Introduction: After the fall of man in Genesis 3, we find man continuing in sin. By Chapter 4 of Genesis we find the first murder recorded for us. By the time we come to the time of Noah, man’s sin increased but man had progressed a great deal in science and technology.

1. God enables man to progress.

Progress of Man:

a. Cities were built.

Genesis 4:17 Cain was then building a city.

b. Musical instruments were made.

Genesis 4:21 Jubal was the father of all who play the harp and flute.

b. Tools were made of bronze and iron.

Genesis 4:22…who forged all kinds of tools out of bronze and iron. The early civilization – The Neolithic Era, the Bronze Age, and Iron Age.

With the progress and development grew the wickedness of man.

2. Sin in a developed world.

a. Moral degradation.

i. Polygamy. Genesis 4:19.

ii. Abuse of marriage. Genesis 6:1-2

b. Corrupt leaders.

Genesis 6:4

c. Wickedness & violence.

Genesis 6:5 The Lord saw how great man’s wickedness on the earth had become, and that every inclination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil all the time.

Genesis 6:11 Now the earth was corrupt in God’s sight and was full of violence.

d. Alcoholism.

Matthew 24:37 Jesus said about drunkards in Noah’s time.

3. Consequence of man’s sin:

a. God was grieved.

Genesis 6:7 The Lord was grieved that he had made man on the earth, and his heart was filled with pain.

b. God cut short short man’s lifespan.

Genesis 6:3 Then the Lord said, “My Spirit will not contend with man forever, for he is mortal, his days will be a hundred and twenty years

c. God destroys the wicked but spares the righteous.

Genesis 6:13 So God said to Noah, “I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.

In the whole earth God only found Noah faithful. Genesis 6:8-9 8But Noah found favour in the eyes of the Lord. 9This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.

Genesis 6:18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark-you and your sons and your wife and your sons’ wives with you.

Jesus drew parallel from the time of Noah and told that such will be condition of man before the coming of the Lord. Matthew 24:37 As it was in the days of Noah, so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man.

God asked Noah to make an ark of cypress wood and makes rooms in it. Noah did everything the Lord commanded him.

Genesis 7:13-14 13On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark. 14They had with them every wild animal according to its kind, all livestock according to their kinds, every creature that moves along the ground according to its kind and every bird according to its kind, everything with wings.

Genesis 7:11-12 11…on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

Genesis 7:24 The waters flooded the earth for a 150 day.

Genesis 8:14-17 14By the twenty-seventh day of the second month the earth was completely dry. 15Then God said to Noah, 16“Come out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and their wives. 17Bring out every kind of living creature that is with you—the birds, the animals, and all the creatures that move along the ground—so they can multiply on the earth and be fruitful and increase in number on it.”

When Noah stepped off the ark after the flood, it was a fresh new world. Noah and his family set out to obey the Lord in this world and follow God’s commands in replenishing this earth.

Open your Bible to Genesis 9. God is speaking to Noah after the flood. Genesis 9:3 Everything that lives and moves about will be food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything. So it is alright for man to eat the flesh of animals, birds, and fish. Everything was available for man to eat. Man should use his wisdom in choosing things to eat. In our knowledge of science today we know that there are certain kinds of flesh which tend to add to your LDL levels, that is bad cholesterol. As a matter of fact almost everything that is worth eating adds to your LDL.

Genesis 9:4 But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in it. God tells Noah and his family, you may have a lot of things on this earth to eat now, but you should not eat blood.

4. Do not eat blood in any form.

There are certain civilizations and some people group, who drink and eat blood in various forms; however, believers of God ought not to do that. The blood is important. Deuteronomy 12:23 But you should not eat the blood, because the blood is the life, and you must not eat the life with the meat. Science tells that it is the blood that carries the things which give life to the flesh.

God told, animals maybe killed and the flesh maybe eaten, but you cannot eat the flesh with the life thereof. God was making a point because he knew the condition of man’s heart was wicked than he can even imagine himself to be. The discovery program “Man versus wild” shows such savagery where the flesh is just torn from a living creature to basically eat it alive just as the animals do which prey upon one another.

God is not saying you cannot hunt them. He is not saying you cannot kill them, treat it properly and eat the flesh. Do not treat the animal with that kind of savagery.

5. Man’s life is of utmost value to God.

Genesis 9:5-6 5And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand an accounting for the life of another human being. 6“Whoever sheds human blood, by humans shall their blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made mankind.

Now God tells that man’s blood is important. The value of man’s life is so great that if an animal kills a man, I am going to require it of that animal, that animal should be destroyed. God goes on to say that if a man kills another man, then I am going to require the blood of the one who committed that act of murder. This reminds of Cain and Able that God required his brother’s blood.

Man’s life is of absolute value to God. Dear friend do you think that nobody cares, God cares for you. Your life no matter the condition in which you find yourself is of absolute, utmost value to almighty God. He cares for you. He sees you in your hurt. He sees you in your condition. He loves you so much.

