Summary: This sermon deals with Satan's rebellion at the end of the millennium and the Great White Throne Judgment.

Satan’s Last Attempt To Win

Revelation 20:7-15

7Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison

8and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.

9They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.

10The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

11Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.

12And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

13The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.

14Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

We pick up our look at Revelation where we stopped last Sunday.

Today we will get more information about those people

living at the end of the 1,000 year millennium

who join Satan in rebellion against Jesus.

As I said in my closing last week,

I believe there are many people like them living today.

So let’s see what the Bible says about them.

VERSE 20:7-8 7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison 8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.

Satan and his demons will be imprisoned in the abyss 1,000 years

while Jesus rules with unopposed control.

They are not permitted to interfere in the affairs of the kingdom.

All those who initially go into the 1,000 year kingdom

are redeemed sinners who had turned to Jesus in faith.

These people who survive the horrible 7 years of Tribulation

enter into the millennium in earthly bodies.

They will not have glorified bodies

like those who are resurrected at the Rapture.

They will have bodies just like we have today.

They still will possess a sinful human nature.

That sin nature is passed on to their children, grandchildren, etc.

So each generation born in the millennium

will have need for salvation.

Many will come to salvation,

but in spite of the most moral society the world will ever know,

a great number will love their sin and reject Jesus.

When Satan is loosed from the abyss,

he provides the leadership needed

to bring rebellion to the surface of those unrepentant sinners.

This act of rebellion will start immediately when he is released.

Verse 8 indicates that this rebellion will be all over the world.

These rebels led by Satan will gather at Gog and Magog.

They gather together to battle.

This will be a huge army because Verse 8 says, “,whose number is as the sand of the sea.

If that number sounds ridiculous, consider this.

The Bible says when Joseph sent for his father and family

a total of 70 people came to Egypt.

A little over 400 years later there were millions

who God lead out of Egypt.

There will be a lot more people than 70

who will go into the millennium.

Instead of 400 years, there will be 1,000 years for births.

There will probably be many billions of people at that time.

So Satan could have a huge gathering to join together for battle.

Now, what is this Gog and Magog?

The names also appear in Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39.

However, those events are not the same that we see here.

The one thing these 2 events have in common

is that both national units are driven

by the spirit of rebellion against God.

In these two cases, God uses the same names

because of the deceptively satanic spirit that motivates them both.

So this Gog and Magog of Revelation will be a massive attack.

They will muster their forces from all over of the world.

VERSE 9: They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.

This huge army led by Satan

will attack Jerusalem where Jesus sits on His throne.

They will surround the city.

However, there will be no battle.

There will be no need for nuclear weapons.

When Satan thinks he has an army too large to be defeated,

fire comes down from heaven from God and devours them.

Satan’s massive army of rebels is totally exterminated.

They will be killed and their souls will go to a place

to await their final sentencing to hell that will shortly take place.

VERSE 10: The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

The beast and false prophet will have been waiting for Satan

in the lake of fire and brimstone during those 1,000 years.

Now Satan joins them.

There will not be a moment's peace for them for all of eternity.

I’ve heard some people say

they will have a party with their buddies when they get to hell.

Does what Verse 10 says sound like a party?

Some of us have family and friends who have no time for Jesus.

Do we want them to spend eternity in hell?

Are we doing anything to help them avoid that terrible place?

VERSE 11: Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.

The word “Him” refers to Jesus.

This describes the final judgment day.

John describes the terrifying scene God let him see.

He sees the Judge who is seated on His throne of Judgment.

All of the accused standing before Jesus.

The verdicts handed down from this throne

will be unbiased, righteous and just.

Ecclesiastes 12:14 says, “For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil.”

Romans 2: 5-6 says, “But in accordance with your hardness and your impenitent heart you are treasuring up for yourself wrath in the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God, 6who "will render to each one according to his deeds":

I know one thing for sure.

I don’t want to be among those standing in judgment!

It will be a fearful thing to stand before God.

Notice the words “from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away.”

That simply means there will be no place to hide from God.

God will search out and bring to this White Throne Judgment

all those who refused to accept Jesus as savior.

VERSE 12: And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God,

The word "dead" speaks of a final resurrection.

