2 PETER 3:10-13 “WHEN GOD HAS HIS DAY” PART 1

A) Sometime when you look at our world and the in-roads satan seems to be

making in it, you may get the idea that in the final say, the devil’s gonna win.

* But I must remind you that things are not always as they may seem.

B) I heard the story about a country boy who was dating this girl one night.

* It was just one of those romantic kind of nights, you know.

* The moon was full, the stars were winking at one another .......

* There was a cool summer breeze blowing across the porch, and they were sitting

in the swing, and the crickets were chirping.

C) Down in the valley, the little country church was having choir practice and the

beautiful voices of the hymns were moving through the valley.

* Of course the girl loved the beautiful choir music and she had an appreciation for music.

* She was just caught up in the wonder of the music ... On the other hand the boy was

interested in nature.

* She was thinking about the beautiful choir music ... He was thinking about the crickets chirping.

D) The girl said, “You know, isn’t that beautiful? ... Isn’t that the most beautiful

thing you have ever heard?”

* The boy said, “Yes, and you know they tell me that they make that sound by rubbing

their hind legs together.”

E) You see, friends, things are not always the way they seem.

* When you look around in this world, sometimes you get the idea that this is the devil’s day.

* The night before Jesus was put upon the cross, He said to those who arrested Him in

Luke 22:53 “This is your hour and the power of darkness.”

* I want to remind you that the Bible teaches one day God is going to have His day.

F) Now, this is man’s day – This is man’s day of opportunity.

* The Bible says, “Now is the accepted time. Now is the day of salvation.”

* We are living in the days of grace and you have the opportunity to receive the

Lord Jesus as your Savior.

GOD’S DAY IS COMING

A) Now one of these days, God’s day is going to come and man’s day will be over.

* Man’s day will conclude as v.7 tells us with “the day of judgment against the

perdition of ungodly men.”

* Man’s day will be over and God’s day will begin.

B) When the day of grace ends, the day of God is going to begin.

* That is the theme of the verses we are going to study this morning.

* He says in v.10 “The day of the Lord will come.”

C) He says again in v.12 “Looking for and hasting unto the coming

of the day of God.”

* So I want to talk with you today about some of the features or characteristics

of the day of God when God has His day.

* Now look with me first of all, in the 10th verse at God’s day and .......

(1) THE CREATION

A) The Bible tells us that when God’s day comes, some catastrophic things are

going to take place in the creation.

* In fact, in the beginning of v.11, he says that all these things shall be dissolved.

B) The word “dissolved” there is the Greek word “luo” (loo’-o) and it means

“to loosen or untie.” ... It’s a word you would use to untie a shoe string.

* All of these things, he says, are going to come apart.

* All of these things are going to be dissolved.

C) He is talking about God’s day and what’s going to happen to this creation.

* He points out to us that the time when the earth is going to be dissolved will

come suddenly – Look at v.10 again, he says it “will come as a thief in the night.”

D) The apostle Paul used that terminology in 1 Thess. 5:2 – He says that it will

come as a thief in the night.

* In Rev. 16:15, Jesus said, “Behold, I come as a thief .......”

* Of course, we know that the characteristics of a thief is that he comes

unexpectedly and without warning.

TESTIMONY OF A PROFESSIONAL BURGLAR

A) Several weeks ago I heard a “used-to-be” professional burglar who gave his

heart to Jesus and was living for the Lord now.

* He described how easy it was for him to get into your house.

* He said that in six minutes, he could be in your house, get everything of value

and be out of it, and you would never know what hit you.

B) The Bible says that this day of the Lord and the dissolving of creation

is going to come like that.

* It will come suddenly ... Unexpectedly ... And it will come without warning.

* That’s why it is so important for those who don’t know Jesus to receive Christ

now while they have the opportunity and while the days of grace are still on.

C) He also points out to us that the day of the Lord will come and this creation

will be dissolved completely.

* Now, when you read this 10th verse, Peter sounds like a chemist rather than

a Galilean fisherman.

