I. EXORDIUM:

II. AUDIENCE PROFILE:

Advanced Believers

III. OBJECTIVES:

To expose the doctrine of armour-bearing and discuss the biblical way of doing it.

IV. TEXT:

Ephesians 6:11 (Amplified Bible)

6:11 Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil.

V. THESIS:

Thank you FATHER GOD, for the whole armour of GOD that I have put on myself, no one bears them for me, I bear them all myself to protect me from spiritual enemies of this world. I put on and wear JESUS CHRIST as the Armour of GOD, so I am protected from the spiritual enemies in this world. The LORD JESUS CHRIST goes before me, around me, and in me as my Armour of GOD.

Ephesians 6:11-13 (Amplified Bible)

6:11 Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil.

6:12 For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.

6:13 Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place].

VIII. MAIN BODY:

Armourbearer, armour-bearer or armor-bearer came from the Hebrew word "naw-saw', naw-saw'" meaning: (Reference: Strong's Hebrew Dictionary)

A primitive root; to lift, in a great variety of applications, literally and figuratively, absolutely and relatively: - accept, advance, arise, (able to, [armour], suffer to) bear (-er, up), bring (forth), burn, carry (away), cast, contain, desire, ease, exact, exalt (self), extol, fetch, forgive, furnish, further, give, go on, help, high, hold up, honourable (+ man), lade, lay, lift (self) up, lofty, marry, magnify, X needs, obtain, pardon, raise (up), receive, regard, respect, set (up), spare, stir up, + swear, take (away, up), X utterly, wear, yield.

So in the Old Testament, we see an armour-bearer can also fetch for his master like a dog.

1 Samuel 20:35-40 (Amplified Bible)

20:35 In the morning Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad was with him.

20:36 And he said to his lad, Run, find the arrows which I shoot. And as the lad ran, he shot an arrow beyond him.

20:37 When the lad came to the place where Jonathan had shot the arrow, Jonathan called to [him], Is not the arrow beyond you?

20:38 And Jonathan cried after the lad, Make speed, haste, stay not! The lad gathered up the arrow and came to his master.

20:39 But the lad knew nothing; only Jonathan and David knew the matter.

20:40 Jonathan gave his weapons to his lad and told him, Go, carry them to the city.

A. In Old Testament/Old covenant, somebody else bear our armours for us

"1 Samuel 14:1 (Amplified Bible)

14:1 ONE DAY Jonathan son of Saul said to his armor-bearer, Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side. But he did not tell his father. "

1. Characteristics of an armour-bearer in the Old Testament:

a. Obeys his master without question

1 Samuel 14:1 (Amplified Bible)

14:1 ONE DAY Jonathan son of Saul said to his armor-bearer, Come, let us go over to the Philistine garrison on the other side. But he did not tell his father.

1 Samuel 14:6 (Amplified Bible)

14:6 And Jonathan said to his young armor-bearer, Come, and let us go over to the garrison of these uncircumcised; it may be that the Lord will work for us. For there is nothing to prevent the Lord from saving by many or by few.

b. Supports with his life all the things in mind of his master

1 Samuel 14:7 (Amplified Bible)

14:7 And his armor-bearer said to him, Do all that is in your mind; I am with you in whatever you think [best].

1 Chronicles 10:4-5 (Amplified Bible)

10:4 Then Saul said to his armor-bearer, Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, lest these uncircumcised come and abuse and make sport of me. But his armor-bearer would not, for he was terrified. So Saul took his own sword and fell on it.

10:5 When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died.

c. David did not wanted to become Saul's armour-bearer, for He know GOD is His Armour. But in the end, David agreed to become Saul's armor bearer.

1 Samuel 17:38-39 (Amplified Bible)

17:38 Then Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail.

17:39 And David girded his sword over his armor. Then he tried to go, but could not, for he was not used to it. And David said to Saul, I cannot go with these, for I am not used to them. And David took them off.

