INTRODUCTION:

1. Matthew 28:18-20.

2. What makes the great commission great?

DISCUSSION:

I. It is great because of the one by whom it is given.

A. All authority includes legislative, judicial, and executive. Christ, being lawgiver, judge, and king, has authority in all three areas.

B. I Peter 3:22 - Christ rules in the heavenly realm. Revelation 1:5 – Christ is ruling over the kings of the earth.

II. It is great because of those to whom it is given.

A. Originally spoken to only eleven men.

B. By implication the great commission applies to us today. Those who were taught were to observe all things the apostles had been commanded. Would not this include carrying out the great commission? Also consider II Timothy 2:2.

III. It is great because of its extent.

A. Whereas the limited commission instructed Jesus’ disciples to teach the Jews (Matthew 10:5-6), the great commission instructed Jesus’ disciples to go to all nations, meaning all men everywhere. Mark 16:15 – every creature.

B. John 3:16 - Christ died for all men. Acts 10:34-35 – In matters of salvation, God is no respector of persons.

IV. It is great because of it purpose.

A. What should be the motive for our teaching? Seeking and saving the lost by preaching repentance and remission of sins (Luke 24:47). Consider Proverbs 11:30 – He that winneth souls is wise.

B. Hebrews 5:12 – We must prepare ourselves to teach. Also consider II Timothy 2:15.

CONCLUSION:

1. Matthew 28:18-20 – the great commission.
