The DICHOTOMY(:9-12)

Explanation: (:9-12) Disparity/Separation/Contrast/Corruption vs. Perfection

:9—“This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.”

Dichotomy—a division or contrast between two things that are or are represented as being opposed or entirely different.

:9-10 contrasts :11-12 & vice-versa.

The following 4 verses concisely reiterate 6:1-8 while granting slightly more in regard to Noah’s character as it relates to God.

Noah was a man after God’s own heart. His behavioral characteristics were a testimony to a trust in his God.

*Noah exemplified God in that he was recognized & characterized as “a just man.” He lived this trait before his God & his fellow man.

*Noah was also considered by God to be “perfect” within all those “in his generations.” That is, Noah did what he did because he was compelled by his God to do so.

*Noah was also recognized as one who “walked” in the same direction as God—his choices mimicked those of God. Noah paralleled God as much as any of fallen humanity could... or rather he “walked” as God had intended mankind to “walk.” He was ‘yoked’ with God as closely as anyone could be.

“Genealogy”—hdlwt to-led-aw'—1) Descendants, results, proceedings, generations, genealogies—1a) Account of men & their descendants—1a1) Genealogical list of one's descendants, 1a2) One's contemporaries, 1a3) Course of history (of creation etc), 1b) Begetting or account of heaven (metaph). Strong—(plural only) Descent, i.e. Family; (figuratively) history.

“Just”—qydu tsad-deek'—1) Just, lawful, righteous—1a) Just, righteous (in government), 1b) Just, right (in one's cause), 1c) Just, righteous (in conduct & character), 1d) Righteous (as justified & vindicated by God), 1e) Right, correct, lawful.

Strong—Entire (literally, figuratively or morally); Also (as noun) integrity, truth.

“Generations”—rwd dowr—1) Period, generation, habitation, dwelling—1a) Period, age, generation (period of time), 1b) Generation (those living during a period), 1c) Generation (characterised by quality, condition, class of men), 1d) Dwelling-place, habitation. Strong—properly, A revolution of time, i.e. An age or generation; also a dwelling.

“Walked”—Klh halak haw-lak'—1) To go, walk, come. Strong—a primitive root; To walk (in a great variety of applications, literally & figuratively).

:10—“And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, & Japheth.”

Noah has 3 sons. Their names are reiterated here as from 5:32.

*Here is a man who “walks with God” & is raising three sons to do the same. He could not “walk with God” & neglect his family’s relationship with the Almighty loving salvific God.

“Shem”—Mv Shem—Shem = "name." name; Shem, a son of Noah (often includ. his posterity).

“Ham”—Mx khawm—Ham = "hot." Strong—Hot (from the tropical habitat); Cham, a son of Noah; also (as a patronymic) his descendants or their country.

“Japheth”—tpy yeh'-feth—Japheth = "opened." Strong—from htp paw-thaw'; expansion; Jepheth, a son of Noah; also his posterity.

:11—“The earth also was corrupt before God, & the earth was filled with violence.”

“The earth” “was corrupt” according to God but not according to the majority of men. As a result of their corruption, the world had become “filled with violence.” God had allowed the violence to escalate to the point that nothing could be done to alleviate it aside from His Divine intervention.

Every corner of the earth was infected with & effected by man’s corruption. It can be said per Rom. 8:19-22, that the entirety of creation did not escape man’s corruption until man himself does! Thereby “the earth”—every part of creation—experiences the violence resulting from man’s corruption.

“Earth”(See :12, :13 2X17 2X—compare hmda :20)—Ura 'eh'-rets—1) land, earth—1a) Earth—1a1) whole earth (as opposed to a part), 1a2) earth (as opposed to heaven), 1a3) earth (inhabitants), 1b) Land—1b1) country, territory, 1b2) district, region, 1b3) tribal territory, 1b4) piece of ground, 1b5) land of Canaan, Israel, 1b6) inhabitants of land, 1b7) Sheol, land without return, (under) world, 1b8) city (-state), 1c)Ground, surface of the earth—1c1) ground, 1c2) soil, 1d)(in phrases)—1d1) people of the land, 1d2) Space or distance of country (in measurements of distance), 1d3) Level or plain country, 1d4) land of the living, 1d5) end(s) of the earth, 1e) (Almost wholly late in usage)—1e1) lands, countries—1e1a) Often in contrast to Canaan. Strong—from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; The earth (at large, or partitively a land).

