Church.

Paul charged/enlisted/compelled Timothy to enforce Christian doctrine in the church at Ephesus.

Unsound Christian doctrine(within the church) must be confronted.

At Its SOURCE(:3)

Explanation: (:3) Aberrant Teacher

:3—“As I urged you when I went into Macedonia--remain in Ephesus that you may charge some that they teach no other doctrine,”

Paul had previously spoken with or written Timothy, “when” he had entered Macedonia. As he was making that expedition, Paul had “urged” Timothy to “remain in Ephesus.” Timothy’s purpose in Ephesus was to continue to “charge some” regarding proper/sound Christian teaching.

“Some”(See :6) are recognized for an ability to teach God’s truth. There must have been elements of aberrant teaching within the Ephesian church or at least a threat of its presence. These elements probably arose thru those referred to as ‘the circumcision.’

‘The circumcision’ were mainly Jews, who were strict adherents of the Mosaic Law, unaccepting of & thus misunderstanding Jesus. These promoted, pressured, & enforced the Law upon Christians, looking with disdain at the prospect of freedom in Christ by faith alone, particularly for any outside of national Israel(Php. 3:4-14).

Php. 3:4-14—“though I also might have confidence in the flesh. If anyone else thinks he may have confidence in the flesh, I more so: circumcised the eighth day, of the stock of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of the Hebrews; concerning the law, a Pharisee; concerning zeal, persecuting the church; concerning the righteousness which is in the law, blameless. But what things were gain to me, these I have counted loss for Christ. Yet indeed I also count all things loss for the excellence of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord, for whom I have suffered the loss of all things, & count them as rubbish, that I may gain Christ & be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith; that I may know Him & the power of His resurrection, & the fellowship of His sufferings, being conformed to His death, if, by any means, I may attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already attained, or am already perfected; but I press on, that I may lay hold of that for which Christ Jesus has also laid hold of me. Brethren, I do not count myself to have apprehended; but one thing I do, forgetting those things which are behind & reaching forward to those things which are ahead, I press toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.”

Gal. 2:1-5—“Then after fourteen years I went up again to Jerusalem with Barnabas, & also took Titus with me. And I went up by revelation, & communicated to them that gospel which I preach among the Gentiles, but privately to those who were of reputation, lest by any means I might run, or had run, in vain. Yet not even Titus who was with me, being a Greek, was compelled to be circumcised. And this occurred because of false brethren secretly brought in (who came in by stealth to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage), to whom we did not yield submission even for an hour, that the truth of the gospel might continue with you.”

Notably, there are “some” of ‘the circumcision’(the Jews) who are faithful in Christ. These rise above observance of the Law, accepting its fulfillment in Christ & are thus supportive of Paul’s work & ministry(Col. 4:7-11).

Col. 4:7-11—“Tychicus, a beloved brother, faithful minister, & fellow servant in the Lord, will tell you all the news about me. I am sending him to you for this very purpose, that he may know your circumstances & comfort your hearts, with Onesimus, a faithful & beloved brother, who is one of you. They will make known to you all things which are happening here. Aristarchus my fellow prisoner greets you, with Mark the cousin of Barnabas (about whom you received instructions: if he comes to you, welcome him), & Jesus who is called Justus. These are my only fellow workers for the kingdom of God who are of the circumcision; they have proved to be a comfort to me.”

The church had specific, separational “doctrine” in place at this time. This doctrine came by means of the apostles. The apostles(of whom one was Paul) all witnessed Jesus in the flesh & were given unique & specific revelations in order to birth the Church.

1Cor. 15:7-11—“After that He was seen by James, then by all the apostles. Then last of all He was seen by me also, as by one born out of due time. For I am the least of the apostles, who am not worthy to be called an apostle, because I persecuted the church of God. But by the grace of God I am what I am, & His grace toward me was not in vain; but I labored more abundantly than they all, yet not I, but the grace of God which was with me. Therefore, whether it was I or they, so we preach & so you believed.”

