Psa. 51:1-19

1. DAVID'S CONDITION Notice the consequences of sin.

A. Sin Soils The Soul -Sin will make the soul feel dirty. v.2 "Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin"

Isa ch 64 v. 6 "But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."

Note Our :-

(a) Pollution "But we are all as an unclean thing,"

(b) Poverty "and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags;"

(c) Powerlesness "and we all do fade as a leaf;"

(d) Pointlessness "and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."

B. Sin Saturates The Mind - (Ill. David’s sin was always on his mind!)

v. 3 "For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me."

There was no :-

(a) Forgiving David's Sin

(b) Forgetting David's Sin

(c) Forgoing David's Sin

C. Sin Stings The Conscience - David was broken because he had hurt God! v. 4 " Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest."

Prodigal Luke Ch 15 v 21 " And the son said unto him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and in thy sight, and am no more worthy to be called thy son."

D. Sin Saddens The Heart - (Ill. David has lost his joy and wants it back!) v. 12 " Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation;"

E. Sin Sickens The Body - (Ill. David’s sin has begun to take a physical toll on him.) v. 8 "Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice."

F. Sin Sours The Spirit - (Ill. David had a wrong spirit ) v. 10 " Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."

G. Sin Seals The Lips - v. 13-15 v.13 "Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee."

Sin will take away your shout, your song and your service. You can shout - there’s no presence of God. You can’t sing - there’s no joy. You can’t testify - there’s no reality in your life.

II. DAVID'S CONFESSION v.1 "Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.2 Wash me throughly from mine iniquity , and cleanse me from my sin.3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me."

A Broken Spirit Confesses Sin - Because Of :-

God's Character - "Have mercy upon me, O God,

God's Covenant - "according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions"

God's Cleansing -"Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin"

A Broken Spirit Comprehends Sinfulness - Because it is -

1. transgressions, (evp), pesha, rebellion.

2. iniquity, (Nwe), avon, crooked dealing.

3. sin, (tajx), chattath, error and wandering. Adam Clarke.

We Made Our Mark - blot out my transgressions 1. transgressions-acts of rebellion, crossing over God's line.

We Mobilized Our Mistreatment - 2.Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity iniquity-inward crookedness.

We Missed God's Mark - 3. and my sin is ever before me."sin-missing the mark, failing to meet God's standard.

A Broken Spirit Concedes Submission -Because Of the :-

(a) Guiltiness Of Sin v.3 "For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me."

(b) Godlessness Of Sin v.4 " Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest."

Ver. 4. Against thee.

1. Thee, an holy God--a God of pure eyes, and that cannot endure to behold iniquity.

2. Thee, a just God--who will punish sin.

3. Thee, an Almighty God.

(c) Grieviousness Of Sin v.5" Behold, I was shapen in iniquity, and in sin did my mother conceive me."

(d) Gravity Of Sin v.6" Behold, thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom."

It Robs Us Of God's Riches,God's Righteousness,& God's Reconciliation

DAVID'S CALL V.7 - 10 "7 Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities.10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. " For The :-

(a) Removal Of His Sin v.7 "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow" Note The :-

Misery attached to Sin,

Memory attached to Sin v.3" and my sin is ever before me."

Mercy attached to Sin v.7 "Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean: wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow"

Ver. 7. Here is,

1. Faith in the act of an atonement for sin. "I shall be clean."

2. Faith in the method of its application. "Purge me, " Sprinkled as the blood of sacrifices.

3. Faith in its efficacy. "I shall be whiter, "etc.

(b) Restoration Of His Joy v.8&9 "Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.9 Hide thy face from my sins, and blot out all mine iniquities"

(c) Renewal Of His Spirit V10 "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. "

4. DAVID'S CONCERN v.10 "Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit."

Ver. 10. Note The :-

1. change to be effected. A clean heart. & A right spirit.

2. The power by which it is accomplished.

(a) A creative power, such as created the world at first.

(b) A renewing power, such as continually renews the face of the earth.

3. The means of acquirement of these blessings. The prayer, "Create, "

Free Spirit "thy free spirit"

John ch 6 v.44 "No man can come to me, except the Father which hath sent me draw him: and I will raise him up at the last day."

Eph ch 4 v. 30 "And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."

5. DAVID'S COMMITMENT v13"Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee."

6. DAVID'S CONTENTMENT v14 "Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation: and my tongue shall sing aloud of thy righteousness."
