Summary: To enumerate the acceptable spiritual tasks and activities for us as sons of the day.

I. EXORDIUM:

Are you of the light and day?

II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:

Believers

III. OBJECTIVES:

To enumerate the acceptable spiritual tasks and activities for us as sons of the day.

IV. TEXT:

1 Thessalonians 5:5-7 (Amplified Bible)

For you are all sons of light and sons of the day; we do not belong either to the night or to darkness.

Accordingly then, let us not sleep, as the rest do, but let us keep wide awake (alert, watchful, cautious, and on our guard) and let us be sober (calm, collected, and circumspect).

For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who are drunk, get drunk at night.

V. THESIS:

Acceptable spiritual tasks and activities for us as sons of the day.

VI. TITLE:

Sons of the light and day

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: Apostle Paul

B. Date written: 49 to 54 B.C. but uncertain

C. Purpose: to comfort believers and encourage them to a life of purity

D. To whom written: Thessalonica church

E. Main themes: Most personal of all of Paul's epistles

F. Keyword: Sanctification

1 Thessalonians 4:3 (Amplified Bible)

For this is the will of God, that you should be consecrated (separated and set apart for pure and holy living): that you should abstain and shrink from all sexual vice,

G. Key verses:

1 Thessalonians 3:12-13 (Amplified Bible)

And may the Lord make you to increase and excel and overflow in love for one another and for all people, just as we also do for you,

So that He may strengthen and confirm and establish your hearts faultlessly pure and unblamable in holiness in the sight of our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah) with all His saints (the holy and glorified people of God)! Amen, (so be it)!

1 Thessalonians 4:16-18 (Amplified Bible)

For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a loud cry of summons, with the shout of an archangel, and with the blast of the trumpet of God. And those who have departed this life in Christ will rise first.

Then we, the living ones who remain [on the earth], shall simultaneously be caught up along with [the resurrected dead] in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so always (through the eternity of the eternities) we shall be with the Lord!

Therefore comfort and encourage one another with these words.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

We are sons of the light, sons of the day.

Sons - children, son, son of pride, sons of light, one who is converted by another's instrumentality, a male descendant, male child, male issue of a parent.

Day - tame, light, gentle, time space between dawn and dark, whole 24 hours, a period.

Light - means luminousness, fire, to make manifest, to shine

A. We don't belong to the night or the darkness

"we do not belong either to the night or to darkness"

John 12:36 (Amplified Bible)

While you have the Light, believe in the Light [have faith in it, hold to it, rely on it], that you may become sons of the Light and be filled with Light. Jesus said these things, and then He went away and hid Himself from them [was lost to their view].

Acts 26:18 (Amplified Bible)

To open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may thus receive forgiveness and release from their sins and a place and portion among those who are consecrated and purified by faith in Me.

Isaiah 42:7 (Amplified Bible)

To open the eyes of the blind, to bring out prisoners from the dungeon, and those who sit in darkness from the prison.

Isaiah 42:16 (Amplified Bible)

And I will bring the blind by a way that they know not; I will lead them in paths that they have not known. I will make darkness into light before them and make uneven places into a plain. These things I have determined to do [for them]; and I will not leave them forsaken.

1. Darkness is "shadiness", "obscurity"

a. obscurity - that quality or state which renders anything difficult to be understood

b. state of being intellectually clouded, ignorance

c. shady - sheltered from the glare of light or sultry heat

B. Let us not be like others

"as the rest do,"

1. Asleep

"Accordingly then, let us not sleep, as the rest do,"

Sleep - to lie down to rest, to fall asleep

1 Corinthians 15:34 (Amplified Bible)

Awake [from your drunken stupor and return] to sober sense and your right minds, and sin no more. For some of you have not the knowledge of God [you are utterly and willfully and disgracefully ignorant, and continue to be so, lacking the sense of God’s presence and all true knowledge of Him]. I say this to your shame.

Ephesians 5:14 (Amplified Bible)

Therefore He says, Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall shine (make day dawn) upon you and give you light.

Isaiah 26:19 (Amplified Bible)

Your dead shall live [O Lord]; the bodies of our dead [saints] shall rise. You who dwell in the dust, awake and sing for joy! For Your dew [O Lord] is a dew of [sparkling] light [heavenly, supernatural dew]; and the earth shall cast forth the dead [to life again; for on the land of the shades of the dead You will let Your dew fall].

Ezekiel 37:11-12 (Amplified Bible)

Then He said to me, Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Behold, they say, Our bones are dried up and our hope is lost; we are completely cut off.

Therefore prophesy and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: Behold, I will open your graves and cause you to come up out of your graves, O My people; and I will bring you [back home] to the land of Israel.

1 Peter 4:7 (Amplified Bible)

But the end and culmination of all things has now come near; keep sound minded and self-restrained and alert therefore for [the practice of] prayer.

Revelation 16:15 (Amplified Bible)

Behold, I am going to come like a thief! Blessed (happy, to be envied) is he who stays awake (alert) and who guards his clothes, so that he may not be naked and [have the shame of being] seen exposed!

1 Corinthians 16:13 (Amplified Bible)

Be alert and on your guard; stand firm in your faith (your conviction respecting man’s relationship to God and divine things, keeping the trust and holy fervor born of faith and a part of it). Act like men and be courageous; grow in strength!

2 Timothy 4:5 (Amplified Bible)

As for you, be calm and cool and steady, accept and suffer unflinchingly every hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fully perform all the duties of your ministry.

Revelation 3:2 (Amplified Bible)

Rouse yourselves and keep awake, and strengthen and invigorate what remains and is on the point of dying; for I have not found a thing that you have done [any work of yours] meeting the requirements of My God or perfect in His sight.

3. Self-controlled

"and let us be sober (calm, collected, and circumspect)"

Philippians 4:5 (Amplified Bible)

Also [I desire] that women should adorn themselves modestly and appropriately and sensibly in seemly apparel, not with [elaborate] hair arrangement or gold or pearls or expensive clothing,

1 Peter 5:8 (Amplified Bible)

Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.

Self-controlled or sober means "to abstain from wine", "be discreet", "not intoxicated or overpowered by spiritous liquors", "not mad or insane", "not wild, visionary, or heated with passion", "regular, calm, not under the influence of a passion" , "serious, solemn" , "cure of intoxication"
