A Personal Testimony

1 1 He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. 2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Psalms 91:1-2 (KJV) (Secret place)

a 10 But You have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil. Psalms 92:10 (NASB) (Fresh oil / anointing available)

b The Baptism of the Holy Spirit isn’t just for me, but all believers have this baptism.

aa May not be discussed much in Baptist circles, but it is in the Bible.

bb Over the next several Sunday nights and Wednesday nights we’re going to develop an understanding of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit. (Biblical & Historical perspective)

2 I want you to have a working biblical understanding of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

B Pray

I The Old Testament promised the Holy Spirit would come.

A John the Baptist, the last of the Prophets of the old covenant, was born and raised in an atmosphere saturated with the Holy Spirit.

1 He was born to Zacharias / Elizabeth (Both past child-bearing age) according to Luke 1.36. 36 "And behold, even your relative Elizabeth has also conceived a son in her old age; and she who was called barren is now in her sixth month. Luke 1:36 (NASB)

a Mary, Elizabeth’s cousin, came over (Both prego) when Mary came in the room the Holy Spirit manifested in Elizabeth. (41 When Elizabeth heard Mary's greeting, the baby leaped in her womb; and Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit.42 And she cried out with a loud voice and said, "Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb! Luke 1:41-42 (NASB)) and released a blessing on Mary & unborn Jesus.

b V. 41 says John leaped and the Holy Spirit filled his mom too.

2 46 And Mary said:"My soul exalts the Lord,47 And my spirit has rejoiced in God my Savior.48 "For He has had regard for the humble state of His bondslave ; For behold, from this time on all generations will count me blessed.49 "For the Mighty One has done great things for me; And holy is His name.50 "And His mercy is upon generation after generation Toward those who fear Him.51 "He has done mighty deeds with His arm; He has scattered those who were proud in the thoughts of their heart.52 "He has brought down rulers from their thrones, And has exalted those who were humble.53 "He has filled the hungry with good things ; And sent away the rich empty-handed.54 "He has given help to Israel His servant, In remembrance of His mercy,55 As He spoke to our fathers, To Abraham and his descendants forever." Luke 1:46-55 (NASB)

a Elizabeth continued to prophecy, Mary was filled and began to sing in the Spirit.

b After john was born, his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied. (67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit, and prophesied, saying:68 "Blessed be the Lord God of Israel, For He has visited us and accomplished redemption for His people,69 And has raised up a horn of salvation for us In the house of David His servant—70 As He spoke by the mouth of His holy prophets from of old—71 Salvation from our enemies, And from the hand of all who hate us;72 To show mercy toward our fathers, And to remember His holy covenant,73 The oath which He swore to Abraham our father,74 To grant us that we, being rescued from the hand of our enemies, Might serve Him without fear,75 In holiness and righteousness before Him all our days.76 "And you, child, will be called the prophet of the Most High; For you will go on before the Lord to prepare His ways ; 77 To give to His people the knowledge of salvation By the forgiveness of their sins,78 Because of the tender mercy of our God, With which the Sunrise from on high will visit us,79 To shine upon those who sit in darkness and the shadow of death , To guide our feet into the way of peace."Luke 1:67-79 (NASB))

c All of this activity of the Holy Spirit happened before Jesus was born.

B John was reared in an atmosphere were the Holy Spirit was manifest again & again.

1 As the promised forerunner (Spirit of Elijah) it’s interesting to note John the Baptist (God’s prophet of Spirit Baptism) was never released to do miracles. (41 And many resorted unto him, and said, John did no miracle: but all things that John spake of this man were true. John 10:41 (KJV))

a He preached Repent (3xs), Holy Spirit (3xs)

b His ministry was a “way preparer” of not only the Messiah, but also the Holy Spirit.

