Summary: This sermon was preached the week after the Supreme Court Ruled that Gay Marriage was protected under the constitution. It addresses how our government has systematically replaced the church as the source of hope and help for the people of our nation.

Our Government Has Replaced God

For all of my life, I have view the United States of America as the greatest country on the face of the earth. Our country has been blessed by God with great resources and a great Christian heritage.

But, last week, our Supreme Court made a ruling that will forge a weapon that will be used to attack the Churches of the Living God.

Before I get to that ruling and my beliefs on what it means for us, I would like to take a historic look at the Supreme Court and try to determine if it has the wisdom to mandate the affairs of a nation.

Can 9 men and women really posses greater wisdom than the millions of people that make us this nation?

This morning’s sermon is a little bit of a history lesson. I want each of you to leave here knowing that the wisdom of men is faulty and cannot be relied upon on an eternal basis.

I want to shine a light on some of the more scandalous decisions of the high court so that you can fully understand that they all have feet of clay, that the men and women of the Supreme Court are just that, men and women, nothing more…

Let’s start our tour of the Supremes way back in 1857-Dread Scott vs Sanford. In this decision the Supreme Court upheld slavery and the right of one man to own another

Then after the slaves were freed, in 1896 Plessy vs Furguson the Supreme Court upheld segregation stating that “separate but equal was fine.”

Moving forward to 1944 in Korematzu vs United States, the Supreme Court ruled that the Government could imprison U.S. citizens based on their ethnicity with the mass imprisonment of Americans of Japanese descent.

After these pitiful decisions, the Supreme Court started an attack on all things religious, specifically, Christian.

In 1948 McCollum vs Board of Education they ruled that religious education in public schools was unconstitutional.

In 1961 Torcaso vs Watkins they ruled that belief in God was not a requirement for holding public office. This ruling alone has probably resulted in more immoral public officials than any other ruling.

Then in 1962 Engel vs. Vitale the Supreme Court ruled that prayer in public schools was unconstitutional.

Then in 1963 Abington School District vs Schempp, they continued their rout of God from our schools ruling that Bible reading over the intercom at public schools was unconstitutional.

But they weren’t finished. In 1968 Epperson vs Arkansas the Supremes ruled that banning of the teaching of evolution was unconstitutional. Paving the way for replacing God with the philosophies of man.

Their removal of God from our schools continued in 1980 Stone vs Graham, finding that the posting of the 10 Commandments in public schools was unconstitutional.

But they weren’t satisfied with just removing prayer, Bible reading, and the 10 Commandments. In 1985 Wallace vs Jaffree they ruled that even a moment of silence at public schools or school event s was unconstitutional.

Further, in 1987 the Supreme Court ruled that the teaching of “creation science” was unconstitutional.

Once they eroded the moral fiber of the schools, they moved on to all public properties with the 1989 Alleghney County vs ACLU, stating that Nativity Scenes on public land were unconstitutional.

The final blow to the school system was delivered in 1992 Lee vs Weisman, ruling that Clergy offering prayer at graduation or other school events was unconstitutional.

Indeed, the Supreme Court assumed the power of life and death in the 1973 Woe vs Wade ruling that made abortion on demand the law of the land.

Just to put the outcome of that decision into perspective, all abortions performed since 1973 would be equal to the combined population of California and New York State…

And last week, the latest act of arrogance and hubris by the Supreme Court, same sex marriage has been made the law of the land.

Way back in Genesis 2:24, God established and defined marriage when He said, “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”

It seems that, as of last Friday, the Supreme Court of the United States of America knows more than God Himself. That even the rulings of God are subject to review.

Let me say this before I go on. Have the Judges of the Supreme Court made some good decision in the history of this country? yes, absolutely. But my point is that they have made some equally bad decisions as well.

They are men and women, just as you and I, and their ability to make bad decisions are just as probable as they are for you or I.

What men and women do in the privacy of their own homes is none of my business. What any individual does or does not do is between them and God.

However, when you mandate what I must say, believe, or teach, then you have crossed a line that was drawn by God Himself.

To dictate what a people will believe and honor is tyranny. To force someone to do something that is against their religious convictions is contrary to the 1st amendment of the Constitution.

Further, it is contrary to the Declaration of Independence, which states that our “rights” are “God given” and thus cannot be taken away by mere men.

For the past 50 years, the Supreme Court has been relentless in its quest to remove all things religious from our schools and public discourse. Why???

Because our government has, whether premeditated or not, been on a mission move the faith of our people from God to government.

