John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever--

17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

18 I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.

John 16:5 "Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, 'Where are you going?'

6 Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief.

7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I go, I will send him to you.

8 When he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment:

9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me;

10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;

11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned.

12 "I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.

13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.

There is probably not a more mysterious and mystical doctrine in the Bible than that of the Holy Spirit.

Often misunderstood, and difficult to explain.

God The Father – well, we know what a Father is.

God the Son – we know what a son is, and he’s become human, so… we get that.

But the Holy Spirit, is more challenging.

It’s complicated by the fact that the word Spirit in the Scripture can be translated more than one way: It can be translated

Spirit

Ghost

Wind

Breath

All of those words can translate the Greek word pneuma.

So how many of you grew up hearing him referred to as the Holy Ghost? 400 years ago, when the King James Version was translated, the word Ghost didn’t have as much strange baggage as it does now.

Many strange things have been done in the name of the Holy Spirit

The Holy Spirit is often misunderstood… or forgotten.

<ILLUS> Man who went to a church service in a very formal church. He was feeling full of praise, but everyone was quiet. Finally, when someone said something he liked, he said loudly, “Praise the Lord!” An usher came up to tell him to be quiet.

“But I’ve got the Holy Spirit,” he protested.

“Well, you didn’t get Him here, now be quiet!”

The Holy Spirit is not a force… although He is powerful.

The Holy Spirit is not a feeling… although we can feel him.

The Holy Spirit is not a phenomena… although we can see results of him being present.

So who is the Holy Spirit, and what does he want to do in my life?

Core truths you have to know about the Holy Sprit:

1. The Holy Spirit is God, and is a Person.

Acts 5:3,4 Then Peter said, "Ananias, how is it that Satan has so filled your heart that you have lied to the Holy Spirit…? You have not lied to men but to God."

The Holy Spirit is a person.

He has mind:

Romans 8:27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.

He has will:

Acts 13:2 While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them."

He has emotions:

And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God… Ephesians 4:30

He is not a force, not an impersonal Power, he is a being, a person, a part of the Trinity.

2. The Holy Spirit lives within believers.

Romans 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit. Ephesians 1:13

A seal was a mark of ownership.

A seal was a mark of protection.

Today, a decorative wax seal on the back of an envelope is a decoration. In biblical days it was more like a padlock. If it was tampered with, you could tell.

To mess with the sealed letter was to mess with the guy who sealed it!

What does the Holy Spirit do in Us?

? He is our source of spiritual power.

Luke 24:49 I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high."

Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."

Are you tired of being powerless?

• Powerless to resist temptation?

• Powerless to be brave?

• Powerless to witness to others?

• Powerless to defeat sin?

When you find yourself powerless, you need to surrender yourself fresh to the Holy Spirit’s control… give Him control of the area you’re sruggling in… ask him to empower you… then trust him enough to act, even when you don’t feel like it.

The power will be there.

What you need to do is seek the Holy Spirit – he is the source of power for a believer!

? He is our source of Guidance.

And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- the Spirit of truth. John 14:16-17

<ILLUS> My first cross-country trip to visit Liz’ family… printed out Yahoo maps directions. But her dad recommended a different path. I wrote that one down too… Once I got off I-44, I was stressed. Didn’t want to mess this up! Getting lost for an hour or two would be a bad impression. ?

The next time I came out, I had Liz with me. No stress. She knew those roads. I didn’t have a map of every turn… but I had the map with me.

The map is WITH us. The Holy Spirit says “turn here.” Keep right here… be careful here… watch out for this… No, we don’t know every step, but we have the map with us, and he won’t lead us wrong.

Since GPS technology is extremely accessible, people have become more and more reliant on them to get from point A to point B, even on short trips across town. Remember, when MapQuest was the latest rage in navigation? Even then you had to pay attention to how far away the next turn was.

With GPS systems, turn-by-turn directions make automobile navigation seamless and stress-free. But what happens when we rely too heavily on turn-by-turn direction?

Recently a 67-year old woman from Belgium, Sabine Moureau, departed her house to pick up a friend at a train station in Brussels. She programmed her GPS to take her to the station. But, what should have been a 90 mile trip ended up being a 900 mile journey.

For some reason, she didn’t realize something was wrong, until she arrived in Croatia. Sabine admits that her own bemusement was to blame for her long tans-European trek: “I was absent-minded so

I kept on putting my foot down,” she said to a local newspaper.

Despite, all the hints revealing she was going to wrong way (the time it took, the changing languages on the signs, the mileage), Sabine compromised her time, gas, and common sense in order to follow wrong turn-by-turn directions.

? He sanctifies us into the likeness of Jesus.

Sanctify: To make holy & pure; to separate to God’s ownership.

Matthew 3:11 "I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come one who is more powerful than I, whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.

Ephesians 5:18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

19 Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Sing and make music in your heart to the Lord,

20 always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Every Christian HAS the Holy Spirit, but every Christian has not been BAPTIZED or FILLED with the Holy Spirit.

This is something that the Scripture clearly instructs Christians to seek AFTER being saved!

Recently, the Holy Spirit gave me a powerful reminder of His constant nearness in the darkest of times as I reflected on an event which took place in our family a number of years ago. Our 4 year old son, Jesse, had just lost his second eye to cancer. Those were heart wrenching days for us as we watched him struggle to understand why he could no longer see. Blindness did not seem fair to him and he let us know. We grieved as we observed his anger and fear often demonstrated in tears, temper, and long periods of withdrawal and silence.

One night, about two weeks after he had become blind, Tim and I tucked him into bed and as we were leaving the room he surprised us by asking that we please leave the light on! At first we refused, reminding him that “we always turn off the lights at night”, but he insisted. We were bewildered and pondered the thought, “Jesse can no longer see the light and yet the light is still so important to him!” “Why?” And then he became so visibly upset about the prospect of sleeping in a dark room that we finally agreed that the light must remain on. We kept our word knowing that while the light did nothing to illuminate his world the knowledge that light was present brought comfort and peace to his heart. To our amazement the promise of light yielded immediate calm and Jesse fell into a peaceful sleep.

I realized that our son could not see the light and yet through complete trust in his parents promise, “Jesse, the light is on,” he knew that it was so. This knowledge of the presence of light, through trust, produced peace and the ability to rest even while his eyes were veiled by darkness. Jesse’s blindness to the light did not alter the “fact” that the light was present for while his own senses signaled that all was dark he slept all the while in a room flooded with light!
