Psalm 23
THE TWENTY-THIRD PSALM (1)
“The Lord is my Shepherd and I shall not want.”
Psalm 23 is one of the first verses I learned as a believer. I still think about it, even more now, as it has grown deeper and deeper over the years.
No matter how many times I say this, i must remind myself still today, Jehovah is my shepherd. I have yet to graduate from that truth.
Every want met.
The foundation thought of this part as well as the next is found in the opening words, Jehovah is my Shepherd. As my Shepherd, God cares, loves, provides and protects me! I am his sheep if i hear his voice, know his voice and respond to his voice!
II. I have no wants.
This is based not on that I have no need but rather every need is met. Since my needs are met, whats are secondary because I find satisfaction in God alone.
“He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters (of rest).
There is a two-fold rest in the Christian life; passive rest just lying on Jesus' bosom, active rest in serving the Lord "without fear in holiness and righteousness before him all the days of our life.” There is food as well as rest. "Tender grass.”
“He leads me in paths of righteousness for his names sake.”
It comes to this: the header, the collision, what EVERYTHING is all about. God’s glory. He is all I have and therefore, I have all I need. He leads me to rest in him so I might live and serve him. He leads me in the ways of righteous living so he might be glorified. Since he leads, I am restored!
