Introduction

A

B When you get saved, new birth by the Spirit, you have experienced the first work of God in your life.

1 Many people teach that you that you have all that God has for you.

a There is a second work, Baptism of the Holy Spirit.

aa The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is part of Jesus Christ in your life.

bb 16 John answered and said to them all, "As for me, I baptize you with water; but One is coming who is mightier than I, and I am not fit to untie the thong of His sandals; He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. Luke 3:16 (NASB) , John described Jesus as the baptizer in the Holy Spirit.

b The only people who will receive all that Jesus has for them are those who desire to embrace this promise.

c When you get saved the indwelling of the Holy Spirit is yours, but for what is in you (H.S.) The Baptism of the H.S. is what allows what is inside you to move out of our lives.

2 Baptism means to be immersed

a Means that the Holy Spirit that was “inside” you is now “upon” you.

b The mere mention of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit causes some Christians / Preachers to laugh / turn off / see you as a Charismatic Fanatic.

c I believe there is more to being saved than your initial conversion experience or water Baptism. (Not everyone does)

I Is there one Baptism?

A The traditional view of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit is what Paul mentions in 1 Cor. 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.1 Cor 12:13 (NASB)

1 Eph 4:5, is cited as only one Baptism. 5 one Lord, one faith, one baptism, Eph 4:5 (NASB)

a Traditional teaching stress these texts as proof that all the talk of the Baptism of the Holy Spirit / second work of God grace is foolishness.

2 However, “The proof is in the pudding”

a As we look at the lives of believers in the N.T. we see there were people who got saved, experienced water baptism, but had not received the Spirit baptism.

b They experienced something that doesn’t fit into the traditional view of the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

B We see a progression of Spirit-filled believers in Acts.

1 5 The statement found approval with the whole congregation ; and they chose Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit, and Philip, Prochorus, Nicanor, Timon, Parmenas and Nicolas , a proselyte from Antioch. Acts 6:5 (NASB), The apostles chose Stephen to lead the men who were going to minister to the widows based partially at least on him “being filled with the Holy Spirit.”

a In Acts 8, the disciple in Jerusalem heard these were people who had heard / received the Gospel so they sent Peter & John. (14 Now when the apostles in Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent them Peter and John, Acts 8:14 (NASB))

aa These two men from the inner circle got there to discover many had got saved, baptized but hadn’t experienced the falling of the Holy Spirit. (15 who came down and prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus .Acts 8:15-16 (NASB)

bb This “receiving of the Holy Spirit” was a separate work!

b Acts 19, Paul goes to Ephesus, where apparently some were teaching two baptisms. (John & Jesus)

1 It happened that while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul passed through the upper country and came to Ephesus, and found some disciples.2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."3 And he said, "Into what then were you baptized?" And they said, "Into John's baptism."4 Paul said, "John baptized with the baptism of repentance, telling the people to believe in Him who was coming after him, that is, in Jesus."5 When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.6 And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Spirit came on them, and they began speaking with tongues and prophesying. Acts 19:1-6 (NASB)

aa Paul sits them straight on some things. (One baptism after conversion)

bb Baptism of the Holy Spirit was a different work, experience

II The Baptism of the Holy Spirit is a fresh start.

A 2 Of the doctrine of baptisms, and of laying on of hands, and of resurrection of the dead, and of eternal judgment. Heb 6:2 (KJV)

2 instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. Heb 6:2 (NIV)

2 of the teaching of baptisms, of laying on also of hands, of rising again also of the dead, and of judgment age-during, Heb 6:2 (YLT)

“The doctrine / teaching of baptisms” (plural) There are at least 3 baptisms for every believer: Positional, pictorial, & powerful.

1 13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.1 Cor 12:13 (NASB), Paul is speaking about positional baptism.

a Positional is the sense that we are moved from one place to another, our place as one willfully separate from God into our place as children of God.

b The Holy Spirit places us in the church, body of Christ, the family of God.

c This is a one-time / once & for all act that unites us to the body / bride of Christ.

2 Pictorial is when you get baptized in water after your positional baptism.

a Testimony of my baptism

aa Testimony

bb I didn’t understood the mystery of what he said, but I find it mavelous today.

b Some have doubted the important / purpose of baptism

aa A woman got baptized, sinned after baptism, thought she needed to be baptized again so she’d still be saved.

bb Water baptism doesn’t save you! (No salvific work)

c It’s a symbolic event. (Death, burial, resurrection, new life)

aa Public statement of an inner commitment

bb There is only one water baptism after salvation.

3 The powerful baptism is the baptism of the Holy Spirit given by Jesus.

a The baptism of the Holy Spirit was.. Promised by father, bestowed by the son, & performed by the Holy Spirit. (The trinity God is involved fully with the baptism of the Holy Spirit)

b This power baptism is a baptism with the Holy Spirit and fire.

aa When you experience it there comes power & anointing on you so you can carry out your part of Gods work.

bb You received the Holy Spirit at conversion, the Holy Spirit is released to work in your life at the baptism of the H.S.