“Corrupt”(See :12 + :13, 17— “Destroy”)—txv shaw-khath'—V.—1) to destroy, corrupt, go to ruin, decay. Strong—a primitive root; To decay, i.e. (causatively) Ruin (literally or figuratively).

“Violence” (See :13)—omx chamac khaw-mawk'—1) Violence, wrong, cruelty, injustice. Strong—Violence; by implication, Wrong; by metonym Unjust gain.

:12—“So God looked upon the earth, & indeed it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted their way on the earth.””

God examined the entirety of the earth.

All flesh(mankind?) had so “corrupted” his own way that it can be said of them that they had proffered & thus chosen(as an act of the will) & lived out a legacy of corruption “on the earth.”

God had created man with the intent of his subduing & having dominion over all other created beings(1:26, 28). He had made mankind with the intent of their being fruitful & multiplying(1:28). Man had been made with the intent of accomplishing these things in the rightly placed power of life in the image of God(1:26-27).

But rather than fulfilling God’s intent, mankind instead “corrupted his way.” Man rejected the “way” of the very One who had created & ordained man’s purpose & direction.

“Looked”—har raw-aw'—1) To see, look at, inspect, perceive, consider. Strong—a primitive root; To see, literally or figuratively (in numerous applications, direct & implied, transitive, intransitive & causative).

“Indeed”—hnh hin-nay'—1) behold, lo, see, if.

“Corrupt”2X(See :11)—txv shaw-khath'—V.—1) To destroy, corrupt, go to ruin, decay. Strong—a primitive root; To decay, i.e. (causatively) Ruin (literally or figuratively).

“Flesh”(See :13, 17)—rsb baw-sawr'—N. m.—1) Flesh. Strong—Flesh (from its freshness); by extension, Body, person; also (by euphem.) The pudenda of a man.

“Way”—Krd deh'-rek—1) Way, road, distance, journey, manner. Strong—A road (as trodden); figuratively, A course of life or mode of action, often adverb.

Argumentation:

Our dichotomies(contradictory actions) are dealt with as we lay our destructive ways upon Jesus. As we submit to the control of the Holy Spirit....As we allow the cleansing blood of Jesus to restore our lives to His original intent.

Isa. 29:8—“It shall even be as when a hungry man dreams, And look--he eats; But he awakes, & his soul is still empty; Or as when a thirsty man dreams, And look--he drinks; But he awakes, & indeed he is faint, And his soul still craves: So the multitude of all the nations shall be, Who fight against Mount Zion.””

*1Pet. 2:9-17—“But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light; who once were not a people but are now the people of God, who had not obtained mercy but now have obtained mercy. Beloved, I beg you as sojourners & pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts which war against the soul, having your conduct honorable among the Gentiles, that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may, by your good works which they observe, glorify God in the day of visitation. Therefore submit yourselves to every ordinance of man for the Lord’s sake, whether to the king as supreme, or to governors, as to those who are sent by him for the punishment of evildoers & for the praise of those who do good. For this is the will of God, that by doing good you may put to silence the ignorance of foolish men-- as free, yet not using liberty as a cloak for vice, but as bondservants of God. Honor all people. Love the brotherhood. Fear God. Honor the king.”

Gal. 5:16-17—“I say then: Walk in the Spirit, & you shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusts against the Spirit, & the Spirit against the flesh; & these are contrary to one another, so that you do not do the things that you wish.”

The DESTRUCTION(:13)

Explanation: (:13)Absence/Presence

:13—“And God said to Noah, “The end of all flesh has come before Me, for the earth is filled with violence through them; & behold, I will destroy them with the earth.”

