Hungry after Bethany?

Study of Mark 11

B. Date written: 58 B.C.

C. Purpose: To present JESUS of Nazareth as GOD's Suffering Servant, the Redeemer of the world

D. To whom written: Roman or Gentile Christians

E. Main Theme: CHRIST is the tireless servant of GOD and humanity.

F. Key word: Immediately

G. Key verse: Mark 10:45

Mark 10:45 (Amplified Bible)

10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to have service rendered to Him, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for (instead of) many.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. The following day

"On the day following,"

CHRIST spent overnight in Bethany, it was impossible for Him not to eat there, but the Bible was silent. Bethany being a house of dates must live up on her name, being full of dates.

Matthew 21:17 (New International Version)

21:17 And he left them and went out of the city to Bethany, where he spent the night.

Dates can also refer to figs, the one cursed by CHRIST.

Mark 11:13 (Amplified Bible)

11:13 And seeing in the distance a fig tree [covered] with leaves, He went to see if He could find any [fruit] on it [for in the fig tree the fruit appears at the same time as the leaves]. But when He came up to it, He found nothing but leaves, for the fig season had not yet come.

Bethany is also the home of Mary, Martha and Lazarus and JESUS was seen to lodged there. It's impossible Martha could not have offered food to JESUS.

Matthew 21:17 (Amplified Bible)

21:17 And leaving them, He departed from the city and went out to Bethany and lodged there.

John 11:1 (Amplified Bible)

11:1 NOW A certain man named Lazarus was ill. He was of Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

B. Coming away from Bethany

"when they had come away from Bethany,"

The Bible was silent, but we can think He lodged together with His twelve apostles in the house of Martha, Mary and Lazarus.

John 11:1 (Amplified Bible)

11:1 NOW A certain man named Lazarus was ill. He was of Bethany, the village where Mary and her sister Martha lived.

Or He may think opposite from us and He could lodged in the house of Simon the leper.

Matthew 26:6 (Amplified Bible)

26:6 Now when Jesus came back to Bethany and was in the house of Simon the leper,

Bethany being house of misery, really lived up to her name.

It is a miserably untidy and tumble-down village facing East on the Southeast slope of the Mount of Olives, upon the carriage road to Jericho.—International Standard Bible Encyclopedia

CHRIST will spend overnight in your soul to remove the misery and we receive it via faith.

Hebrews 10:39 (Amplified Bible)

10:39 But our way is not that of those who draw back to eternal misery (perdition) and are utterly destroyed, but we are of those who believe [who cleave to and trust in and rely on God through Jesus Christ, the Messiah] and by faith preserve the soul.

C. CHRIST was hungry

"He was hungry."

Hungry means "to famish" or "to crave" or:

a. metaphorically to crave ardently, to seek with eager desires

Hungry for fruit of Israel.

John 4:34 (Amplified Bible)

4:34 Jesus said to them, My food (nourishment) is to do the will (pleasure) of Him Who sent Me and to accomplish and completely finish His work.

CHRIST was hungry because of the unfruitfulness of the Jewish church of that day. That fig tree was made an example in the eyes of men (the twelve apostles) representing unfruitful Israel at that time.

Luke 13:6-7 (Amplified Bible)

13:6 And He told them this parable: A certain man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he came looking for fruit on it, but did not find [any].

13:7 So he said to the vinedresser, See here! For these three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree and I find none. Cut it down! Why should it continue also to use up the ground [to deplete the soil, intercept the sun, and take up room]? s

IX. CONCLUSION:

CHRIST will come inside of you to remove your misery and He will be looking for your fruits, don't let Him be hungry. Feed CHRIST with your fruits of righteousness not your doing.

Ephesians 5:9 (Amplified Bible)

5:9 For the fruit (the effect, the product) of the Light or the Spirit [consists] in every form of kindly goodness, uprightness of heart, and trueness of life.

Psalms 30:5 (Amplified Bible)

30:5 For His anger is but for a moment, but His favor is for a lifetime or in His favor is life. Weeping may endure for a night, but joy comes in the morning.

2 Corinthians 4:17 (Amplified Bible)

4:17 For our light, momentary affliction (this slight distress of the passing hour) is ever more and more abundantly preparing and producing and achieving for us an everlasting weight of glory [beyond all measure, excessively surpassing all comparisons and all calculations, a vast and transcendent glory and blessedness never to cease!],