B Many would say the positional baptism of 1 cor 12:13 is the same as the powerful baptism of Luke 3:16.

1 Where is the power of God on our people?

a Unmistakable seal of God’s power & fire?

b Something doesn’t add up.

2 Most Christians have experienced positional (conversion) pictorial (water) baptisms... but many lack the baptism of power. (Filling of the H.S. to release power.)

II The Holy Spirit SEALS US!

A 13 In Him , you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed , you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, Eph 1:13 (NASB) One of the synonyms of the baptism of the H.S. is “seal of the Holy Spirit”

1 The sealing / seal is subsequent to conversion / salvation.

a Sealing to us is like sealing a jar or can.

b In the first century, the seal was a stamp of authenticity.

aa Baptism of H.S. is / was God’s outward action that gives authenticity to every believer.

bb There are 3 main meanings to “seal” authenticity, authority, & ownership.

2 Authenticity is proof an item is genuine.

a Nike Swoosh, Chanel vs. knock offs.

b When the mark / seal is on the item it is a mark of higher quality / greater value because of mark / seal.

c The baptism of the H.S. with it’s subsequent manifestations is Gods seal demonstrating His inner work on the life of a believer.

3 22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. John 20:22 (NASB), Risen Jesus breathes over them & they receive the Holy Spirit, yet in Acts, He promises them another work of the Spirit, the Baptism of the Holy Spirt. 4 Gathering them together, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for what the Father had promised, "Which," He said, "you heard of from Me;5 for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now."Acts 1:4-5 (NASB)

a Why go to Jerusalem? Had the message, heart, faith, received the Holy Spirit... what more did they need?

b They needed God’s authority to do the work they were called to do.

B The baptism of the H.S. is seen as an outward sign.

1 But when they believed Philip preaching the good news about the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, they were being baptized, men and women alike. Acts 8:12 (NASB), Saved / baptized / but no Holy Spirit. (16 For He had not yet fallen upon any of them; they had simply been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus. Acts 8:16 (NASB))

a Acts 9:17 (NASB) Paul was saved but didn’t receive the Baptism until 3 days later when hands were laid upon him.

b 2 He said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" And they said to him, "No, we have not even heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."Acts 19:2 (NASB), Same pattern. (saved, baptized, laid hands on them, & they were baptized by the Spirit.)

2 The second work of the Holy Spirit is God’s seal / mark that we are His, belong to Him, & we’re not ashamed of His power.

III The baptism opens heaven.

A 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.Eph 1:14 (NIV), describes the work of the Spirit as “the guarantee or earnest” of our inheritance. 14 Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory. Eph 1:14 (KJV)

1 The word guarantee / earnest has several meanings.

a Down payment, promise, engagement ring

b The Gk. Is much stronger!

aa A portion that is to come

bb Our “inheritance” is in the Spirit realm.

2 IL. Buy a house you make an offer to buy.

a Once you & the seller agree you pay “earnest money”

b Once the money goes from you to the seller, the money is in escrow until closing, the seller cannot the offer: once “earnest money” has been paid out, the deal is essentially done.

c In antiquity, the “earnest money” was known as “God’s penny” or “God’s Gold.”

aa When money was exchanged for property, the money guaranteed the sale. (Both parties)

bb Money showed both parties were “earnest” about the sell.

B Our heavenly father is so serious, sincere, heartfelt in His longing to be with us / for us to be with Him that He is willing to give us a small portion of the abundance He has for us.

1 How? By giving us the Baptism of the Holy Spirit, as “earnest payment” a small portion of the inheritance that is in heaven.

a 4 to obtain an inheritance which is imperishable and undefiled and will not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 1 Peter 1:4 (NASB), Our inheritance in it’s fullness awaits us in heaven.

b In heaven there is health (not sickness); life (not death); abundance (not poverty); love (not hate); joy (not sorrow)!

2 The baptism of the Holy Spirit moves to Earth now a portion of what is coming.

a The baptism of the Holy Spirit moves healing, blessing, gifts, fullness, love, life, joy, & hope to earth now.

b The baptism of the H.S. brings the promises of God to earth.

c Guarantee of everything He has promised.

3 The baptism of the H.S. opens heaven & brings the resources of the Spiritual realm into your present circumstances.

a 20 Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?21 For since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not come to know God, God was well-pleased through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe.22 For indeed Jews ask for signs and Greeks search for wisdom; 1 Cor 1:20-22 (NASB) we see that an “anointing” comes to those “seated” or “marked” and are baptized by the H.S.

b Can you be saved without the baptism? Yes.

c Why wouldn’t a saved person want it?
