I. EXORDIUM:

Are you a temple of prayer?

II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:

Believers

III. OBJECTIVES:

Mark 11:15 (Amplified Bible)

11:15 And they came to Jerusalem. And He went into the temple [area, the porches and courts] and began to drive out those who sold and bought in the temple area, and He overturned the [four-footed] tables of the money changers and the seats of those who dealt in doves;

V. THESIS:

We are a house of prayer.

Romans 12:12 (New Century Version)

12:12 Be joyful because you have hope. Be patient when trouble comes, and pray at all times.

Ephesians 6:18 (Amplified Bible)

6:18 Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people).

VI. TITLE:

CHRIST came into the temple

Study of Mark 11

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: Mark, son of Mary of Jerusalem; referred to as John Mark

B. Date written: 58 B.C.

C. Purpose: To present JESUS of Nazareth as GOD's Suffering Servant, the Redeemer of the world

D. To whom written: Roman or Gentile Christians

E. Main Theme: CHRIST is the tireless servant of GOD and humanity.

F. Key word: Immediately

G. Key verse: Mark 10:45

Mark 10:45 (Amplified Bible)

10:45 For even the Son of Man came not to have service rendered to Him, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for (instead of) many.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

CHRIST waited for this since He was a little child.

Luke 2:49 (Amplified Bible)

2:49 And He said to them, How is it that you had to look for Me? Did you not see and know that it is necessary [as a duty] for Me to be in My Father’s house and [occupied] about My Father’s business?

CHRIST was prophesied to build the True Temple, that's our body, the Temple of the HOLY SPIRIT, but will not left out the current temple.

Zechariah 6:12 (Amplified Bible)

6:12 And say to him, Thus says the Lord of hosts: [You, Joshua] behold (look at, keep in sight, watch) the Man [the Messiah] whose name is the Branch, for He shall grow up in His place and He shall build the [true] temple of the Lord.

There's one purpose of the Temple, that's it to be a house of prayer at all times.

Romans 1:10 (Amplified Bible)

1:10 I keep pleading that somehow by God’s will I may now at last prosper and come to you.

And as a temple of the HOLY SPIRIT, we are to live a lifestyle of prayer, to practice faith, we need to pray.

Habakkuk 2:1 (Amplified Bible)

2:1 [OH, I know, I have been rash to talk out plainly this way to God!] I will [in my thinking] stand upon my post of observation and station myself on the tower or fortress, and will watch to see what He will say within me and what answer I will make [as His mouthpiece] to the perplexities of my complaint against Him.

Romans 1:17 (Amplified Bible)

1:17 For in the Gospel a righteousness which God ascribes is revealed, both springing from faith and leading to faith [disclosed through the way of faith that arouses to more faith]. As it is written, The man who through faith is just and upright shall live and shall live by faith.

But the one purpose was neglected but instead the Temple was turned into a marketplace.

A. CHRIST drove out those who bought and sold

"and began to drive out those who sold and bought in the temple area,"

Matthew 21:12 (Amplified Bible)

21:12 And Jesus went into the temple (whole temple enclosure) and drove out all who bought and sold in the sacred place, and He turned over the four-footed tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who sold doves.

The temple was a sacred place dedicated for one purpose only, to commune with GOD, the FATHER.

Luke 19:45 (Amplified Bible)

19:45 Then He went into the temple [enclosure] and began to drive out those who were selling,

The WORDS of JESUS was "cave of robbers"

Luke 19:46 (Amplified Bible)

19:46 Telling them, It is written, My house shall be a house of prayer; but you have made it a cave of robbers.

Isaiah 56:7 (Amplified Bible)

56:7 All these I will bring to My holy mountain and make them joyful in My house of prayer. Their burnt offerings and their sacrifices will be accepted on My altar; for My house will be called a house of prayer for all peoples.

Jeremiah 7:11 (Amplified Bible)

7:11 Has this house, which is called by My Name, become a den of robbers in your eyes [a place of retreat for you between acts of violence]? Behold, I Myself have seen it, says the Lord.

B. CHRIST overturned money changer's tables

"and He overturned the [four-footed] tables of the money changers"

It's desecrating the Temple, imagine finding money changer's table in a temple instead of scrolls, tablets and people praying.

Matthew 21:12 (Amplified Bible)

21:12 And Jesus went into the temple (whole temple enclosure) and drove out all who bought and sold in the sacred place, and He turned over the four-footed tables of the money changers and the chairs of those who sold doves.

John 2:14-15 (Amplified Bible)

2:14 There He found in the temple [enclosure] those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting there [also at their stands].

2:15 And having made a lash (a whip) of cords, He drove them all out of the temple [enclosure]—both the sheep and the oxen—spilling and scattering the brokers’ money and upsetting and tossing around their trays (their stands).

C. CHRIST overturned those who sold doves

"and the seats of those who dealt in doves;"

Deuteronomy 14:24-26 (Amplified Bible)

14:24 And if the distance is too long for you to carry your tithe, or the place where the Lord your God chooses to set His Name [and Presence] is too far away for you, when the Lord your God has blessed you,

14:25 Then you shall turn it into money, and bind up the money in your hand, and shall go to the place [of worship] which the Lord your God has chosen.

14:26 And you may spend that money for whatever your appetite craves, for oxen, or sheep, or new wine or strong[er] drink, or whatever you desire; and you shall eat there before the Lord your God and you shall rejoice, you and your household.

It was only commanded that the offerings or sacrifices of animals be kept first as a money, then exchanged for the real sacrifice, if their houses are FAR AWAY from the Temple where the LORD GOD designated it. But it became a business for them, people near and far are offered doves for them to buy.

It was not only doves they are selling..

John 2:14 (Amplified Bible)

2:14 There He found in the temple [enclosure] those who were selling oxen and sheep and doves, and the money changers sitting there [also at their stands].

IX. CONCLUSION:

We are a house of prayer.

Romans 12:12 (New Century Version)

12:12 Be joyful because you have hope. Be patient when trouble comes, and pray at all times.

Ephesians 6:18 (Amplified Bible)

6:18 Pray at all times (on every occasion, in every season) in the Spirit, with all [manner of] prayer and entreaty. To that end keep alert and watch with strong purpose and perseverance, interceding in behalf of all the saints (God’s consecrated people).