God spoke directly to Noah.

God told Noah that the “end of all flesh” will come because of the “violence” propagated by men. Mankind is not fulfilling his designed capability. He has relied upon his freewill to the extent that he has disregarded his very Maker.

God warned Noah that a calamity would occur soon.

God had to circumvent the consuming corruption of “all flesh.” The creator’s solution was to “destroy” the corrupting “flesh” inhabiting the earth. Not only the instigators of the violence, but also those creatures intimately tied to man’s corruption would be the recipients of God’s “destruction.”

“With the earth” signifies all breathing creatures that were created on the 5th & 6th days. ?Could this also possibly mean that “the earth” would be the very means of bringing in the destruction God sought?...or is this rather a consequence of English translation?

This seminally prepares us for the manner of God’s upcoming plan of destruction.

“End”—Uq qets—1) End—1a) End, at the end of (of time), 1b) End (of space). Strong—An extremity; adverbially (with prepositional prefix) After.

“Flesh/People”(See :12)—rsb baw-sawr'—N. m.—1) Flesh. Strong—Flesh (from its freshness); by extension, Body, person; also (by euphem.) The pudenda of a man.

“Come before”—awb bow—V.—1) To go in, enter, come, go, come in. Strong—a primitive root; To go or come (in a wide variety of applications).

“Filled”(See :11)—alm maw-lay'—1) To fill, be full. Strong—a primitive root, To fill or (intransitively) be full of, in a wide application (literally & figuratively).

“Violence”(See :11)—omx chamac khaw-mawk'—1) Violence, wrong, cruelty, injustice. Strong—Violence; by implication, Wrong; by metonym Unjust gain.

*“Me” & “Through them/Because of them”—Mynp paw-neem'—N. m.—1) Face. Strong—plural (but always as singular) of an unused noun [hnp paw-neh'; from hnp paw-naw'—V.—To turn or face]; The face (as the part that turns); used in a great variety of applications (literally & figuratively).

“Behold”—Nh hen—Interj.—1) Behold, lo, though.—Hypothetical particle—2) If. Strong—a primitive particle; Lo!; also (as expressing surprise) If.

“Destroy”(See :11, 12—“Corrupt(ed)” & :17)—txv shaw-khath'—V.—1) To destroy, corrupt, go to ruin, decay. Strong—a primitive root; To decay, i.e. (causatively) Ruin (literally or figuratively).

“With”—ta ayth—1)With, near, together with.

Argumentation:

Jer. 51:11-18—“Make the arrows bright! Gather the shields! The LORD has raised up the spirit of the kings of the Medes. For His plan is against Babylon to destroy it, Because it is the vengeance of the LORD, The vengeance for His temple. Set up the standard on the walls of Babylon; Make the guard strong, Set up the watchmen, Prepare the ambushes. For the LORD has both devised & done What He spoke against the inhabitants of Babylon. O you who dwell by many waters, Abundant in treasures, Your end has come, The measure of your covetousness. The LORD of hosts has sworn by Himself: “Surely I will fill you with men, as with locusts, And they shall lift up a shout against you.” He has made the earth by His power; He has established the world by His wisdom, And stretched out the heaven by His understanding. When He utters His voice-- There is a multitude of waters in the heavens: “He causes the vapors to ascend from the ends of the earth; He makes lightnings for the rain; He brings the wind out of His treasuries. Everyone is dull-hearted, without knowledge; Every metalsmith is put to shame by the carved image; For his molded image is falsehood, And there is no breath in them. They are futile, a work of errors; In the time of their punishment they shall perish.”

Hag. 2:6-7—““For thus says the LORD of hosts: ‘Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven & earth, the sea & dry land; ‘& I will shake all nations, & they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, & I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the LORD of hosts.”

*Heb. 12:25-29—“See that you do not refuse Him who speaks. For if they did not escape who refused Him who spoke on earth, much more shall we not escape if we turn away from Him who speaks from heaven, whose voice then shook the earth; but now He has promised, saying, “Yet once more I shake not only the earth, but also heaven.” Now this, “Yet once more,” indicates the removal of those things that are being shaken, as of things that are made, that the things which cannot be shaken may remain. Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence & godly fear. For our God is a consuming fire.”

