Point: Get beyond hear say

Introduction

Isn’t it funny how we can be affiliated with something or someone for lengths of time but never really know intricate details? If not maybe Peter’s Confession of Faith and the disciples lack of it will be? 1. Who do people say that the Son of Man is? 2. But who do you [yourselves] say that I am? Jesus instructs his star pupils to investigate the speculating people of Caesarea Philippi, although being fully aware that this process will only help the disciple’s gain revelation of His deity.

Man’s relationship with God began in eternity. It manifested in the practical since in Eden! Eph 1:4 According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundations of the world that we should be holy and without blame before him in love. Genesis 1:26 Let us make man in our own image, after our likeness: The result of Adams fall caused death, and spiritual separation from God. Adams fall repositioned humanity, giving Satan a new lease on earth, but the “blood”

through the atoning death of Jesus Christ at Galgatha reconciled man back to the Father.

Authentic worship.. according to (John 4:24) God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. "We must understand the purpose of it, making a quality commitment to it, and be a living sanctuary for it". As were the disciples - our relationship with Jesus Christ was not created by census, but rather by selection. Rom 8:15 but ye have received the Spirit of adoption. Galatians 4:5-7 To redeem them that were under the law that we might receive the adoption of sons.

The gospel of Jesus Christ is an indictment against the people, the church, and the disciples. The critical analysis doesn’t draw its conclusion with the Sadducees and Pharisees but with common people who praise, worship, and also follow Jesus! The validity of Jesus’ questions gives credence to the importance of information, identification, and revelation. We’re admonished through the disciples to gather our facts before we can adequately submit reference information. Jesus also says, “though we have knowledge of the scriptures and church experience; this doesn’t qualify us for knowing Him”. Galatians 5:7 Ye did run well; who did hinder you that ye should not obey the truth? We’re all a work in progress. (16:15). Jesus encourages every believer to depend on God the Father, never feelings, emotions, or intricacy of your six senses. We are to give recognition to the Holy Spirit for being at work in our hearts!

I. Detect what you hear (16:13)

Detect: to find out the action or character of:

Greek: Shekach (shek-akh) - Disclosure of a covered or forgotten thing, to discover:

A. Jesus’ challenges the disciple’s faith by exposing their misinterpretation of His purpose, and His deity.

B. St. Matthew 16:13 When Jesus came into the coasts of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, saying, Whom do men say that I the Son of Man am? Prayer is not just a place to make our request known to God, but also a place to commune with him through the presence of the Holy Spirit!

C. It’s not enough for us to relish in the exposure to Jesus alone, we must know him through the intimacy of our relationship to transcend closeness, and proximity.

D. Like the disciples, we see the gifts, talent, and ability of Jesus but fail to discern His purpose, power, and position as the Christ.

1. How be it when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth. (John 16:13)

2. English: Truth - facts corresponding with actual events or happenings

3. Greek: Omnam, (Om-nawm’) - indeed, no doubt, surely

4. When your reputation precedes you, people will always have reason to talk... Jesus, who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; (10:38); Isaiah 9:6-7; Matt 1:21

A. Mark 8:27…And Jesus went out, and his disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked his disciples, saying…

II. Discern what you see (16:14)

And they said, Some say that thou art John the Baptist, some, Elijah, and others, Jeremiah, or one of the prophets.

1. Discern: To perceive by sight or some other since or intellect:

2. Hebrew: Biyn (bene) – Understanding

B. The question is to the disciples, not the Pharisees or those apposing the doctrine of Jesus Christ. These are the beloved disciples that follow Him, live with Him, walk with Him, talk with Him, eat with Him, and study the scriptures with Him.

C. The disciples discerned Him as Jesus, but not as Christ.

D. It’s a harsh dilemma and sad reality when we perform well in participation, but fail to know Him through an in-depth relationship.

E. We can’t adequately advocate the cause of Jesus Christ without receiving revelation knowledge revealed by the Father through His Holy Spirit.

