Luke 7:36-50

I. The Proud verse the Humble

- Story of date with Bridget

- Our pride often will drive us to shun people not like us

A. The Pharisee was proud

1. He refused to have Jesus feet washed

2. He refused to greet Jesus with respect

3. He showed his disdain by wanting to prove Him wrong

B. The Woman was Humble

1. Illustration “Love-Letter Lament”

2. She fell at His feet

3. She anointed His feet

4. She loved Him from His feet

II. Love verses Condemnation

A. Illustration “The Love of God”

B. This Pharisee was focused on what sort of woman she was

1. Simon questioned Jesus’ calling “if He were a prophet”

2. Simon worried about being touched by a sinner “what manner of woman this is that touches Him”

3. The illustration of “Judging”

C. The woman was focused on loving Jesus and worshiping Him

1. Her posture- “Stand at His feet” this is the place servants maintained who were waiting to provide service.

a. She stood at His feet behind Him, most likely ashamed to look Him in the face. The holiness of God will put us in such a place.

b. (Rev 1:17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. But he laid his right hand on me, saying, "Fear not, I am the first and the last,)

c. She stood behind Him weeping,

2. Her plan- She washed His feet, she anointed His feet

a. Her acts of service to God showed her true heart of worship

b. Those whom truly love God cannot but help serve the master

3. Her purpose- she loved the one whom loved her

a. Love God with all your heart.

b. She worshiped God with every last bit of pride cast aside

III. Jesus’ Response

A. Illustration “Jesus as an example”

B. Jesus understood their hearts

1. He understood the Pharisees did not know their sin problem

a. Simon looked upon her with hate

b. Jesus loved her

2. He understood the woman knew her sin problem

a. She understood the depth of her sin

b. She understood who it is that can forgive sins

C. Jesus knew how to address their hearts

1. Jesus told Simon a parable

a. There was not forgiveness offered to Simon because he was not repentant.

b. It wasn’t that the woman’s sin was greater, it was that Simon thought so.

2. Jesus forgave the woman

a. She was repentant

b. She wanted the Savior as much as the gift of the Savior.