*2Cor. 10:2 -6—“But I beg you that when I am present I may not be bold with that confidence by which I intend to be bold against some, who think of us as if we walked according to the flesh. For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments & every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, & being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.”

The REMNANT(:14-18)

Explanation:(:14-18)Salvation

:14—“Make yourself an ark of gopherwood; make rooms in the ark, & cover it inside & outside with pitch.”

God gave Noah instructions directly related to the pending destruction of the earth.

Obviously, God is staging a plan of deliverance for some thru Noah as he has “found grace in the eyes of the Lord”(:8).

He was to “make” an “ark.” The building of this ark was Noah’s specific calling. This moment of Noah’s life shifted to take on a new & daring direction. He was now to become determined & focused toward personally seeing to building something according to God’s directives.

It was to be a very specific ark or box(container). This “ark” or container was to be constructed of a particular kind of wood known/recognized as “gopherwood.”

This particular “ark” was to have “rooms” or ‘nesting places’ built into it, so its size is now hinted at.

It was to be “covered” “inside & out” with “pitch”/bitumen/asphalt. A viscous liquid that is flexible &water-tight upon drying. Natural “pitch” has a viscosity similar to cold molasses.

“Make”(See :15, 16)—hse aw-saw'—V.—1) To do, fashion, accomplish, make; 2) (Piel) To press, squeeze. Strong—a primitive root; To do or make, in the broadest sense & widest application.

“Ark”—hbt tay-baw'—N. f.—1) Ark—1a) Vessel which Noah built, 1b) Basket vessel in which Moses was placed. Strong—perhaps of foreign derivation; A box.

Strong—A house (in the greatest variation of applications, especially family, etc.).

“Outside/Without”—Uwx khoots—1) Outside, outward, street, the outside. Strong—from an unused root meaning to sever; properly, Separate by a wall, i.e. Outside, outdoors.

“Pitch”(See “Cover”)—rpk ko'-fer—N. m.—1) Price of a life, ransom, bribe; 2) Asphalt, pitch (as a covering); 3) The henna plant, name of a plant (henna?); 4) Village. Strong—properly, A cover, i.e. (literally) A village (as covered in); (specifically)Bitumen (as used for coating), & The henna plant (as used for dyeing); figuratively, A redemption-price.

:15—““And this is how you shall make it: The length of the ark shall be three hundred cubits, its width fifty cubits, & its height thirty cubits.”

The ark was to be built according to a particular length, breadth & height(~300x50x30), which was measured in cubits & determined by God.

The measurements were in cubits(~18” American). Thus the ark was to be 450 X 75 X 45ft. The ark was roughly ½ the length of a standard cruise liner which can be upwards of 1000 ft. yet the beam of the ark was slightly less than the same being ~100ft.

“its volume was 1.54 million cubic feet… This is the equivalent volume of 522 standard American railroad stock cars, each of which can hold 240 sheep.” (522 stock cars x 240 sheep each = 125,280 total sheep).”—Jonathan Sarfati(AiG) per Chris Jordan(Sermon Central)

“The total available floor space on the Ark would have been over 100,000 square feet, which would be more floor space than in 20 standard-sized basketball courts.”...“as few as 2,000 animals may have been required on the ark.”...“three trains hauling 69 cars each would have ample space to carry the 50,000 animals, filling only 37% of the ark.”—ChristianAnswers.net

Now Noah is becoming aware of the task at hand. This project could not be denied or hidden from others.

“Length”—Kra o'rek'—1) Length—1a) Physical length, 1b) Of time; 2) Forbearance, self-restraint (of patience).

:16—““You shall make a window for the ark, & you shall finish it to a cubit from above; & set the door of the ark in its side. You shall make it with lower, second, & third decks.”