2Cor. 12:1-7—“It is doubtless not profitable for me to boast. I will come to visions & revelations of the Lord: I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago--whether in the body I do not know, or whether out of the body I do not know, God knows--such a one was caught up to the third heaven. And I know such a man--whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows-- how he was caught up into Paradise & heard inexpressible words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter. Of such a one I will boast; yet of myself I will not boast, except in my infirmities. For though I might desire to boast, I will not be a fool; for I will speak the truth. But I refrain, lest anyone should think of me above what he sees me to be or hears from me. And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance of the revelations, a thorn in the flesh was given to me, a messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I be exalted above measure.”

2Cor. 11:5—“For I consider that I am not at all inferior to the most eminent apostles.”

2Cor. 12:11-12—“I have become a fool in boasting; you have compelled me. For I ought to have been commended by you; for in nothing was I behind the most eminent apostles, though I am nothing. Truly the signs of an apostle were accomplished among you with all perseverance, in signs & wonders & mighty deeds.”

Eph. 2:19-22—“Now, therefore, you are no longer strangers & foreigners, but fellow citizens with the saints & members of the household of God, having been built on the foundation of the apostles & prophets, Jesus Christ Himself being the chief cornerstone, in whom the whole building, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord, in whom you also are being built together for a dwelling place of God in the Spirit.”

Argumentation:

Acts 19:1-7—“And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples he said to them, “Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?” So they said to him, “We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit.” And he said to them, “Into what then were you baptized?” So they said, “Into John’s baptism.” Then Paul said, “John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.” When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, & they spoke with tongues & prophesied. Now the men were about twelve in all.”

Evidently some were teaching that John’s Baptism was sufficient.

Acts 19:8-10—“And he went into the synagogue & spoke boldly for three months, reasoning & persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God. But when some were hardened & did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them & withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus. And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews & Greeks.”

Mat. 18:15-20—““Moreover if your brother sins against you, go & tell him his fault between you & him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen & a tax collector. Assuredly, I say to you, whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven, & whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven. Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.””

Churches have systems(Deacons, Committees) in place designed to circumvent disunity per Mat. 18:15-20/Confront at its SOURCE

Sometimes this breaks down...as at a church where the local papers presented a pastor as so belligerent that when asked to leave, he remained even to the point of both church & pastor threatening litigation in secular court/Attempts to force the church(& churches forcing pastors) into a particular pattern or mold into which they are unwilling to move/Confront the problem at its SOURCE

Note: 1Cor. 6:5-8—“I say this to your shame. Is it so, that there is not a wise man among you, not even one, who will be able to judge between his brethren? But brother goes to law against brother, and that before unbelievers! Now therefore, it is already an utter failure for you that you go to law against one another. Why do you not rather accept wrong? Why do you not rather let yourselves be cheated? No, you yourselves do wrong and cheat, and you do these things to your brethren!”

At Its FAULT(:4)

Explanation: (:4)

:4—“nor give heed to fables & endless genealogies, which cause disputes rather than godly edification which is in faith.”

The “some” mentioned above are to be further admonished/encouraged NOT to give any voice to “fables” or “endless genealogies”. This is a further signal that Paul is concerned about the unbelieving circumcision, as Jews would find it important to gain authority thru genealogies. This is because the Jews were subdivided in the promised land to specific land allotments by their various tribes. These tribes being descended from Jacob by Rachel & Leah. Also at the Year of Jubilee, everything would revert back to its original tribal ownership. It was important/vital that national Israel maintain her genealogical histories.

In all likelihood certain family stories would also be maintained in order to back up such genealogies. Great pride would result regarding such. Example: 1Chron.—Listings of names & association with certain kings &/or events key to Israel’s history. This would be a means of garnering respect or support for one’s belief.