All the people who died throughout the history of mankind

who never placed their faith in Jesus and rebelled against God

are resurrected for this final judgment.

They will stand in their resurrected bodies before Jesus.

They will be judged by Him.

Now, their resurrected bodies will not be glorified bodies.

Up to this time, the remains of their dead bodies

have been in places all over the world.

Their souls have been held in a place called “sheol” or “hades”.

It seems this is a place of torment for them.

Yet, the Bible never indicates that sheol or hades

is the place for eternal punishment.

So now their dead bodies are resurrected

and united with a unique physical body.

The obvious question is: Why?

Well, the wicked must stand before Jesus.

As we will see later,

they are sentenced to eternity in the lake of fire.

These new bodies they receive will be capable

of not being burned up in the Lake of Fire.

They will feel the heat and burning for all of eternity.

Verse 12 continues and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

The word “books” is plural

meaning more than one book is opened.

The “books” contain the record of every unsaved person's life.

The books contain a person's every thought, word and deed.

Each unsaved person is judged in accordance with his works.

The books clearly show that each one is a guilty sinner.

Each deserves of eternal punishment.

This reminds us of the words of the Lord Jesus: "There is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed, and nothing concealed that will not be known or brought out into the open" (Luke 8:17)

Remember that the Christian dead have already won their victory.

Those were judged by Jesus at the Bema Seat.

Now is this final fearful scene,

where these include all unbelievers who have ever lived.

This is the resurrection of judgment

and they stand before Christ now at the White Throne Judgment.

The great mass of these unbelievers before God's throne

includes everyone from presidents and kings,

to poor homeless people.

There is no partiality with God as all will now face judgment.

God has kept perfect, comprehensive and accurate records

of every person's life

and those will be measured against God's holy standard.

However, one book is mentioned.

The “Book of Life” is the Lamb's Book of Life

where the names are written of all who have accepted Jesus.

The Christian's sins have been covered by the blood of Jesus.

Those Christians have their names in the Lamb's book of life

and will not stand before Jesus in this judgment

VERSE 13: The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.

Those who are lost wait in torment

in a place of punishment until judgment day.

These are all of the unbelievers though all ages who have died.

God will raise them up for the second resurrection.

The word “sea” may be mentioned here

because it seems the most difficult place

from which dead bodies could be resurrected.

We know that numerous people have drowned in the seas.

During wars numerous people have been killed at sea.

We know that with God, all things are possible.

He knows where human remains can be found.

“Death and hades” refers to God bringing up those lost souls

who have been held there since death up for this judgment.

The lost will be summoned to appear before the judge.

Since their deaths,

their souls have been tormented in a place of punishment.

Now time has finally come for them to be judged and sentenced.

VERSES 14-15: 14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. 15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

The second death is eternal punishment in the lake of fire.

It is experienced only by the unsaved.

Once this final judgment occurs,

there is no further need for either death or Hades.

This final hell is described as the lake of fire.

It may already exist, but presently is not occupied

until the beast Antichrist and the false prophet are cast into it.

They don't arrive there until the end of 7 years of tribulation.

Those who die in their sins in this world

will be sentenced to the lake of fire forever

at the great White Throne Judgment.

The Bible also defines hell as a place of total darkness,

which separates the unbelievers from each other as well.

What is written in these last 2 verses

should drive each of us to continue to spread the gospel

as long as there is breath in your body.

I cannot bear to think of anyone I know

going to this terrible place of torment.

CLOSING:

As we come to the end of chapter 20, the rebellion is over.

Once and for all, human rebellion will have been wiped out.

The Millennium will prove that even the best of conditions,

1,000 years of peace, prosperity, safety, long life, abundance,

cannot change the wickedness of the unredeemed human heart.

Only the Lord Jesus Christ can do that!

Why does God tell us of these awesome events?

To give us every opportunity to escape the terrible judgment.

No believer in Jesus will stand at the Great White Throne.

That terrible spot is reserved only

for those who have rejected Jesus as Savior

and who have refused to accept Jesus as their true Lord.

I think there’s another reason why we are told all of this.

Many people we know are making a terrible mistake!

If they don’t get saved through faith in Jesus,

they will be at this terrible Great White Throne Judgment.

Then they will be cast into the Lake of Fire for eternity.

The question is: Do we care?
