16:18 And I tell you, you are Peter [Greek, Petros—a large piece of rock], and on this rock [Greek, petra—a huge rock like Gibraltar] I will build My church, and the gates of Hades (the powers of the infernal region) shall not overpower it [or be strong to its detriment or hold out against it].

16:19 I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind (declare to be improper and unlawful) on earth must be what is already bound in heaven; and whatever you loose (declare lawful) on earth must be what is already loosed in heaven.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

A. Peter

1. At once left their current business and followed JESUS

Matthew 4:18-20 (Amplified Bible)

4:18 As He was walking by the Sea of Galilee, He noticed two brothers, Simon who is called Peter and Andrew his brother, throwing a dragnet into the sea, for they were fishermen.

4:19 And He said to them, Come after Me [as disciples—letting Me be your Guide], follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men!

4:20 At once they left their nets and became His disciples [sided with His party and followed Him].

2. Often perceived as the leader of the disciples, because he is outspoken and always volunteers

Matthew 14:28-29 (Amplified Bible)

14:28 And Peter answered Him, Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.

14:29 He said, Come! So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water, and he came toward Jesus.

Matthew 17:4 (Amplified Bible)

17:4 Then Peter began to speak and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good and delightful that we are here; if You approve, I will put up three booths here—one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

3. Requires explanation of the parables from JESUS

Matthew 15:15 (Amplified Bible)

15:15 But Peter said to Him, Explain this proverb (this maxim) to us.

4. Confesses JESUS as the CHRIST and the SON of the Living GOD

Matthew 16:16 (Amplified Bible)

16:16 Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.

5. Airs what's inside of him even losing his own face to CHRIST

Matthew 16:22-23 (Amplified Bible)

16:22 Then Peter took Him aside to speak to Him privately and began to reprove and charge Him sharply, saying, God forbid, Lord! This must never happen to You!

16:23 But Jesus turned away from Peter and said to him, Get behind Me, Satan! You are in My way [an offense and a hindrance and a snare to Me]; for you are minding what partakes not of the nature and quality of God, but of men.

6. Asked by JESUS to prove a point

Matthew 17:25-26 (Amplified Bible)

17:25 He answered, Yes. And when he came home, Jesus spoke to him [about it] first, saying, What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly rulers collect duties or tribute—from their own sons or from others not of their own family?

17:26 And when Peter said, From other people not of their own family, Jesus said to him, Then the sons are exempt.

7. Denied and disown JESUS three times

Matthew 26:34 (Amplified Bible)

26:34 Jesus said to him, Solemnly I declare to you, this very night, before a single rooster crows, you will deny and disown Me three times.

8. Wept bitterly after he disown CHRIST

Matthew 26:75 (Amplified Bible)

26:75 And Peter remembered Jesus’ words, when He had said, Before a single rooster crows, you will deny and disown Me three times. And he went outside and wept bitterly.

9. Return to his former activity of fishing after sinning against JESUS

John 21:3 (New International Version)

21:3 "I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

10. Watches to learn from JESUS

Matthew 17:4 (Amplified Bible)

17:4 Then Peter began to speak and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good and delightful that we are here; if You approve, I will put up three booths here—one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.

B. Judas

1. Known from the start as the betrayer

Matthew 10:4 (Amplified Bible)

10:4 Simon the Cananaean, and Judas Iscariot, who also betrayed Him.

2. Robs the money from JESUS and the disciples

John 12:4-6 (Amplified Bible)

12:4 But Judas Iscariot, the one of His disciples who was about to betray Him, said,

12:5 Why was this perfume not sold for 300 denarii [a year’s wages for an ordinary workman] and that [money] given to the poor (the destitute)?

12:6 Now he did not say this because he cared for the poor but because he was a thief; and having the bag (the money box, the purse of the Twelve), he took for himself what was put into it [pilfering the collections].

3. Turns his back when JESUS is teaching

Matthew 26:14 (Amplified Bible)

26:14 Then one of the Twelve [apostles], who was called Judas Iscariot, went to the chief priests

4. Confesses JESUS as a teacher

Matthew 26:25 (New Century Version)

26:25 Then Judas, who would give Jesus to his enemies, said to Jesus, “Teacher, surely I am not the one, am I?“ Jesus answered, “Yes, it is you.“

Matthew 26:49 (New Century Version)

26:49 At once Judas went to Jesus and said, “Greetings, Teacher!“ and kissed him.

Mark 14:45 (New Century Version)

14:45 So Judas went straight to Jesus and said, “Teacher!“ and kissed him.

5. Says something when he's hiding something but not in front of our LORD

John 12:5 (New International Version)

12:5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold and the money given to the poor? It was worth a year's wages."

6. Given a bread by JESUS to prove a point

John 13:26 (New International Version)

13:26 Jesus answered, "It is the one to whom I will give this piece of bread when I have dipped it in the dish." Then, dipping the piece of bread, he gave it to Judas Iscariot, son of Simon.

7. Betrayed JESUS for money

Mark 14:10-11 (New International Version)

14:10 Then Judas Iscariot, one of the Twelve, went to the chief priests to betray Jesus to them.

14:11 They were delighted to hear this and promised to give him money. So he watched for an opportunity to hand him over.

8. Repented after he betrayed JESUS and returned back the money

Matthew 27:3-4 (New International Version)

27:3 When Judas, who had betrayed him, saw that Jesus was condemned, he was seized with remorse and returned the thirty silver coins to the chief priests and the elders.

27:4 "I have sinned," he said, "for I have betrayed innocent blood." "What is that to us?" they replied. "That's your responsibility."

9. Repented and hanged himself

Matthew 27:5 (Amplified Bible)

27:5 And casting the pieces of silver [forward] into the [Holy Place of the sanctuary of the] temple, he departed; and he went off and hanged himself.

10. Watches to betray JESUS

Mark 14:11 (Amplified Bible)

14:11 And when they heard it, they rejoiced and were delighted, and they promised to give him money. And he [busying himself continually] sought an opportunity to betray Him.

IX. CONCLUSION:

Whenever we sin against JESUS, and all our sins are always against JESUS, always return to JESUS, He always loves, forgives, restores the same times we sin against him, to our same position before him before we sinned. JESUS will restore us to our same authority, relationship and same reputation as before we have sinned.

John 21:15-17 (Amplified Bible)

21:15 When they had eaten, Jesus said to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, do you love Me more than these [others do—with reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion, as one loves the Father]? He said to Him, Yes, Lord, You know that I love You [that I have deep, instinctive, personal affection for You, as for a close friend]. He said to him, Feed My lambs.

21:16 Again He said to him the second time, Simon, son of John, do you love Me [with reasoning, intentional, spiritual devotion, as one loves the Father]? He said to Him, Yes, Lord, You know that I love You [that I have a deep, instinctive, personal affection for You, as for a close friend]. He said to him, Shepherd (tend) My sheep.

21:17 He said to him the third time, Simon, son of John, do you love Me [with a deep, instinctive, personal affection for Me, as for a close friend]? Peter was grieved (was saddened and hurt) that He should ask him the third time, Do you love Me? And he said to Him, Lord, You know everything; You know that I love You [that I have a deep, instinctive, personal affection for You, as for a close friend]. Jesus said to him, Feed My sheep.
