1:9 Have not I commanded you? Be strong, vigorous, and very courageous. Be not afraid, neither be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.

1:10 Then Joshua commanded the officers of the people, saying,

1:11 Pass through the camp and command the people, Prepare your provisions, for within three days you shall pass over this Jordan to go in to take possession of the land which the Lord your God is giving you to possess.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

Background of Rahab

Rahab or "rachab" in Hebrew which means: proud. Rahab is a harlot in the city of Jericho. She never lived out her name, because she's never proud but all around her after they heard what the LORD has done to the enemies of the Israelites, still is proud and will not surrender to Israel.

What Rahab had done?

1. She took and hidden the two spies Joshua had sent.

Joshua 2:4 (Amplified Bible)

2:4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she said, Yes, two men came to me, but I did not know from where they had come.

Joshua 2:6 (Amplified Bible)

2:6 But she had brought them up to the roof and hidden them under the stalks of flax which she had laid in order there.

2. She lied about the two spies.

Joshua 2:4 (Amplified Bible)

2:4 But the woman had taken the two men and hidden them. So she said, Yes, two men came to me, but I did not know from where they had come.

3. She talked to the two spies heart to heart. It became the greatest declarations a harlot can say to the Jews.

Joshua 2:8 (Amplified Bible)

2:8 Before the two men had lain down, Rahab came up to them on the roof,

Rahab is the last and unexpected person to have faith and receive Grace from GOD. Why?

1. She's a woman. - In the Old Testament, woman is not given importance.

2. She's a prostitute.

3. She's not an Israelite.

Rahab is included in the hall of faith. She's an illustration of faith and works.

Hebrews 11:31 (Amplified Bible)

11:31 [Prompted] by faith Rahab the prostitute was not destroyed along with those who refused to believe and obey, because she had received the spies in peace [without enmity].

Joshua 6:22-25 (Amplified Bible)

6:22 But Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, Go into the harlot’s house and bring out the woman and all she has, as you swore to her.

6:23 So the young men, the spies, went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brethren, and all that she had; and they brought out all her kindred and set them outside the camp of Israel.

6:24 And they burned the city with fire and all that was in it; only the silver, the gold, and the vessels of bronze and of iron they put into the treasury of the house of the Lord.

6:25 So Joshua saved Rahab the harlot, with her father’s household and all that she had; and she lives in Israel even to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

James 2:25 (Amplified Bible)

2:25 So also with Rahab the harlot—was she not shown to be justified (pronounced righteous before God) by [good] deeds when she took in the scouts (spies) and sent them away by a different route?

Later on Rahab was married to Salmon, and she became the mother of Boaz. That's how GOD honored Rahab among the Israelites, technically speaking, on the LORD JESUS CHRIST's human side, she's the grandmother of JESUS in the flesh.

Matthew 1:5 (Amplified Bible)

1:5 Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab, Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, Obed the father of Jesse,

Declarations of Rahab (Joshua 2:9-13)

Joshua 2:9-13 (Amplified Bible)

2:9 And she said to the men, I know that the Lord has given you the land and that your terror is fallen upon us and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

2:10 For we have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to the two kings of the Amorites who were on the [east] side of the Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom you utterly destroyed.

2:11 When we heard it, our hearts melted, neither did spirit or courage remain any more in any man because of you, for the Lord your God, He is God in heaven above and on earth beneath.

2:12 Now then, I pray you, swear to me by the Lord, since I have shown you kindness, that you also will show kindness to my father’s house, and give me a sure sign,

2:13 And save alive my father and mother, my brothers and sisters, and all they have, and deliver us from death.

1. The LORD has given Israel this land.

2. The LORD dried up the red sea

3. The LORD destroyed Sihon and Og

4. The LORD rules heaven and earth

5. The LORD's name will be kind to me

6. The LORD's name is kind to my family

She's turned into a different woman by her declarations and faith in them. She received GOD's grace, though she's not deserving, yet she pleased GOD by her faith. Rahab's declaration was all GOD's WORD for the Israelites but she believed it all, declared it over her life and believed every word of it.

Joshua 1:8 (Amplified Bible)

1:8 This Book of the Law shall not depart out of your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, that you may observe and do according to all that is written in it. For then you shall make your way prosperous, and then you shall deal wisely and have good success.

A. Life of the spies for Rahab

"And the men said to her, Our lives for yours! If you do not tell this business of ours,"

1 Kings 20:39 (Amplified Bible)

20:39 And as the king passed by, the [prophet] cried out to him, Your servant went out into the midst of the battle, and behold, a man turned aside and brought a man to me and said, Keep this man. If for any reason he is missing, then your life shall be required for his life, or else you shall pay a talent of silver.

The two spies understood that by faith Rahab accepted them as men of GOD, so as a response to her faith, they redeemed her. Their life in exchanged for Rahab's life. This is like JESUS CHRIST giving His life as a ransom to many. The two spies became type of the Messiah.

Matthew 20:28 (Amplified Bible)

20:28 Just as the Son of Man came not to be waited on but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many [the price paid to set them free].

2 Peter 1:3 (Amplified Bible)

1:3 For His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue).

2 Corinthians 5:21 (Amplified Bible)

5:21 For our sake He made Christ [virtually] to be sin Who knew no sin, so that in and through Him we might become [endued with, viewed as being in, and examples of] the righteousness of God [what we ought to be, approved and acceptable and in right relationship with Him, by His goodness].

B. When the LORD gives the land, Israelites will deal kindly and faithfully with Rahab

"then when the Lord gives us the land we will deal kindly and faithfully with you"

It happened just as Rahab said it by faith.

Joshua 6:17 (Amplified Bible)

6:17 And the city and all that is in it shall be devoted to the Lord [for destruction]; only Rahab the harlot and all who are with her in her house shall live, because she hid the messengers whom we sent.

Joshua 6:25 (Amplified Bible)

6:25 So Joshua saved Rahab the harlot, with her father’s household and all that she had; and she lives in Israel even to this day, because she hid the messengers whom Joshua sent to spy out Jericho.

1 Samuel 20:8 (Amplified Bible)

20:8 Therefore deal kindly with your servant, for you have brought [me] into a covenant of the Lord with you. But if there is guilt in me, kill me yourself; for why should you bring me to your father?

IX. CONCLUSION:

Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for the faith You've given me pleased GOD because it's Your faith and everything You've done in full obedience and faithfulness to GOD within me and on my behalf kept me victorious in the world.
