World History

I. Intro

A. Today we’re going to cover a lot of ground.

1. In fact, we’re going to cover a whole lot of ground.

2. We’re going to cover every major event in world history in 30 minutes, give or take a few minutes.

3. All that’s really essential for us to know, we can find it in this book, the Bible, the Word of God.

B. There are 5 critical events in world history that we must know.

1. Today, we are going to look at those events and see their significance, not only for the whole world, but also for you.

II. Critical Event in World History #1: God created the heavens and the earth (Read Genesis 1:1).

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

A. World history begins with God.

1. This is the most significant statement ever made.

2.“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”

3. This statement includes everything that exists.

4. Everything that exists today, or has ever been created, was created by God.

B. At the beginning, God was already there.

1. Before there was a heavens and an earth, God was already there.

2. God was never created.

3. God existed before there was a creation.

C. God created the universe, the earth, the plants, the animals, and His greatest creation, Man.

1. God created man (Genesis 1:26–27).

2. There is no evolution, there is no crawling out of the slime.

3. Humankind is a direct, divine creation of the Almighty God.

4. God created man for His pleasure.

5. God created man for His glory.

6. God created man for His fellowship.

D. What is the significance of this critical event in world history?

1. It shows us God is the author and director of history.

2. He began history and He is actively involved in the continuation of history.

3. It shows us God alone is in control of the universe and the direction of history.

4. It also shows that humans are not God.

5. We are created beings created by an uncreated God.

6. God is superior to us.

7. As created beings, we are responsible to our Creator.

III. Critical Event in World History #2: Man sinned (Read Genesis 3:11)

11 And he said, Who told thee that thou wast naked? Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?

A. God makes the rules.

1. God gave Adam a command not to do something.

2. God’s rules are not just so he can be in control, God, in His love and concern, sets rules that are best for creation. 3. God knew what was best for Adam and commanded him not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

B. Man broke God’s rules.

1. Adam and Eve thought God was holding out on them.

2. Influenced by the devil, they decided they knew better than God.

3. They denied God’s command and took matters into their own hands.

C. Man sinned.

1. They disobeyed God; they disobeyed their Creator.

2. Sin is rebellion. They rebelled against the rule of God.

3. The actions of Adam and Eve brought sin into the world.

4. It also brought death (v.19)

D. What is the significance of this critical event in world history?

1. Sin came into the world and sin continues to be in the world.

2. Man rebelled against God and that rebellion continues today.

3. Death is still the reality of sin.

E. This didn’t catch God by surprise.

1. God knew man would fall.

2. This didn’t throw God’s eternal plan off track.

3. World history was still in God’s control.

4. He had a plan to overcome the sin brought into the world.

F. We all still live under the curse of sin.

1.“All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

2. We all still have to pay the penalty for sin. 3.“The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23).

IV. Critical Event in World History #3: Jesus came (Read 1 Corinthians 15:3–4)

3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the

scriptures; 4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

A. But before God created the heavens and the earth, God already had a plan to conquer sin.

1.“He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.” (1 Peter 1:20–21)

B. God’s plan was Jesus Christ.

1. Jesus came – God Himself – and gave Himself on the cross for our sins.

2. God had a plan to reconcile His holiness and His love. 3. God is holy and sin cannot exist in His presence.

4. God is love and doesn’t want any to perish.

5. His plan was that a sinless Jesus would be the sacrifice for man’s sins.

6. Forgiveness of sin is not the final element of God’s plan. 7. His plan is also that man might live eternally with Him. 8. His resurrection means we’ll also be resurrected.

C. What is the significance of this critical event in world history?

1. God made a way for man to come out from under the curse of sin.

2. God gave Himself to overcome the sins of man.

3. Jesus Christ provides a way for man to receive forgiveness and be reconciled to their Creator.

V. Critical Event in World History #4: Jesus will return (1 Thessalonians 4:16–17)

16 For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: 17 Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord

A. The Bible not only records past world events.

1. It also gives us a peek into future world events.

B. One day, the Lord Jesus Christ will return.

1. One day He will descend from heaven.

2. One day an angel of the Lord will give a great victory shout.

3. The trumpet of God will sound around the entire world.

C. Jesus will take those who are His home.

1. All those who died trusting Him will be resurrected and join Jesus in the air.

2. All those Christians alive at that moment will join them and Jesus in the air.

3. Every one of them will live in the presence and glory of God forever and ever.

D. Those who are not His will be left out.

1. They will not join in with those who are with Jesus Christ.

2.“And if anyone’s name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire.” (Rev. 20:15)

3. Those who have not accepted Jesus Christ will dwell forever in a physical place called Hell.

E. What is the significance of this critical event in world history?

1. World history has a definite end.

2. History, as we know it, will cease at some point in the future.

3. Those who trust in Jesus Christ will live forever in a place with God called Heaven.

4. Those who don’t trust in Jesus Christ will Live forever in a place without God called Hell.

VI. Critical Event in World History #5: Today.

A. Today is the most crucial day ever for you.

1. You are a created human being.

2. You were created by the Great God Almighty.

3. As a created being, you answer to your Creator, God.

4. As a human being, you live under the curse of sin.

5. The wages of your sin is still death.

B. But Jesus came for you.

1. Jesus went to that cross for you.

2. He died that horrible death so that you might be free from the chains of sin.

3. He provides a way – the only way – for you to be forgiven and reconciled to a Holy God.

C. And one day Jesus is coming back again.

1. He’s coming to take all those who trust in Him home to heaven.

2. The rest will be condemned forever in hell.

D. What is the significance of this critical event in world history?

1. The decision you make today will alter your history forever.

2. You can trust in Jesus Christ and be forgiven by God and reconciled to God.

3. Your decision can change your eternal destiny from hell to heaven.”
