Gen.25:19 -33 -- Gen.27:

Today we'll continue our study of Hebrews 11: - the "hall of the faith" chapter, listen as I read our text verse, it's to do with the faith of Isaac.

Hebrews 11: 20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

~ What we're told here is that Isaac pronounced a blessing on both sons to do with things to come. --- This was done by faith in God Who had revealed these things to him; Isaac believed fully that God would accomplish all that was here prophesied.

In this verse, Isaac's act of faith was total belief that what-ever God says is true. --- When we realize that there were no human probabilities at the time when these prophetic announcements were made, "which could have been the basis of his calculation," but all that Isaac prophesied must have rested altogether on the belief that God had revealed it to him.

A blessing was pronounced on each son, of a very different nature, but Isaac had no doubt that both would be fulfilled, this blessing was prophetic; it was concerning things to come.

 -------

~ As we get a little further into this study to do with Isaac blessing his two sons, we'll read that there was much deceitfulness involved in the way that Jacob come about receiving the " patriarchal blessing" from Isaac.

Remember Isaac was almost blind when this takes place in Gen. 27; he was deceived by his wife Rebecca and Jacob.

Isaac thought he was blessing Esau when he blessed Jacob, he didn't intentionally give Jacob the PATRIACHAL blessing, though it was the will of God that he should.

~ Many people today might feel like Esau got a bad deal, that he should have received the Patriarchal blessing that was rightfully his.

Let us never forget that God knows all things, from beginning to end, the lineage of Jesus the Savior of the world was what was at stake here, God knew Esau didn't care for spiritual things, that he was and always would be a carnal minded person, so God, as always was the DIRECTOR.

~~ 1 Samuel 16:7-- for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

  ------------------------------

Jacob and Esau were twins, not identical twins; they were two different people in every way. -- Esau was born first, and according to their custom in those days, Esau being the first born was to receive the blessing of the 1st born, which included -- the patriarchal blessing.

The "patriarchal blessing" included three things, First, there was the right to the family progenitor-ship, that is, the right to be the one through whom the line of descent to the Messiah would run; --- second, he had a right to the position of priest in the family; --- and thirdly, he had a right to a double portion of the family property.

-------------

God, however, had decreed that "the elder should serve the younger" (Gen 25:23).

@@@ Gen.25:19 -33 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham’s son: Abraham begat Isaac: 20And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah to wife, the daughter of Bethuel the Syrian of Padanaram, the sister to Laban the Syrian.

21And Isaac intreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren: and the LORD was intreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

Isaac prayed to the Lord that He would allow Rebecca to have a child, and the Lord answered his prayer.

  --------

22And the children struggled together within her; and she said, If it be so, why am I thus? And she went to enquire of the LORD.

Rebecca knew she was going to have twins, because she could feel them struggling with each other, which was only the beginning of the fighting that was to come from their dissidence, these would always be against each other, as we can plainly see today.

 --------

23And the LORD said unto her, Two nations are in thy womb, and two manner of people shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

--- God says here, "the elder- Esau" shall serve "the younger- Jacob"

 --------

This was predestination founded upon the foreknowledge of God.

God knew Esau and Jacob as they were formed in the womb, with Gods perfect foreknowledge, He knew that Jacob would start out as a devious person, but that in later years would turn to God. --

~ God would change Jacobs name to "ISRAEL" in Gen.32:28 -- we see that again in Gen. 35:10. -- "ISRAEL" means, “prince with God”

 -----

God chose Jacob to continue the patriarchal line that would become the nation of Israel. -- And God saw Esau demonstrating that his birthright was no more valuable to him than a pot of stew.

~ The Bible calls Jacob a patriarch and shows Esau to be a profane person.

Hebrews 12:16 Lest there be any fornicator, or profane person, as Esau, who for one morsel of meat sold his birthright.

  ----------------

Gen.25:24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb.

25And the first came out red, all over like an hairy garment; and they called his name Esau.

“Esau,” meaning “the hairy one,” and evidently he had red hair.

The description of their delivery from the womb foreshadows the struggles to come between the Israelites and Edomites.

The Edomites were dissidence of Esau, so from Esau came Herod an Edomite. --- From Jacob's 4th son Judah came the Lord Jesus Christ.

  --------

26And after that came his brother out, (Jacob) and his hand took hold on Esau’s heel; and his name was called Jacob: and Isaac was threescore years old when she bare them. --- He was 60.

“Jacob” means “he grasps the heel” or “supplants” which means, to displace and take the place of.

  --------

27And the boys grew: and Esau was a cunning hunter, (he knew how to hunt, there's more to hunting than just going into the woods) a man of the field; and Jacob was a plain man, dwelling in tents. --- Jacob was Mammas boy.

Esau was a cunning hunter, he loved the outdoors, but he had no understanding or desire for spiritual things, he was only interested in that which was physical. He represents the flesh.

  -------

28And Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison: but Rebekah loved Jacob.

The tendency of Isaac to favor Esau and the preferential feelings of Rebecca for Jacob laid the foundation for much sorrow. -- Parents should never have or show partiality among their children.

29And Jacob sod pottage: (soup-stew) and Esau came from the field, and he was faint: 30And Esau said to Jacob, Feed me, I pray thee, with that same red pottage; for I am faint: therefore was his name called Edom. --Red--

31And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright. --- 32And Esau said, Behold, I am at the point to die: and what profit shall this birthright do to me?

~ Esau was not at the point of dying, he was just making small talk, this shows his true feelings to do with spiritual things, but God already knew that.

 ----

33And Jacob said, Swear to me this day; and he sware unto him: and he sold his birthright unto Jacob.

34Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; (soup or stew) and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.

