Summary: Moses, a man who ranked almost as high as Abraham in the Hebrew hall of fame

#14 ~ Moses -pt.1 SS Heb.11:23-27 9-7-14

@@ Genesis 15: --

Today we'll continue in our study of Hebrews 11: - often referred to as "the hall of faith chapter" - also called "the catalog of the faithful" chapter.

Verses 23-28 are to do with Moses, a man who ranked almost as high as Abraham in the Hebrew hall of fame.

  It begins by telling about the faith of Moses parents, Amram and Jochebed.

------------

 ~ But before we get under-way I want to lay a little foundation in order for us to see and understand how all these truths to do with Moses come about.

  ~ Moses was of the tribe of Levi, Moses older brother Aaron of 3 years, was the 1st high priest of Israel, they had an older sister Miriam. -- She was seven years older than Moses. -- Miriam was the oldest.

  -- Most sources say she was seven years older than Moses.

 ~She was also a prophetess. -- I have heard people say that there were no women prophetess, but that's not the case.

 ~ Six women in scripture are expressly stated as possessing the title of prophetess. ~ Five in the O.T. -- and one in the gospel of Luke named Anna.

 >Luke 2:36 And there was one Anna, a prophetess, the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Aser:

Old Testament was; Miriam - Deborah - Huldah - Noadiah & Isaiah's wife.

Isaiah's wife is not named.

Noadiah - gained a bad reputation (Neh. 6:14).

New Testament: - Anna and The Daughters of Phillip.

 ~ Philip is mentioned in Acts as having four daughters who prophesied which brings the number of prophetesses to ten.

----------

~ Moses fore- fathers goes as such, Abraham - Isaac-- Jacob-- Levi, the 3rd. son of Jacob and Leah, all the priest are of the tribe of Levi. -- Jesus was of the tribe of Judah, the 4th son of Jacob and Leah.

  ~ I want to lay a little foundation as we begin talking about Moses, in order that we may have a better understanding to do with him. -- Let me point out that there was about 245 years between the death of Abraham and the birth of Moses.

We'll begin by reading the account of God speaking to Abram.

@@@ Genesis 15:12-14 And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

~ This was not a common sleep such as weariness or carelessness, God was in this sleep, much like that which God caused to fall upon Adam when He took the rib from Adam and made Eve. -- Gen. 2:21-- God formed Adam from the dust of the earth Gen.2:7 - He made Eve from a rib from Adam.

--------

Remember, this was while Abram was in this deep God sent sleep:

   13And HE said unto Abram, Know of a surety (a solemn promise) that thy seed (the Jews) shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; (the Egyptians) and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

  ----------

Notice; the Jews would be afflicted BY THE EGYPTIANS 400 years.

 This persecution began with mocking, from Ishmael, the son of Hagar an Egyptian. (Ishmael was after the flesh- Abraham had relations with Hagar as Sarah told him to do so, Sarah thought she would have a son by Abraham and Hagar, she didn't think that she her self would ever have a son, so Ishmael is referred to as "of the flesh" this was not God's plan.)

 ~ Ishmael persecuted Isaac, who was born after the Spirit. -- Gods plan.

  >Gen. 21:9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. -- Here the persecution begins.

  >Gal. 4:29 But as then he that was born after the flesh (Ishmael) persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, (Isaac) even so it is now.

 ~It's still going on today, but when the dust finally settles --

 >Psalm 49:14 -- the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning;

 It's only a matter time, Gods great plan is right on schedule.

 ----------

Listen, what would be the particulars of Israel's sufferings?

They shall be strangers; they were first in Canaan -

>Ps. 105:11-12 Saying, Unto thee will I give the land of Canaan, the lot of your inheritance: -- 12When they were but a few men in number; yea, very few, and strangers in it. -- Notice the Jews has earthly promises. - The Church, heavenly.

----------

~ So they were first in Canaan, and afterwards in Egypt; notice, before they were lords of their own land they were strangers in a strange land.

~ It's much like we that are saved today, we're right now the heirs of heaven, so we are first strangers on earth, a land that is not ours, we're pilgrims on a journey, we're here only for a brief time, but one day we're going home.

 > Romans 8:17 -18 And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together. 18For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

  ~ I don't think the "suffering" here in verse 18 is necessarily talking about suffering in some sort of pain, but more like hardships that might come our way for living for Jesus. -- None of the evil temptations of this world, that we might be confronted with can compare with the heavenly bliss that is awaiting those who are in Christ Jesus.

  ~The inconveniences of an unsettled state, make a happy settlement the more welcome, the best is just ahead for the redeemed.

 -----------

 >1st Cor. 10:11 Now all these things happened unto them (the Jews) for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition,

  ~ These things happened to them as a warning to us. --- All this was written in the Scriptures to teach us who live in these last days.