Unfortunately the above combination would tend to elevate tribe/family against those out of the fold(such as Gentiles). After the passage of time, there would necessarily be pure guesswork & family tradition maintained to fill the unknown or uncertainties in the family line.

Paul thus wants Timothy to realize that a person’s Jewish heritage, though not irrelevant, can indeed be devisive when it becomes the focus. Disputes can thus take the place of Timothy’s true purpose in the Church— “godly edification.” The church is to be composed of individuals who seek to honor God with every aspect of their lives. This edification is a sincere life-long process undertaken by serious Christians bound to one another being called out as the Church—“Edification” is the management of a household.

Such building up of the body begins in the individual thru their remaining “in faith.” The faith” being that which is centered “in” the Lord Jesus Christ(:1, 2).

“Give heed to/Pay attention to/Devote to”—prosecw—1) To bring to, bring near—1a) To bring a ship to land, & simply to touch at, put in; 2) To turn the mind to, attend to be attentive—2a) To a person or a thing: of caring for, providing for; 3) To attend to one's self, i.e. to give heed to one's self—3a) give attention to, take heed; 4) To apply one's self to, attach one's self to, hold or cleave to a person or a thing. Strong—(figuratively) To hold the mind (nouv implied) towards, i.e. Pay attention to, be cautious about, apply oneself to, adhere to.

“Fables/Myths”—muyov—1)A speech, word, saying; 2)A narrative, story. Strong—A tale, i.e. fiction ("myth").

“Endless”—aperantov—That can not be passed through, boundless, endless. Strong—Unfinished, i.e. (by implication) Interminable. Used 1X.

“Genealogies”—genealogia—A genealogy, a record of descent or lineage. Strong—Tracing by generations, i.e. "Genealogy".

“Cause/Minister/Give rise/Promote”—parecw—1) To reach forth, offer; 2) To show, afford, supply; 3) To be the authors of, or to cause one to have—3a) To give, bring, cause one something either favorable or unfavorable, to occasion; 4) To offer, show or present one's self; 5) To exhibit or offer on one's own part. Strong—To hold near, i.e. Present, afford, exhibit, furnish occasion.

“Disputes/Questions/Mere speculation/Controversies”—zhthsiv—1)A seeking; 2)Inquiry; 3)A questioning, debate; 4)A subject of questioning or debate, matter of controversy. Strong—A searching (properly, the act), i.e. A dispute or its theme.

“Edification/Edifying/Furthering the administration/Work”—oikonomia—The management of a household or of household affairs. 1) (the act of) building, erection. Strong—confirmation. Used 1X.

“in”—en—1) In, by, with etc. Strong—a primary preposition denoting (fixed) Position (in place, time or state), & (by implication) Instrumentality (medially or constructively), i.e. a relation of rest (intermediate between eiv & ek); "in," at, (up-)on, by, etc.

“Faith”(See :5)—pistiv—1) Conviction of the truth of anything, Belief; in the NT Of a conviction or belief respecting man's relationship to God & divine things, generally with the included idea of trust & holy fervor born of faith & joined with it; 2) Fidelity, faithfulness. Strong—Persuasion, i.e. Credence; Moral conviction....; abstractly, Constancy in such profession; by extension, The system of religious (Gospel) truth itself.

Argumentation:

1Tim. 4:1-7—“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits & doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, & commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe & know the truth. For every creature of God is good, & nothing is to be refused if it is received with thanksgiving; for it is sanctified by the word of God & prayer. If you instruct the brethren in these things, you will be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished in the words of faith & of the good doctrine which you have carefully followed. But reject profane & old wives’ fables, & exercise yourself toward godliness.”

Worldly wisdom sounds good/spiritual & may even parallel God’s truth, but it either takes God completely out of the picture or severely limits Him making Him anemic. Thereby painting a false picture so that God in effect becomes god.