2 John’s last prophecy included the last prophecy of the old Covenant.

a (Baptism of Holy Spirit) 16 John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Luke 3:16 (NASB)

aa His last prophecy was the promise of Baptism of the Holy Spirit and fire.

bb Christians know the promise of John 3:16 but are practically oblivious to the powerful promise of Luke 3:16.

b In the Old Testament, the Holy Spirit would come & go from His people.

aa O.T. Holy Spirit was available to convict / save, but His abiding presence had yet to be given to all.

bb The O.T. prophesied the age of the Spirit.

c 28 "It will come about after this That I will pour out My Spirit on all mankind ; And your sons and daughters will prophesy, Your old men will dream dreams, Your young men will see visions. Joel 2:28 (NASB)

aa Isaiah 43.19 (19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. Isaiah 43:19 (KJV)) Promised God was going to do a “new thing” Isaiah 44.3 (3 'For I will pour out water on the thirsty land And streams on the dry ground; I will pour out My Spirit on your offspring And My blessing on your descendants; Isaiah 44:3 (NASB)) tells what the new thing is ... outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

C When Jesus, the promised Messiah, died and rose again, He did so for all who would believe & be saved.

1 His coming ushered in the “new thing,” Age of the Spirit.

a Through Christ’s death / resurrection the Holy Spirit was released on humankind like never before imagined, “New Age”

b Mankind can know God more intimately, in the Secret place, like never before.

aa We are a “chosen generation,” “royal priesthood”

bb More than “new creatures” ; fully empowered & fully filled with the Holy Spirit.

2 Jesus, the second Adam, recovered / restored what our daddy Adam had lost / broke

a We belong to a new race of people ... the church!

b We have a new daddy, King!

D The O.T. promised the Savior and the Spirit.

1 When Jesus was stabbed on the cross water & blood poured out: water & blood speaks of “new birth”

a Blood is our New Birth / Salvation through of blood of Jesus.

b Water is the Spirit empowered work of God that birthed the church ... Church was birthed on Calvary.

2 When the temple veil was torn & resurrected believers were seen after Christ’s crucifixion (50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.51 And behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth shook and the rocks were split.52 The tombs were opened, and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised;53 and coming out of the tombs after His resurrection they entered the holy city and appeared to many. Matt 27:50-53 (NASB)) The walls between Spiritual realm & earthly realm had been breached.

a The Holy Spirit could come & stay with God’s people

b The Spiritual Kingdom invaded the earth. (Still invading)

E Fifty days later, 120 people were in an upper room in Jerusalem.

1 Could this have been the same room they had fled to / hid in after the crucifixion and contemplated going back to their old lives

a Ever though about running away, going back to old life?

b 120 people, under command from Jesus where there waiting, “One accord” changed people

aa No longer hiding in dear of being found to be followers of Christ.

bb Now following Jesus command to wait for the outpouring of the Holy Spirit.

cc BTW: Not just men in the upper room... women too

c There was changed women and men in that room when the rivers of prophecy rushed together. (1 When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place.2 And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.3 And there appeared to them tongues as of fire distributing themselves, and they rested on each one of them.4 And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues , as the Spirit was giving them utterance .Acts 2:1-4 (NASB)) - Promised baptism of the Holy Spirit became available to all believers.

2 Jesus promised this mighty baptism to those who obeyed Him.

a 5 Now there were Jews living in Jerusalem, devout men from every nation under heaven.6 And when this sound occurred, the crowd came together, and were bewildered because each one of them was hearing them speak in his own language .7 They were amazed and astonished, saying, "Why , are not all these who are speaking Galileans?8 "And how is it that we each hear them in our own language to which we were born?9 "Parthians and Medes and Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia ,Acts 2:5-9 (NASB)

b When the Holy Spirit came, it didn’t look like a Sunday service.

aa A howling wind, tongues of fire, filling of the Spirit, people speaking in tongues, 3k saved.

bb The church was birthed in Charismatic glory.

3 We don’t need another Pentecost, we need to receive the one we had!

a Jesus is not glorified & the baptism of the Holy Spirit is available for everybody.

b My prayer is you seek to understand, seek to know / experience.