The ark was to have a single “window” or roof(HCSB) which was to be finished to within 1 cubit(18’’)from the top. Perhaps this was a vent of sorts or at least some means of allowing light into the ark which was able to be opened or uncovered as in Gen. 8:6.

Gen. 6:16(HCSB)— “You are to make a roof, finishing [the sides of the ark] to within 18 inches [of the roof]. You are to put a door in the side of the ark. Make it with lower, middle, & upper [decks].”

The “it” here probably refers to the entire ark itself rather than to the “window.”—J. Gill

“A window only a cubit square could not possibly be intended; for rhu is not synonymous with Nwlx(Gen. 8:6), but signifies, generally, a space for light, or by which light could be admitted into the ark, & in which the window, or lattice for opening & shutting, could be fixed; though we can form no distinct idea of what the arrangement was.”—K&D

Gen 8:6—“So it came to pass, at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made.”

The nondescript “door” of the ark was to be situated in its side.

“it seems it was so large, that Noah, & those with him, could not shut it, but it was done by the Lord,...”—J. Gill

Inside the ark there were to be 3 decks including a lower, 2nd & 3rd.

God Himself would bring a flood upon the earth.

These “floodwaters” would destroy “all flesh.” The particular “flesh” facing destruction is that flesh “in which is the breath of life.” “All flesh in which is the breath of life” is descriptive of “everything” “on the earth.” These would all perish in the flood.

The target of living(air-breathing) flesh all existed “under heaven.”

*But...there will be an exception. There will be a remnant to survive the flood. God would make a covenant with Noah alone. Noah was to enter the finished ark with his wife, his sons & their wives. It had been mentioned twice previously that Noah had three sons(5:32; 6:10)—Shem, Ham & Japheth. This would account for only 8 people out of the entire populace of earth who would be saved from the impending destruction(7, 13).

Only with Noah—as head of his extended family—does God promise to “establish” His “covenant.” God’s covenant with Noah encompasses his entering the ark with that family.

“Establish”—Mwq koom—V.—Hiphil Perfect—1) To rise, arise, stand, rise up, stand up. Strong—a primitive root; To rise (in various applications, literal, figurative, intensive & causative).

“Covenant”—tyrb ber-eeth'—N. f.—1) Covenant, alliance, pledge. Strong—from hrb baw-raw'—V.—to feed, eat, consume(in the sense of cutting [like arb baw-raw'—V.—to create, shape, form]); A compact (because made by passing between pieces of flesh).

“Go into/Come into/Enter”(See “Bringing” :17; & “Come to you” :20)—awb bow'—V.—Qal Perfect—1) To go in, enter, come, go, come in. Strong—a primitive root; To go or come (in a wide variety of applications).

Argumentation:

*Isa. 1:9—“Unless the LORD of hosts Had left to us a very small remnant, We would have become like Sodom, We would have been made like Gomorrah.”

Rom. 9:27-29—“Isaiah also cries out concerning Israel: “Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, The remnant will be saved. For He will finish the work & cut it short in righteousness, Because the LORD will make a short work upon the earth.” And as Isaiah said before: “Unless the LORD of Sabaoth had left us a seed, We would have become like Sodom, And we would have been made like Gomorrah.””

*Rom. 11:1-10—“I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, “LORD, they have killed Your prophets & torn down Your altars, & I alone am left, & they seek my life”? But what does the divine response say to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.” Even so then, at this present time there is a remnant according to the election of grace. And if by grace, then it is no longer of works; otherwise grace is no longer grace. But if it is of works, it is no longer grace; otherwise work is no longer work. What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained it, & the rest were blinded. Just as it is written: “God has given them a spirit of stupor, Eyes that they should not see And ears that they should not hear, To this very day.” And David says: “Let their table become a snare & a trap, A stumbling block & a recompense to them. Let their eyes be darkened, so that they do not see, & bow down their back always.””

