# 16~ MOSES-pt. 3 SS DEUT.32:48-52 9-21-14

@@@ Num.20: @@@ Exo.17: @@@ Deut. 31: @@@ Deut. 34:

@This is the 16th week that we have been looking into the faith of the people that are named here in Hebrews 11: - called by many the "hall of the faithful" chapter, I'm sure that there's much more that could be said to do with the great truths of the faith of theses dear people.

@ ~Today we'll talk some more about Moses, about the people grumbling and complaining to him, and finally about his death, and see why he was not allowed to enter into the promise land with his people, and we'll see that God Chose Joshua to be the new leader of His people.

@~Joshua will be leading God's people when they march around the walls of Jericho, and how that by following Gods directions, the walls fall down.

@------

@~ As we're about to read, Moses was not perfect, just as any man he had his flaws and his times of weakness, and the Bible faithfully records many of these shortcomings.

Listen as I read DEUT.32:48-52.

@Deut.32: 48 - 52 And the LORD spake unto Moses that selfsame day, saying, 49Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:

@50And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:

@ 51Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of Meribah-Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified ME not in the midst of the children of Israel.

@ 52Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.

----------

Just what was the trespass that Moses had done?

~Moses was told to speak to a rock to get water from it, but instead he struck the rock twice with a rod, he was angry at the constant murmuring and complaining of the people.

~ The ROCK was a type of Christ; Christ was to be crucified once and for all, not twice.

>Heb.10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.

>1st Cor.10:4 And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.

------

@@@ Num. 20:1-13 Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin (a part of the Desert) in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

~Here we have the death of Miriam -- no days of mourning -- Miriam died and was buried. -- Because of her and Aarons complaining against Moses, neither was allowed to enter the Promised Land.

Numbers 12: 1-2 And Miriam and Aaron spake against Moses because of the Ethiopian woman whom he had married: for he had married an Ethiopian woman. 2And they said, Hath the LORD indeed spoken only by Moses? hath he not spoken also by us? And the LORD heard it.

--------

~Here they are back at Kadesh, they had been here almost 40 years earlier and now theyfre back again, 40 years of wandering, going nowhere. --- This was a new generation, most of the others had died off, yet they were as bad as those that went before them murmuring and complaining.

Nearly forty years earlier, and in another place, God brought water from a rock. But on the first occasion Moses was instructed to strike the rock.

@@@ Exodus 17: 1- 7 And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

@2Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

@ 3And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

@4And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

@ 5And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, (turned the water of the Nile to blood) take in thine hand, and go.

@6Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

@ 7And he called the name of the place Massah, (to tempt) and Meribah, (strife) because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

@~It's really hard to understand how this people could say such a thing, after all that they had saw God do for them. -- They truly were a stiff neck people.

BACK TO num. 20:

~ Num. 20:1-13 Then came the children of Israel, even the whole congregation, into the desert of Zin (a part of the Desert) in the first month: and the people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.

2And there was no water for the congregation: and they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.

~This was a stiff neck and complaining people, here they are whining and murmuring again, this is the seventh time of their murmuring, and it is over the lack of water. -- You'd think the people would have compassion on Moses and Aaron, after all, their sister Miriam had just died and was buried.

----

3And the people chode (complained against) with Moses, and spake, saying, "Would God that we had died when our brethren died before the LORD!

4And why have ye brought up the congregation of the LORD into this wilderness, that we and our cattle should die there?

5And wherefore have ye made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there any water to drink."

6And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation, and they fell upon their faces: and the glory of the LORD appeared unto them.

7And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, "8Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock (notice God told Moses to speak unto the rock) before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink."

9And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as HE commanded him.

10And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock?

~ Notice Moses was angry, he calls them rebels, and that is what they were, and then strikes the rock twice, but he was commanded to speak to the rock.

11And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.

12And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron, "Because ye (plural) believed me not, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye (both) shall not bring this congregation into the land which I have given them."