In the past, it was God who gave people hope. In the past, it was the Church that offered physical help and hope to the needy.

In the past it was salvation through Jesus Christ that made a man or woman better than they were the day before…

But in today’s society, it is the government that people go to when they have a problem they cannot solve by themselves.

In today’s society it is the government that offers physical help and hope when people are in need.

In today’s society it is the government that offers salvation and hope to men and women who find themselves in dire straits.

While our government has been systematically removing all things religious, or more specifically, all things Christian from our society, it has simultaneously been inserting itself into our culture as the great savior of those in need.

Starting with Woodrow Wilson, the first Fabian Socialist President, through FDR with his massive social programs, to LBJ and his war on poverty, leading up to our current administration which has worked to increase the welfare and disability roles to such an extent that today, there are more people on government assistance than there are people working.

All leading to the ultimate usurpation of the Church and the displacement of Jehovah God as the true source of hope and life.

On Friday, the US Supreme Court ruled in a 5 to 4 decision that same-sex “marriage” is a constitutional right on the basis of the majority’s interpretation of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Not only did they attempt to assume the role of God Almighty who has already declared that marriage is only between one man and one woman…

…but five black-robed tyrants have overturned the votes of 50 million Americans in 30 states, demanding that we turn our backs on thousands of years of human history, reams of social science data, and most importantly, the clear teachings of Holy Scripture.

Last Friday, the Supreme Court “overruled God” in redefining what marriage is in the United States of America, of what marriage has been for millennia throughout the world.

Exactly two years after the court’s majority took an iron gavel and smashed the federal marriage law, these same five black-robed lawyers came back to finish the job, inventing a sweeping "right" to same-sex “marriage” that no Founding Father intended.

Ultimately, the high court’s ruling will have little to do with marriage, but will have a great and grave impact on the ability of the Church to function within this country.

You see, the bakers and the florists were the canaries in the coal mine for the government. If they could manipulate individual citizen’s religious freedoms, then they could do the same to churches all across America.

Some of you will think I am over reacting, but I am a voracious consumer of information. I have read blogs from gay activists who have stated their goals in plain language.

Once gay marriage becomes the law of the land, they will use this ruling to come after churches that refuse to perform gay marriages. Churches who refuse will be labeled as “haters,” and the Bible itself will be labeled as “hate speech”.

EXAMPLES: Pastor in Canada, pastors in England.

For those of you who doubt me or believe that I am overreacting, meet me in 5 or 10 years and we can discuss the validity of what I am saying today.

For those of you who are offended that I have attacked your political party, might I remind you that my political party is God alone. I hold no allegiance to any political party of this nation, only to the truth of God’s Word.

If you don’t like what I am saying, then I am in good company. The people of Israel didn’t like what Jeremiah had to say either.

Each of you had better decide this day whom you will serve, God or some misguided political party…

Republican, Democrat, Independent, or Libertarian, it doesn’t matter. If you are a Christian, then God is first and foremost in every decision of your life. If He is not, then you had better take inventory of what you believe.

Good News

Well, is there any good news that can come of this? Yes, there is.

If, in fact, this ruling is going to be used as a weapon to attack the Church, it will fail. How do I know this? Because, God’s Word speaks to the weapons used against Him.

He says in Isaiah 54:17(NKJV)

17 No weapon formed against you shall prosper, And every tongue which rises against you in judgment You shall condemn.

This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, And their righteousness is from Me,” Says the LORD.

As a Church, God promised that we will ultimately be victorious. God’s Word also said that we will be hated by the world.

Jesus said in John 15:18-19, 18 “If the world hates you, you know that it hated Me before it hated you. 19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you.

Our country desperately needs a great awakening. I don’t know how or if this will ever occur. I’m not even sure if it can happen in our society as it exists today.

But I know this for sure, God loves us all. His greatest desire is that we all come to repentance through His Son, Jesus the Christ.

As for our nation, there is still hope. He tells us in His word, 2 Chronicles 7:14(NKJV) if My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.

Won’t you come this morning and pray? Come to this alter and pray for our nation. I’m not giving an alter call, I’m asking you, as followers of Christ, to come and pray with me.

Pray for our nation, pray for our leaders, pray for our judges… That God would reign supreme in this land that He has blessed us with.

Come this morning. Pray for God’s mercy. Pray for God to stay his hand of judgment until we have given ourselves to the mission that He has set before us. Pray that His will be done in Heaven and on Earth.

Pray that America can once again be a light of Freedom and Righteousness to a world shrouded in darkness.

Won’t you come?