Eze. 6:6-10—““In all your dwelling places the cities shall be laid waste, & the high places shall be desolate, so that your altars may be laid waste & made desolate, your idols may be broken & made to cease, your incense altars may be cut down, & your works may be abolished. “The slain shall fall in your midst, & you shall know that I am the LORD. “Yet I will leave a remnant, so that you may have some who escape the sword among the nations, when you are scattered through the countries. “Then those of you who escape will remember Me among the nations where they are carried captive, because I was crushed by their adulterous heart which has departed from Me, & by their eyes which play the harlot after their idols; they will loathe themselves for the evils which they committed in all their abominations. “And they shall know that I am the LORD; I have not said in vain that I would bring this calamity upon them.””

The COMMITMENT(:18-22)

Explanation: (:18-22)

:19—““And of every living thing of all flesh you shall bring two of every sort into the ark, to keep them alive with you; they shall be male & female.”

Besides Noah’s family, there were to be 2 of every kind of animal in the ark with him. These co-riders were to be taken from “every living thing of all flesh.” It was Noah’s responsibility to see that these creatures would enter the ark—“you shall bring.” While in the ark they were to remain “alive.” It would defeat God’s purpose if even one “of all flesh” were to go missing & thus bring death to that particular “kind” of animal(:20).

The salvific nature of the ark is now fully implied. Noah’s ark will be the means of preserving the living creatures of the original creation(1:20-28).

Of “every living thing of all flesh” included only those creatures which Noah?(See :20—“will come to you”) would have recognized as reproducing sexually, as both “male & female” are entrusted to Noah’s purpose.

These would be the “every living thing of all flesh” which would fall easy victim to the flood.

The animals were to remain alive along with Noah & his family. The animals required pairing because they were to be male & female. This was to ensure that they would propagate when the flood was over.

“Everything”2X(See :17—“Every...thing”)—lk kol—1) All, the whole. Strong—properly, The whole; hence, All, any or every (in the singular only, but often in a plural sense).

“Living thing”(See :17— “of Life”)—yx khah'-ee—Adj.—1) Living, alive. N. m.—2) Relatives; 3) Life (abstract emphatic). N. f.—4) Living thing, animal; 5) Community. Strong—Alive; hence, Raw (flesh); Fresh (plant, water, year), Strong; also (as noun, especially in the feminine singular & masculine plural) Life (or living thing), whether literally or figuratively.

“Keep alive”(See :20)—hyx khaw-yaw'—V.—1) To live, have life, remain alive, sustain life, live prosperously, live for ever, be quickened, be alive, be restored to life or health. Strong—a primitive root [compare hwx khaw-vah']; To live, whether literally or figuratively; causatively, to revive.

“Male”—rkz zaw-kawr'—1)properly, Remembered, i.e. A male (of man or animals, as being the most noteworthy sex).

“Female”—hbqn nek-ay-baw'—1) Female—1a) Woman, female child, 1b) Female animal.

:20—““Of the birds after their kind, of animals after their kind, & of every creeping thing of the earth after its kind, two of every kind will come to you to keep them alive.””

Birds, animals, & creeping things were included in those male & female animals which would come to escape on the ark Noah would build.

God required that two of each “kind” would come to Noah. We do not know the particulars of Noah’s part in loading the ark.

The animals would “come to” Noah. Thus he would not have to search for & trap & collect. Noah’s calling was to, by faith, provide a place for them when the flood came. God did the rest.

“Birds/Fowls”—Pwe `owph—1) Flying creatures, fowl, insects, birds. Strong—A bird (as covered with feathers, or rather as covering with wings), often collectively. Same as in 1:21.

“Kind”3X—Nym miyn—1) Kind, sometimes a species (usually of animals). Groups of living organisms belong in the same created "kind" if they have descended from the same ancestral gene pool. This does not preclude new species because this represents a partitioning of the original gene pool. Information is lost or conserved not gained. A new species could arise when a population is isolated & inbreeding occurs. By this definition a new species is not a new "kind" but a further partitioning of an existing "kind.” Strong—from an unused root meaning to portion out; A sort, i.e. Species. Same as in 1:21.

“Animals/Cattle”—hmhb be-hay-maw'—N. f.—1) Beast, cattle, animal. Strong–from an unused root (probably meaning to be mute); properly, A dumb beast; especially any large quadruped or animal (often collective). Same as in 1:24.