The seeds of lentils grew in pods similar to what we know as field peas. -- Lentils could also be used as an ingredient for bread (Ezek. 4:9).

I have seen lentils in the grocery store, Lord willing I want to get a pack or can just to see what they taste like.

  ------------

@@@ Gen.27: -- here we'll see the blessing of Isaac on both sons'.

Jacob didn't obtain the blessing because of his deceit, but in spite of it. ---That which was promised back in chapter 25: 23 -the Elder shall serve the younger -- would have happened in some good way; but Jacob and his mother Rebecca, seem to distrust God’s promise, and sought the promised blessing in a wrong way, and received with it trouble and sorrow.

Gen. 27:

1And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his eldest son, and said unto him, My son: and he said unto him, Behold, here am I.

Isaac was 137 at this time, but he lived for another 43 years we're told in 35:28 -- all his days were 180 years.

  -------

2And he said, Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death: 3Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me some venison; 4And make me savoury meat, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.

5And Rebekah heard when Isaac spake to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it.

~ Esau in many ways was more honest and dependable than his scheming brother Jacob. -- But he sinned greatly by treating his birthright so casually and selling it for a meal.

6And Rebekah spake unto Jacob her son, saying, Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying, 7Bring me venison, and make me savoury meat, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death.

8Now therefore, my son, obey my voice according to that which I command thee.

9Go now to the flock, and fetch me from thence two good kids of the goats; (calves of goats) and I will make them savoury meat for thy father, such as he loveth: 10And thou shalt bring it to thy father, that he may eat, and that he may bless thee before his death. ~~ savoury - pleasing to the sense of taste ~

11And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother, Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man:

12My father peradventure (supposing-perhaps ) will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a deceiver; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.

13And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.

14And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother: and his mother made savoury meat, such as his father loved.

15And Rebekah took goodly raiment of her eldest son Esau, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son:

16And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck:

17And she gave the savoury meat and the bread, which she had prepared, into the hand of her son Jacob.

18And he came unto his father, and said, My father: and he said, Here am I; who art thou, my son?

19And Jacob said unto his father, I am Esau thy firstborn; I have done according as thou badest me: arise, I pray thee, sit and eat of my venison, that thy soul may bless me.

20And Isaac said unto his son, How is it that thou hast found it so quickly, my son? And he said, Because the LORD thy God brought it to me.

Now the lying Jacob has brought the LORD in on it, the LORD had nothing to do with this deception. -- I would be afraid to utter such words.

  -------

21And Isaac said unto Jacob, Come near, I pray thee, that I may feel thee, my son, whether thou be my very son Esau or not. 22And Jacob went near unto Isaac his father; and he felt him, and said, The voice is Jacob’s voice, but the hands are the hands of Esau.

~ Isaac allowed his senses of touch (vs. 22), taste (vs. 25), and smell (vs. 27) to overrule what he heard.

  ---------

23And he discerned him not, because his hands were hairy, as his brother Esau’s hands: so he blessed him. 24And he said, Art thou my very son Esau? And he said, I am.

25And he said, Bring it near to me, and I will eat of my son’s venison, that my soul may bless thee. And he brought it near to him, and he did eat: and he brought him wine, and he drank.

26And his father Isaac said unto him, Come near now, and kiss me, my son. 27And he came near, and kissed him: and he smelled the smell of his raiment, and blessed him, and said, See, the smell of my son is as the smell of a field which the LORD hath blessed:

THE BLESSING:

28Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine: 29Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother’s sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

30And it came to pass, as soon as Isaac had made an end of blessing Jacob, and Jacob was yet scarce gone out from the presence of Isaac his father, that Esau his brother came in from his hunting.

31And he also had made savoury meat, and brought it unto his father, and said unto his father, Let my father arise, and eat of his son’s venison, that thy soul may bless me.

32And Isaac his father said unto him, Who art thou? And he said, I am thy son, thy firstborn Esau.

33And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where is he that hath taken venison, and brought it me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, and he shall be blessed.

34And when Esau heard the words of his father, he cried with a great and exceeding bitter cry, and said unto his father, Bless me, even me also, O my father.

35And he said, Thy brother came with subtilty, and hath taken away thy blessing.

36And he said, (Esau) Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?

37And Isaac answered and said unto Esau, Behold, I have made him thy lord, and all his brethren have I given to him for servants; and with corn and wine have I sustained him: and what shall I do now unto thee, my son?

38And Esau said unto his father, Hast thou but one blessing, my father? bless me, even me also, O my father. And Esau lifted up his voice, and wept.

39And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above; 40And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.

Esau’s descendants (the Edomites) would occupy a territory less fertile than Jacob’s --- but from time to time they would break loose and assert their independence. (II Chr 21:8–10) -- The Edomites were enemies of Israel.

 -----------

41And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.

42And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.

43Now therefore, my son, obey my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran; 44And tarry with him a few days, until thy brother’s fury turn away; 45Until thy brother’s anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him: then I will send, and fetch thee from thence: why should I be deprived also of you both in one day?

 ------

46And Rebekah said to Isaac, I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth: if Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these which are of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?

 ==============

Chapter 28:

1And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan.

2Arise, go to Padanaram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother’s father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother’s brother.

3And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou mayest be a multitude of people; 4And give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou mayest inherit the land wherein thou art a stranger, which God gave unto Abraham.

5And Isaac sent away Jacob: and he went to Padanaram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Syrian, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob’s and Esau’s mother.

  6When Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob, and sent him away to Padanaram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying, Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan;

  7And that Jacob obeyed his father and his mother, and was gone to Padanaram;

  8And Esau seeing that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father;

9Then went Esau unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives which he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebajoth, to be his wife.

~ Esau would have 6 wives, all Canaanites, his descendants through these 6 wives became known as the Edomites.