6. Wine is mocker.

Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker and beer a brawler; whoever (anyone who is deceived thereby) is led astray by them is not wise. Did you catch the tone of that Bible verse? Mockery, deception.

Follow with me please Genesis 9:20-25 20Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded to plant a vineyard (I think many years before the flood Noah was a carpenter for Noah built the ark. Now that the world has been reestablished, Noah begins to farm and he planted a vineyard). 21When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father naked and told his two brothers outside. 23But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father’s naked body. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father naked.

Noah had the grape juice from the vineyard. This grape juice had fermented and turned into an alcoholic beverage. Now some say probably Noah did not expect to be drunk. He had lived before the flood when the climate was totally different. Perhaps, grape juice did not decompose or ferment then probably as it did afterward and that is probably possible. We are not told about it exactly. I am on the other hand reminded of the words of the Lord Jesus Christ regarding his second coming and compared that day to Noah when men were eating and drinking. So it may lead one to think that perhaps man in his wicked ways have figured our ways even in that good climate to cause wine, the grape juice to turn into an alcoholic beverage.

In any case, I would like to tell you this: Noah was a good man. Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Noah did not intend to get drunk. I would guess that Noah was shocked by what he had let himself in. But therein lies a point: Wine is a mocker. Here is a good man. Whether it was because of the ignorance of the effects of climate change or whether it was because of carelessness, here is a good man and wine, an alcoholic beverage made a mockery of Noah.

When you look at the advertisements for the alcoholic beverage on the TV or billboard, they are always presented as something beautiful, something social, something which is good to do but the Bible declares with authority and it is illustrated in this passage, wine is a mocker.

If you have never taken the first drink, don’t do so. You will never be on skid row because of alcoholism if you never take the first drink. You can save lakhs of rupees and peace if you never take the first drink. My dear friend let me caution you with a heart of compassion, wine is a mocker before it is over it will destroy you.

7. Modesty is a great Biblical virtue.

Modesty is a virtue to be practised even in the home.

Well we do not know the exact details but the story goes something like this. Noah’s grandson Cannan apparently went into Noah’s lodging. Whether he went in accidentally and stumbled upon the scene or whether he was snooping around where he should not have been, we do not know. Apparently Cannan, left the room and went out and told his father, Ham. While it is not recorded for us the context makes it clear. Ham goes in and looks deliberately upon his naked father in his drunkenness and Ham comes out and he tells his two brothers. It appears that Ham was making fun of his father. He was showing disrespect. He did not take action to cover up his father’s nakedness. He told his brothers. His two brothers, Shem and Japheth took a garment, probably one of their own and they held it up between, they held it up shoulder height and then they backed into the room where Noah was and dropped that garment over Noah without ever looking upon him themselves. They showed proper respect for their father.

Noah comes out of his drunkenness and probably recognizes that one of his son’s garments is on him and wonders what has happened. He that he had been lying there unclothed and Noah begins to enquire and discovers what happens. Noah announces a curse. Dear friend, out of this sad, sad account of this event which happened to this good man we learn a lesson. Modesty is a virtue to be practiced even in the home.

Today in the world in which we live, people practice immodestly wholesale. In the malls, out on the streets, in cinemas, even in the church of God, it ought not to be. Immodesty is presented as a shame. It was a shame in the Garden of Eden when Adam and eve first realized that they did not have clothes. If you know the Lord Jesus Christ as your savoiur, you ought to practice modestly. I did not say you are to look frumpy. I did not say that you could not be stylish but you can be modest in your dress.

Parents a word to you as you are bringing your children in the home, you are to train them up in the matter of modesty. You should be modest in your own dress in front of your children. You should see that your children are modest in front of each other.

8. We blessed through the descendants of Shem.

The Shemites are knows as the Jews today. Genesis 9:26-27 26He also said, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of Shem! May Canaan be the slave of Shem. 27May God extend Japheth’s territory; may Japheth live in the tents of Shem, and may Canaan be the slave of Japheth.”

As these sons of Noah went out with their descendants to repopulate the earth, you will discover that the descendants of Shem settled in the region where the land of Israel is today. The descendants of Japeth are settled in Europe and Asia in a general sense. The descendants of Ham travelled and settled as years went by along the northern cost of Africa along the Mediterranean Sea. The descendants of Japheth, that is those who are known in the large sense the gentiles. I am a gentile, not a Jew. God makes it clear in his word that the other peoples in this world, that the gentiles will be blessed through the descendants of Shem, the Jews.

I do not think God was speaking so much of physical blessings, I think that is a part of it. You discover in history and even today, that many of the great blessings in the world in science and arts and business and other ways have come from the Jews and the abilities God has given them. But oh dear friend of mine, whatever you ancestry, you and I dwell in the tents of Shem because it was through Shem that our Lord Jesus Christ came. He came from Shem, from Eber, from Abraham, and on down when Jesus was born he was born into this world as a descendent of Shem and the Lord Jesus Christ is the only savior of the world. Truly, we have been blessed through the descendants, particularly the seed, Lord Jesus Christ of Shem. If you do not know him today, you are missing the blessings today. I invite you to ask him to be your savoir.