III. Determine what you believe 16:15

A. Determine: To settle or decide by an authoritative decision:

B. Hebrew: Charats (khaw-rats’) – To be alert, to decide

1.) Question: But whom say ye that I am? (16:15)

2.) None answered, save Peter by the Holy Spirit

3.) Answer: And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. (16:16)

4.) Internalization, Interpretation, and Revelation of truth

IV. Distinguish what you know (16:17-19)

A. Distinguish: to differentiate; Ginosko - to know, be resolved, perceive, be sure

B. And Simon Peter answered and said, Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God. Mk. 8:29; Acts 8:37; 1 John 4:15

C. Greek: Nous, nooce; the intellect, i.e. mind (divine or human; in thought, feeling, or will) but the Father’s revealed truth

1. Jesus implies that hearing alone isn’t enough, seeing isn’t believing, nor does feeling constitute fact

2. Jesus says to Peter, for flesh and blood hath not revealed this unto thee, but my Father, which is in heaven. (16:17)

3. Peter was exposed to the word of God Rom 10:17, Peter internalized the word of God by receiving spiritual interpretation 1Cor 5:7, lastly Peter received spiritual revelation of the word…Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: John 16:13; John 8:32; Matt 24:35; John 3:16

C. Hebrew: Ma-owz’ (Rock) a fortified place, defense;

1. Matthew 16:18 And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Rock in the Hebrew: Ma-owz’ - a fortified place, defense

2. Matthew 16:19 And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou hast shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven and whatsoever thou shalt loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. (John 14:1-3)

3. Questionable behavior in Praise, Honor, and Glory:

Jesus was an influential spiritual leader with marvelous intentions for them that await his arrival, and for those that anticipate his demise. (16:13)

A. Here we matriculate from diversity of ethnicity that encompasses this multi-cultural environment only to find a mass of zealous followers.

Are they a bible-based community?

4. Are they planted on the rock of salvation or are they merely a cast of religious fanatics fashioned by custom, tradition, and need! (Ezekiel 33:31; Matthew 15:8)

5. One thing’s for certain, the people that occupied this town don’t seem as vulnerable as the disciples…WHY? Primarily because of their rare acquaintance and association with Jesus. Many believed on the name of Jesus by faith, they heard of His goodness, kindness, and tender mercies, but the disciples knew Him

D. Lack of spiritual discernment in the faith base community

1. We prefer image, talent, and personality rather than the presence of God.

2. We dress the part, occupy offices, and ascend by positions, but don’t know God!

We have desecrated true worship by passing off ability, and entertainment as ministry; God has consequently been rejected, therefore this is treated as an abomination. These actions in consecrated places dedicated unto me has choked the hell out of many, leaving a spirit of detest, imitation, and disguise in the sanctuary of men” This has placed a stench in my nostrils, saith the Lord, for you never looked to me for reconciliation.

V. Conclusion (16:20)

I. Then charged he his disciples that they should tell no man that he was Jesus the Christ. [Ref] And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus charged them, saying, Tell the vision to no man, until the Son of man be risen again from the dead. (Matthew 17:9; Mark 8:30)

1. The doxology here is Jesus making an emphatic exit to Calvary

2. The final discourse clarifies the disciple’s contentment and the common people’s contingent faith.

1. Another phenomenon was witnessing the disciple’s disappointment through a test of faith to discover Jesus’ purpose as the Christ.

2. We learn not to embrace the philosophies of men, including major political influence of the Pharisees, and customs held so dear to common people.

3. Tradition is a detriment to any believer, diminishing insight, understanding, and spiritual discernment. 1Peter 2:9 But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should show forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvelous light.

4. We learn that effective witnesses are convinced of the fact that He is who he says He is, fully comprehending the purpose and strategy for which His kingdom is stabled.

5. Jesus commissioned the disciples to go further into the towns of Caesarea to gain in-depth knowledge of what the discussion consisted of. It would also provide a certainty and perspective for the spirit Caesarea carried concerning Jesus. Jesus was merely helping the disciples conjoin their faith with His under relative terms of why they carry the gospel message.
