GOD is Spirit.
GOD or "theos" in Greek which means:
1. the Supreme Divinity

But the word is more particularly applied to subordinate officers, as governors, intendants, prefects, mayors, justices of the peace, and the like.

True worship is accompanied by lips/mouth and heart:

1. Sacrifice - we are the living sacrifice

2. Fear of the LORD
Fear or "phobeo" in Greek which means: to frighten, to be alarmed, to be in awe, to revere, afraid.
Do not fear man, thus the LORD is saying do not worship any man who can only kill the body but not the soul.

10:28 And do not be afraid of those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; but rather be afraid of Him who can destroy both soul and body in hell (Gehenna).
Example: GOD does not want us to worship(fear) our enemies but worship (fear) the LORD who goes with us:

IX. CONCLUSION:
We worship GOD in Spirit and Truth. The LORD JESUS CHRIST is both Spirit and Truth. Therefore we worship GOD in JESUS. We don't need physical representation of GOD or what is called an idol for that will be a lie.
JESUS CHRIST deserves all worship intended for GOD.
We can only truly and correctly worship GOD in and through JESUS CHRIST. Only a born again CHRISTian believer can really truly and correctly worship GOD, because it was not said "..worship Him in soul and truth, but, "in Spirit and in Truth"