  ~~ There are Christians in some parts of the world that are severely persecuted, most of us here in this country don't realize how well off we are, but their persecution will pass; it's only for a brief time. -- This life passes like a vapor; it's much like our breath in the cold air.

  > James 4:14 For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

 > Job 7:6 My days are swifter than a weaver’s shuttle, --

 ~ If any of you that have worked in the weave room know about that.

  -------------

Back to Gen.15:14 -- God is still speaking to Abram in the deep sleep.

  Genesis 15:14 And also that nation, (Egypt) whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

   God's judgment is to do with the 10 plagues that will be sent on Egypt, by which God not only constrained the Egyptians to release Israel, but punished them for all the hardships they put them through.

--------

~Although God may allow persecutors and oppressors to trample upon his people for a while, the time will come that HE will reckon with them; for their day is coming.

>Ps. 37:12 -17 The wicked plotteth against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. --13The Lord shall laugh at him: for he seeth that his day is coming. 14The wicked have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as be of upright conversation. (upright manner of living)

15Their sword shall enter into their own heart, and their bows shall be broken. 16A little that a righteous man hath is better than the riches of many wicked. 17For the arms of the wicked shall be broken: but the LORD upholdeth the righteous.

Listen as I read Gen.15:14 again;

  Genesis 15:14 And also that nation, (Egypt) whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

-------

And we see this comes to pass in;

~ Exo.12: 35 -36 And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses;

and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment: -- 36And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.

 ~ The word “borrow” is the Hebrew word "shaw-al", meaning “to ask.” -- God gave them favor in the sight of the Egyptians so that when they asked, the Egyptians gave (not lent) them whatever they wanted. -- They knew that they'd never see one another again. -- would you loan something to a person that you knew you'd never see again?

 ~ It was God’s way of collecting back wages for their years of slave labor in Egypt. -- The Egyptians owed the Israelites so much in back wages that the children of Israel spoiled them; that is, Israel left with much of Egypt’s wealth.

~ God saw to it that they would not only have a land to go to, but a good stock to carry with them as well.

---------

The number of years was actually 430.

  Ex.12:40–41 Now the sojourning (temporary time) of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.

  41And it came to pass at the end of the four hundred and thirty years, even the selfsame day it came to pass, that all the hosts of the LORD went out from the land of Egypt.

  -------

  ~Lets remember that when Joseph was overlord of the land of Egypt, Jacob and Josephs brethren were not in bondage, they were not slaves, so all the 430 years they were there were not really bad years at all. ~

  ~ When the Israelites arrived in Egypt they were guests of the Pharaoh for whom Joseph served as grand vizier. -- Joseph arranged for his family to live in the Goshen area (that part of northern Egypt on the eastern side of the Nile Delta) where they were pretty much left alone by the Egyptians and continued to lead a peaceful life for many years.

  ~~ I want to say right here, that the Lord truly does work in mysterious ways, while His chosen people were in Egypt they grew from 70 people to about 600,000 men, not counting women and children.

  >Ex.12: 37And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot that were men, --

   -- considering the women and children the number is thought to be about 2 ½ too 3 million people altogether, and possibly more when they left.

  -------------

   ~ I want to point out some facts that I believe will interest you; it certainly is interesting to me, and keep in mind there are no discrepancies in Gods Word.

  ----------

  >Gen. 46: 26-27 All the souls that came with Jacob into Egypt, which came out of his loins, besides Jacob’s sons’ wives, all the souls were threescore and six;

   66 -- 27And the sons of Joseph, which were born him in Egypt, were two souls: all the souls of the house of Jacob, which came into Egypt, were threescore and ten. 70

The number 66 in verse 26 does not include Jacob, Joseph, and his 2 son's Manasseh, and Ephraim. ~ But does in verse 27, then the number comes to 70.

   ---------

  Deut. 10:22 Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten (70) persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

   ~ LISTEN, in the N.T. Stephen, the 1st recorded Christian martyr, tells us the number was 75 that went into Egypt. -- Which was it? --70 or 75.

   > Acts 7:14 After this, Joseph sent for his father Jacob and his whole family, seventy-five in all.

 ~ Listen, Jacob's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren amounted to sixty-six (Gen 46:8-26).

How did Steven, in the N.T. arrive at the number 75?

~~ If to the sixty-six we add the nine wives of Jacob's sons (Judah's and Simeon's wives were dead. -- We have the 75 that Steven tells of.

 ~~ It was appropriate that in this inspired speech of Stephen the women should have been reckoned among the number going down into Egypt with Jacob.

So both the number 70 in the O.T. -- and the number 75 in the N.T. can be arrived at using differing means of numbering Jacob's family. -- There are not nor can there be any discrepancies in Gods word, if we'll search it out we'll find the answer.