At Its PURPOSE(:5)

Explanation/Argumentation: (:5)

:5—“Now the purpose of the commandment is love from a pure heart, from a good conscience, & from sincere faith,”

A. LOVE—i. Heart(pure)—ii. Conscience(good)—iii. Faith(sincere)

Paul’s reference to “the commandment” here is to the “doctrine” of :3. This doctrine is not merely a declaration of someone’s whimsey, but rather has a specific “purpose.”

The goal of Christian doctrine is that a person & people of God would embody & exemplify self-giving agape “love.”

Such godly “love” can only be lived out as it is expressed &/or arises from three sources. The sources for the attainment of godly “purpose” in the Christian are 1)a “pure heart,” 2)a “good conscience,” & 3) a “sincere faith.”

“Now”—de—Conj.—1) But, moreover, &, etc. Strong—a primary particle (adversative or continuative); But, &, etc.

“Purpose/End/Goal”—telov—1) End—1a) Termination, the limit at which a thing ceases to be (always of the end of some act or state, but not of the end of a period of time), 1b) The end—1b1) The last in any succession or series, 1b2) Eternal, 1c) That by which a thing is finished, its close, issue, 1d) The end to which all things relate, the aim, purpose; 2) Toll, custom (i.e. indirect tax on goods). Strong—properly, The point aimed at as a limit, i.e. (by implication) The conclusion of an act or state (termination [literally, figuratively or indefinitely], Result [immediate, ultimate or prophetic], purpose); specifically, An impost or levy (as paid).

“Commandment/Instruction/Command”—paraggelia—1) Announcement, A proclaiming or giving a message to; 2) A charge, a command. Strong—A mandate. Used 5X.

“Love”—agaph—N. f.—1) Brotherly love, affection, good will, love, benevolence; 2) Love feasts. Strong—Love, i.e. Affection or benevolence; specially (plural) A love-feast.

i. HEART(pure)

A “Pure heart” is unstained by the world & the sin in which it resides.

Js. 1:27—“Pure & undefiled religion before God & the Father is this: to visit orphans & widows in their trouble, & to keep oneself unspotted from the world.”

Js. 4:4—“Adulterers & adulteresses! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Whoever therefore wants to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.”

Mat. 5:8—“Blessed are the pure in heart, For they shall see God.”

1Jn. 3:15-19—“Whoever hates his brother is a murderer, & you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him. By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. But whoever has this world’s goods, & sees his brother in need, & shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him? My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed & in truth. And by this we know that we are of the truth, & shall assure our hearts before Him.”

1Jn. 2:15-17—“Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, & the pride of life--is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, & the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.”

“Pure”—kayarov—Clean, pure. Denotes freedom from defilements, of the flesh & the world. Strong—Clean (literally or figuratively).

“Heart”—kardia—1) The heart—1a) That organ in the animal body which is the centre of the circulation of the blood, & hence was regarded as the seat of physical life, 1b)Denotes the centre of all physical & spiritual life, 2b) The centre & seat of spiritual life—2b1) The soul or mind, as it is the fountain & seat of the thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavours, 2b2) Of the understanding, the faculty & seat of the intelligence, 2b3) Of the will & character, 2b4) Of the soul so far as it is affected & stirred in a bad way or good, or of the soul as the seat of the sensibilities, affections, emotions, desires, appetites, passions, 1c) Of the middle or central or inmost part of anything, even though inanimate Strong—The heart, i.e. (figuratively) The thoughts or feelings (mind); also (by analogy) the middle.

ii. CONSCIENCE(good)

A “Good conscience” is not only distinguishing between God’s determination of good & bad, but decisively choosing the right because it is your desire to do so. A person with a “good conscience” does the right thing.

