Summary: To show that we don't need vows, oaths or promises of any kind just say yes if we mean yes, or no if we mean no.

I. EXORDIUM:

Do you make oaths?

Yes before I believed.

Now. not at all.

Matthew 5:33-38 (Amplified Bible)

Again, you have heard that it was said to the men of old, You shall not swear falsely, but you shall perform your oaths to the Lord [as a religious duty].

But I tell you, Do not bind yourselves by an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is the throne of God;

Or by the earth, for it is the footstool of His feet; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King.

And do not swear by your head, for you are not able to make a single hair white or black.

Let your Yes be simply Yes, and your No be simply No; anything more than that comes from the evil one.

You have heard that it was said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.

VII. EXPLICATION:

A. Author: Apostle Matthew

B. Keyword: Fulfilled

C. Emphatic Thought: Fulfillment of Old Testament Prophecy

E. Apparent Purpose: To show that JESUS of Nazareth was the kingly Messiah of Jewish prophecy.

VIII. MAIN BODY:

Matthew 14:9 (Amplified Bible)

And the king was distressed and sorry, but because of his oaths and his guests, he ordered it to be given her;

A. The king was distressed and sorry

"And the king was distressed and sorry,"

Sorry or "lupeo" in Greek meaning:

1. to distress

2. to be sad

3. cause grief, grieve, be in heaviness, (be) sorrow (-ful), be (make) sorry

When you feel sorry for what you've done, it distresses you, cause you to be sad and you grieve in heaviness, that's what happened to king Herod because something he has promised in unguarded moments, will not make him back down on it, because again he's concerned with his personal dignity and personal reputation.

Some people in the bible who felt sorry for what they have done:

1. King David - sorry for his sins.

Psalms 38:18 (Amplified Bible)

For I do confess my guilt and iniquity; I am filled with sorrow for my sin.

2 Corinthians 7:9-10 (Amplified Bible)

Yet I am glad now, not because you were pained, but because you were pained into repentance [and so turned back to God]; for you felt a grief such as God meant you to feel, so that in nothing you might suffer loss through us or harm for what we did.

For godly grief and the pain God is permitted to direct, produce a repentance that leads and contributes to salvation and deliverance from evil, and it never brings regret; but worldly grief (the hopeless sorrow that is characteristic of the pagan world) is deadly [breeding and ending in death].

2. The disciples - sorry for what will happen to JESUS.

Matthew 17:23 (Amplified Bible)

And they will kill Him, and He will be raised [to life] again on the third day. And they were deeply and exceedingly grieved and distressed.

3. Other servants of the king - distressed about the unforgiving heart of a fellow servant.

Matthew 18:31 (Amplified Bible)

When his fellow attendants saw what had happened, they were greatly distressed, and they went and told everything that had taken place to their master.

4. The Corinthian church not to be grieved on Paul's visit

2 Corinthians 2:2 (Amplified Bible)

For if I cause you pain [with merited rebuke], who is there to provide me enjoyment but the [very] one whom I have grieved and made sad?

5. The Corinthian church - sorry for Paul's letter

2 Corinthians 7:8 (Amplified Bible)

For even though I did grieve you with my letter, I do not regret [it now], though I did regret it; for I see that that letter did pain you, though only for a little while;

6. The Corinthian church - sorry for sins that made them repent

2 Corinthians 7:9 (Amplified Bible)

Yet I am glad now, not because you were pained, but because you were pained into repentance [and so turned back to God]; for you felt a grief such as God meant you to feel, so that in nothing you might suffer loss through us or harm for what we did.

We're not protecting our reputation, GOD does it for us. That's why the bible is very careful about making a vow or oaths that you don't mean to do.

B. The king controlled by his oaths, he ordered John, the Baptist to be killed

"but because of his oaths and his guests, he ordered it to be given her;"

Oath or "horkos" in Greek meaning:

1. a limit

2. restraint

When you make an oath, you're putting a restraint on yourself, you have limited yourself until you fulfill that oath. It's already a sin to make vows or oaths before GOD in the new testament.

Matthew 5:33-38 (Amplified Bible)

Again, you have heard that it was said to the men of old, You shall not swear falsely, but you shall perform your oaths to the Lord [as a religious duty].

But I tell you, Do not bind yourselves by an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is the throne of God;

Vow - To give, consecrate or dedicate to God by a solemn promise. A solemn promisemade to God, or by a pagan to his deity.

Psalms 50:14 (Amplified Bible)

Offer to God the sacrifice of thanksgiving, and pay your vows to the Most High,

Psalms 56:12 (Amplified Bible)

Your vows are upon me, O God; I will render praise to You and give You thank offerings.

Psalms 61:5 (Amplified Bible)

For You, O God, have heard my vows; You have given me the heritage of those who fear, revere, and honor Your name.

Psalms 66:13 (Amplified Bible)

I will come into Your house with burnt offerings [of entire consecration]; I will pay You my vows,

Be careful about your vows, make sure you fulfill it before GOD.

IX. CONCLUSION:

Praise, worship and thank You very much LORD JESUS for You taught me to value my yes and no.