13This is the water of Meribah; (strife) because the children of Israel strove with the LORD, and he was sanctified in them.

-------------------------

God commanded them speak to the rock, but instead they spoke to the people, and smote the rock, which they were not commanded to do.

@ ==========

@ @@@ Deut. 31:1- 8 And Moses went and spake these words unto all Israel. 2And he said unto them, I am an hundred and twenty years old this day; I can no more go out and come in: also the LORD hath said unto me, Thou shalt not go over this Jordan.

@3The LORD thy God, HE will go over before thee, and he will destroy these nations from before thee, and thou shalt possess them: and Joshua, he shall go over before thee, as the LORD hath said.

@4And the LORD shall do unto them as he did to Sihon and to Og, kings of the Amorites, and unto the land of them, whom he destroyed.

@5And the LORD shall give them up before your face, that ye may do unto them according unto all the commandments which I have commanded you.

@ 6Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

@7And Moses called unto Joshua, and said unto him in the sight of all Israel, Be strong and of a good courage: for thou must go with this people unto the land which the LORD hath sworn unto their fathers (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob) to give them; and thou shalt cause them to inherit it.

@8And the LORD, he it is that doth go before thee; he will be with thee, he will not fail thee, neither forsake thee: fear not, neither be dismayed.

@ --------------------

In chapter 34: we'll see that Moses died and that God buried him.

@ @@@ Deut. 34:1- 12 And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. --

@~Evidently, the mountain of Nebo was the peak of Mt. Pisgah, which is across the Jordan River from Jericho.

@ -- And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan, 2And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,

3And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar. -- (Jericho is called the city of palm trees.)

@

@4And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.

@------

@5So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

@ 6And HE buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

@---------------

@LISTEN ~ there are some people that say that it would be impossible for Moses to talk about his own death and his own burial.

@ But if we keep in mind that God's Word is inspired, and then there is no particular reason why the Holy Spirit could not enable Moses to write about his own death and burial.

@ ~ There are others that think that Moses obituary in Chapter 34 was probably written by Joshua.

@----------

@~The phrase buried him in a valley does not mean that God brought Moses down into the Jordan Valley and buried him. -- There was evidently some small area or valley at the top of the mountain. -- He was buried there. -- No one knows his actual burial place.

@~There doubtless would have been people that would have made a shrine of some sort at that location, and made an idol out of Moses.

@ ~~ Duet 34: 7And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.

@ 8And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

@ 9And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

@10And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

@11In all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,

@ 12And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel.

@ -------------

~ As important as Moses was to the Children of Israel, it is always important to remember that Moses himself was not the deliverer or redeemer of Israel. It was God who redeemed Israel, not Moses; Moses was God's prophet, His spokesman.

~There was no one else like Moses because of the Mosaic law and the covenant that he gave to Israel.

@No prophet could ever arise in Israel like unto Moses, because no prophet could ever give the Law to Israel that he gave or the other miracles that God worked through him.

@Moses would be the outstanding leader of Israel until a person with a greater law than the Mosaic Law entered the scene.

@~And that is what happened when Jesus Christ came to fulfill the Law that was given by Moses. ~~ Jesus was the founder and mediator of a new and better covenant.

@>John 1:17 For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

@ >Heb. 8:6 But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises.

@ >Heb. 9:15 And for this cause he is the mediator of the new testament, that by means of death, for the redemption of the transgressions that were under the first testament, they which are called might receive the promise of eternal inheritance.

@------------

@~ Moses will to be raised from the dead and brought into the Promised Land.

@God was preparing the circumstances so that He could bring Moses back to the Mount of Transfiguration. --

@ ~ Even though Moses did not enter the Promised Land in his lifetime, on the Mount of Transfiguration he stood in the Promised Land with Elijah and Jesus in the presence of Peter, James and John.

@ > Mt 17:1-3 And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

@2And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

@3And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

@ ~ So Moses did get to the Promised Land eventually. The Law could not bring Moses into the land, but the Lord Jesus Christ brought him in.