“Creeping thing”—smr reh'-mes—1) Creeping things, moving things, creeping organism. Strong—A reptile or any other rapidly moving animal. Same as in 1:24.

“Earth” (compare Ura :11, 12, :13 2X, :17 2X)—hmda ad-aw-maw'—N. f.—1) Ground, land. Strong—from Mda; Soil (from its general redness).

From—Mda ’adam aw-dam'; to show blood (in the face), i.e. flush or turn rosy.

“Come to you”—(See “Bringing” :17; & “Go into” :18)—awb bow'—V.—Qal Imperfect—1) To go in, enter, come, go, come in. Strong—a primitive root; To go or come (in a wide variety of applications).

“Keep alive”(See :19)—hyx khaw-yaw'—V.—1) To live, have life, remain alive, sustain life, live prosperously, live for ever, be quickened, be alive, be restored to life or health. Strong—a primitive root [compare hwx khaw-vah']; To live, whether literally or figuratively; causatively, to revive.

:21—““And you shall take for yourself of all food that is eaten, & you shall gather it to yourself; & it shall be food for you & for them.””

Noah was to gather all edibles as “food” for himself—& presumably his family. The edibles that were to be gathered were also to be “food” for sustaining the animals.

“Take”—xql law-kakh'—Qal Imperative—1) To take, get, fetch, lay hold of, seize, receive, acquire, buy, bring, marry, take a wife, snatch, take away. Strong—a primitive root; To take (in the widest variety of applications).

“Food”(Compare hlka below)—lkam mah-ak-awl'—N. m.—1) Food, fruit, meat. Strong—An eatable (includ. provender, flesh & fruit).

From—lka aw-kal'(“Eaten”) below.

“Eaten/Edible”—lka aw-kal'—V.—Niphal Imperfect—1) To eat, devour, burn up, feed—1b) (Niphal), 1b1) To be eaten (by men), 1b2) To be devoured, consumed (of fire), 1b3) To be wasted, destroyed (of flesh). Strong— a primitive root; To eat (literally or figuratively).

“Gather”—Poa aw-saf'—V.—Qal Perfect—1) To gather, receive, remove, gather in. Strong—a primitive root; To gather for any purpose; hence, To receive, take away, i.e. Temove (destroy, leave behind, put up, restore, etc.).

“Food” (Compare lkam above)—hlka ok-law'—N. f.—1)Food. Used 18X.

:22—“Thus Noah did; according to all that God commanded him, so he did.”

Noah “did” everything that God desired. God’s certain & undeniable “command” was all Noah needed to enter & complete his journey by/into God’s will.

Indeed Noah was “a just man,” “perfect in his generations,” & “walked with God”(:9)...Otherwise this project/command/task would never have seen completion.

Likewise, if we are unfaithful, then God cannot bring His desire to completion thru us. How tragic that scenario is for others including ourselves!

If God speaks audibly(physically) to us rather than directly to our hearts(thru the Holy Spirit), then our attentions are not necessarily upon the things of God but upon ourselves; that is, until interrupted by His audible voice.

“Did”—hse aw-saw'—Qal Imperfect—1) To do, fashion, accomplish, make. Strong—a primitive root; To do or make, in the broadest sense & widest application.

“Commanded”—hwu tsaw-vaw'—Piel Perfect—1) To command, charge, give orders, lay charge, give charge to, order. Strong—a primitive root; (intensively) To constitute, enjoin.

Argumentation:

Mat. 7:15-23—““Beware of false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravenous wolves. You will know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes from thornbushes or figs from thistles? Even so, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, nor can a bad tree bear good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down & thrown into the fire. Therefore by their fruits you will know them. “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, & done many wonders in Your name?’ “And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’”

Mat. 12:47-50—“Then one said to Him, “Look, Your mother & Your brothers are standing outside, seeking to speak with You.” But He answered & said to the one who told Him, “Who is My mother & who are My brothers?” And He stretched out His hand toward His disciples & said, “Here are My mother & My brothers! For whoever does the will of My Father in heaven is My brother & sister & mother.””