1Tim. 4:1-2—“Now the Spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits & doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron,”

Heb. 9:8-14—“the Holy Spirit indicating this, that the way into the Holiest of All was not yet made manifest while the first tabernacle was still standing. It was symbolic for the present time in which both gifts & sacrifices are offered which cannot make him who performed the service perfect in regard to the conscience-- concerned only with foods & drinks, various washings, & fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation. But Christ came as High Priest of the good things to come, with the greater & more perfect tabernacle not made with hands, that is, not of this creation. Not with the blood of goats & calves, but with His own blood He entered the Most Holy Place once for all, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of bulls & goats & the ashes of a heifer, sprinkling the unclean, sanctifies for the purifying of the flesh, how much more shall the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered Himself without spot to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works to serve the living God?”

1Pet. 2:18-24—“Servants, be submissive to your masters with all fear, not only to the good & gentle, but also to the harsh. For this is commendable, if because of conscience toward God one endures grief, suffering wrongfully. For what credit is it if, when you are beaten for your faults, you take it patiently? But when you do good & suffer, if you take it patiently, this is commendable before God. For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that you should follow His steps: “Who committed no sin, Nor was deceit found in His mouth”; who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness--by whose stripes you were healed.”

1Pet. 3:15-17—“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, & always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you, with meekness & fear; having a good conscience, that when they defame you as evildoers, those who revile your good conduct in Christ may be ashamed. For it is better, if it is the will of God, to suffer for doing good than for doing evil.”

“Good”—agayov—1) Of good constitution or nature; 2) Useful, salutary; 3) Good, pleasant, agreeable, joyful, happy; 4) Excellent, distinguished; 5) Upright, honorable

“Conscience”—suneidhsiv—N. f.—1)The consciousness of anything; 2)The soul as distinguishing between what is morally good & bad, prompting to do the former & shun the latter, commending one, condemning the other. Strong—from a prolonged form of suneidw; Co-perception, i.e. Moral consciousness“Sincere”—anupokritov—Unfeigned, undisguised, sincere. Strong—Undissembled, i.e. Sincere--Without dissimulation (hypocrisy), Unfeigned. Used 6X.

iii. FAITH(sincere)

“Sincere faith” is an un-hypocritical & unpretentious trust in the things of God’s revealed will.

Gal. 5:6—“For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision avails anything, but faith working through love.”

2Tim. 1:3-5—“I thank God, whom I serve with a pure conscience, as my forefathers did, as without ceasing I remember you in my prayers night & day, greatly desiring to see you, being mindful of your tears, that I may be filled with joy, when I call to remembrance the genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois & your mother Eunice, & I am persuaded is in you also.”

Heb. 10:19-23—“Therefore, brethren, having boldness to enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, by a new & living way which He consecrated for us, through the veil, that is, His flesh, & having a High Priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience & our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful.”

Isa. 29:13-14—“Therefore the LORD said: “Inasmuch as these people draw near with their mouths And honor Me with their lips, But have removed their hearts far from Me, And their fear toward Me is taught by the commandment of men, Therefore, behold, I will again do a marvelous work Among this people, A marvelous work & a wonder; For the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, And the understanding of their prudent men shall be hidden.””

Mat. 15:7-9—““Hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy about you, saying: ‘These people draw near to Me with their mouth, And honor Me with their lips, But their heart is far from Me. And in vain they worship Me, Teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’””

1Pet. 1:3-9—“Blessed be the God & Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible & undefiled & that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, & glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible & full of glory, receiving the end of your faith--the salvation of your souls.”

“Sincere”—anupokritov—Unfeigned, undisguised, sincere. Strong—Undissembled, i.e. Sincere--Without dissimulation (hypocrisy), Unfeigned. Used 6X.

“Faith”(See :4)—pistiv—1) Conviction of the truth of anything, Belief; in the NT Of a conviction or belief respecting man's relationship to God & divine things, generally with the included idea of trust & holy fervor born of faith & joined with it; 2) Fidelity, faithfulness. Strong—Persuasion, i.e. Credence; Moral conviction (of religious truth, or The truthfulness of God or a religious teacher), especially Reliance upon Christ for salvation; abstractly, Constancy in such profession; by extension, The system of religious (Gospel) truth itself.