1 Samuel 16:21 (Amplified Bible)

16:21 And David came to Saul and served him. Saul became very fond of him, and he became his armor-bearer.

d. Finishes what his master has started. Can also be a group of armor-bearers

2 Samuel 18:15 (Amplified Bible)

18:15 And ten young men, Joab’s armor-bearers, surrounded and struck Absalom and killed him.

e. They went before their master to protect them

1 Samuel 17:7 (Amplified Bible)

17:7 And the shaft of his spear was like a weaver’s beam; his spear’s head weighed 600 shekels of iron. And a shield bearer went before him.

f. They can and will kill, even killing their own master - example of Abimelech's armour-bearer

Judges 9:54 (Amplified Bible)

9:54 Then he called hastily to the young man, his armor-bearer, and said to him, Draw your sword and slay me, so that men may not say of me, A woman slew him. And his young man thrust him through, and he died.

g. They are like a shadow of their master.

1 Samuel 14:14 (Amplified Bible)

14:14 And that first slaughter which Jonathan and his armor-bearer made was about twenty men within about a half acre of land [which a yoke of oxen might plow].

1 Samuel 14:17 (Amplified Bible)

14:17 Then Saul said to the men with him, Number and see who is gone from us. When they numbered, behold, Jonathan and his armor-bearer were missing.

1 Samuel 31:5-6 (Amplified Bible)

31:5 When his armor-bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell upon his sword and died with him.

31:6 So Saul, his three sons, his armor-bearer, and all his men died that day together.

h. Usually younger than his master

1 Samuel 20:35 (Amplified Bible)

20:35 In the morning Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad was with him.

2. An armor-bearer named in the Old Testament: Zelek the Ammonite

2 Samuel 23:37 (Amplified Bible)

23:37 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai of Beeroth, armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah,

1 Chronicles 11:39 (Amplified Bible)

11:39 Zelek the Ammonite, Naharai the Berothite, the armor-bearer of Joab son of Zeruiah [David’s half sister],

B. In New Testament/New covenant, we put on our own armour

"Put on God’s whole armor [the armor of a heavy-armed soldier which God supplies], that you may be able successfully to stand up against [all] the strategies and the deceits of the devil."

1. Characteristics of an armour-bearer in the New Testament:

a. An armour is trusted by a strong man - JESUS is the Stronger Man, devil is the strong man.

Luke 11:22 (New King James Version)

11:22 But when a stronger than he comes upon him and overcomes him, he takes from him all his armor in which he trusted, and divides his spoils.

b. It is spiritual, an armour of light - armour in the New covenant is a spiritual thing not physical, and we carry them ourselves by putting them on.

Romans 13:12 (Amplified Bible)

13:12 The night is far gone and the day is almost here. Let us then drop (fling away) the works and deeds of darkness and put on the [full] armor of light.

c. It is spiritual, it's the Bible that we all carry ourselves. It is an armour of righteousness.

2 Corinthians 6:7 (New King James Version)

6:7 by the word of truth, by the power of God, by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,

d. It's not our own armour, it belongs to GOD, we bear them for GOD. - JESUS CHRIST is the Armour of GOD.

Ephesians 6:11 (New King James Version)

6:11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.

e. We bear the whole armour of GOD, it's not our armour, it's GOD's armour, we bear them for GOD as His servants.

Ephesians 6:13 (Amplified Bible)

6:13 Therefore put on God’s complete armor, that you may be able to resist and stand your ground on the evil day [of danger], and, having done all [the crisis demands], to stand [firmly in your place].

IX. CONCLUSION:

In the Old Covenant, which is now obsolete, man bears armour for another man. In the New Covenant, we bear GOD's armour, GOD's armour was put on by man. In the Old covenant, it's a physical armour. In the New Covenant, it's all spiritual. Biblical armour bearing is New Covenant's way of armour-bearing.