Mat. 21:28-32—““But what do you think? A man had two sons, & he came to the first & said, ‘Son, go, work today in my vineyard.’ “He answered & said, ‘I will not,’ but afterward he regretted it & went. “Then he came to the second & said likewise. And he answered & said, ‘I go, sir,’ but he did not go. “Which of the two did the will of his father?” They said to Him, “The first.” Jesus said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that tax collectors & harlots enter the kingdom of God before you. For John came to you in the way of righteousness, & you did not believe him; but tax collectors & harlots believed him; & when you saw it, you did not afterward relent & believe him.”

Heb. 3:12-15—“Beware, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief in departing from the living God; but exhort one another daily, while it is called “Today,” lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we have become partakers of Christ if we hold the beginning of our confidence steadfast to the end, while it is said: “Today, if you will hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.””

Rev. 3:1-3—““And to the angel of the church in Sardis write, ‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God & the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, & strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. Remember therefore how you have received & heard; hold fast & repent. Therefore if you will not watch, I will come upon you as a thief, & you will not know what hour I will come upon you.”

Rev. 3:14-16—““And to the angel of the church of the Laodiceans write, ‘These things says the Amen, the Faithful & True Witness, the Beginning of the creation of God: “I know your works, that you are neither cold nor hot. I could wish you were cold or hot. So then, because you are lukewarm, & neither cold nor hot, I will vomit you out of My mouth.”

2Tim. 3:1-5—“But know this, that in the last days perilous times will come: For men will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, unloving, unforgiving, slanderers, without self-control, brutal, despisers of good, traitors, headstrong, haughty, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, having a form of godliness but denying its power. And from such people turn away!”

1Jn. 2:18-21—“Little children, it is the last hour; & as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us. But you have an anointing from the Holy One, & you know all things. I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, & that no lie is of the truth.”

Lk. 9:57-62—“Now it happened as they journeyed on the road, that someone said to Him, “Lord, I will follow You wherever You go.” And Jesus said to him, “Foxes have holes & birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.” Then He said to another, “Follow Me.” But he said, “Lord, let me first go & bury my father.” Jesus said to him, “Let the dead bury their own dead, but you go & preach the kingdom of God.” And another also said, “Lord, I will follow You, but let me first go & bid them farewell who are at my house.” But Jesus said to him, “No one, having put his hand to the plow, & looking back, is fit for the kingdom of God.””

Acts 5:17-32—“Then the high priest rose up, and all those who were with him (which is the sect of the Sadducees), and they were filled with indignation, and laid their hands on the apostles and put them in the common prison. But at night an angel of the Lord opened the prison doors and brought them out, and said, “Go, stand in the temple and speak to the people all the words of this life.” And when they heard that, they entered the temple early in the morning and taught. But the high priest and those with him came and called the council together, with all the elders of the children of Israel, and sent to the prison to have them brought. But when the officers came and did not find them in the prison, they returned and reported, saying, “Indeed we found the prison shut securely, and the guards standing outside before the doors; but when we opened them, we found no one inside!” Now when the high priest, the captain of the temple, and the chief priests heard these things, they wondered what the outcome would be. So one came and told them, saying, “Look, the men whom you put in prison are standing in the temple and teaching the people!” Then the captain went with the officers and brought them without violence, for they feared the people, lest they should be stoned. And when they had brought them, they set them before the council. And the high priest asked them, saying, “Did we not strictly command you not to teach in this name? And look, you have filled Jerusalem with your doctrine, and intend to bring this Man’s blood on us!” But Peter and the other apostles answered and said: “We ought to obey God rather than men. The God of our fathers raised up Jesus whom you murdered by hanging on a tree. Him God has exalted to His right hand to be Prince and Savior, to give repentance to Israel and forgiveness of sins. And we are His witnesses to these things, and so also is the Holy Spirit whom God has given to those who obey Him.””