D) Where did Simon Peter get this kind of information?

* It was certainly contrary to the science of his day.

* I think you and I know where he got his information.

E) Simon Peter is filled and led by the Spirit of God.

* And what Simon Peter has written in this verse and in the following verses is an

accurate statement of the scientific world today as we understand it.

* Do you see the things he says will take place when the day of God comes in this

creation? ... Look at v.10 carefully.

F) He says the heavens shall pass away with a great noise.

* The phrase “great noise” means a loud explosion.

* Peter says that one day this world is going to come to its conclusion, and the

heavens are going to pass away with a tremendous explosion.

BIG BANG THEORY

A) Now one of the ways of how the world came into existence is what they

have been calling for years, “the big bang theory.”

* There are those today who say they believe this whole universe came into

existence by a big bang.

B) Now in a positive way, at least they have come to the point that they

understand there was a point of beginning for the creation of the world.

* But I want to tell you the big bang theory is really about as absurd as anything

I can imagine.

C) Imagine you and I going outside and looking at the CHCC Building.

* You look at me and say, “Man that’s, a nice building.”

* I say to you, “It really is.”

D) You say to me, “Well how did that building come into existence?”

* I say to you, “Well, last week I was walking down New Cut Road and I heard this

tremendous explosion and smoke and debris went everywhere.”

* “When the smoke settled and everything came back down to normal, there stood

the CHCC Building ... Just a big bang and it all came into existence.”

E) Big Bang! ... Can you imagine people believing that this universe of ours,

this creation of ours, is the result of a big bang.

* These unbelieving scientists are looking in the wrong direction.

F) This world didn’t begin with a big bang, but it will end with a big bang.

* Peter says that the heavens shall pass away with a great noise.

* Then he says the elements are going to melt with fervent heat.

G) The words “fervent heat” is used of a terrible and violent fire.

* The word “elements” are the minute parts or portions of which anything is

composed ... Our word for it is atom ... The atoms shall melt.

* The atoms shall be unloosed with a fervent heat.

H) The same Christ who holds this universe in His power is one day going

to let loose.

* The Bible says in Heb. 1:3 that he upholds all things by the Word of His power.

I) Jesus will speak the word and take His hands off of the elements of this

universe and when He does, they will melt with a fervent heat.

* He says that the earth and the works that are therein shall be burned up.

DO YOU UNDERSTAND WHAT HE IS SAYING THERE?

A) He is saying everything about this world that we know is going up in smoke

one of these days.

* All of man’s achievements, everything that man has dreamed for and schemed

for, it’s all going to go up in smoke.

* All the magnificent buildings that men have designed and constructed, they’re all

going up in smoke.

* In Heb. 1:10-12 ....... Paul describes what is going to happen when God’s day

comes in the creation.

B) This whole universe is winding down – Everything is winding down.

* When you buy a car, it doesn’t start looking newer, it starts looking older.

* When you buy a house, it doesn’t get better, it gets worse.

* It starts cracking and peeling and creaking.

C) In other words, everything is going downward.

* That’s what is true in this universe.

* The earth is wobbling on its axis like a top that is running down.

D) All the things you see in this world are on the way out.

* When God has His day, the earth and all of the works that are therein

shall be burned up.

* Look again at Heb. 1:12 “They shall be changed, but thou art the same.”

CLOSE

A) Do you see what that verse is saying to you?

* It is saying to you that this world and everything in it, one of these days,

is going to pass away.

* It’s going to dissolve, but there is one who remains the same – Jesus Christ,

the same yesterday, today and forever.

B) That’s why a man is a fool to wrap his hands around anything in this old world

and put his hopes around that instead of Jesus Christ.

* Friend, if you have your choice between everything this world has to offer

and the Lord Jesus Christ .......

* Why take hold of something that is going to pass away – That is going up in

smoke, and not rather choose Jesus who is going to exist for all eternity.

C) So the day of God in the creation simply means that one of these days,

it will all be dissolved.

* In fact, it’s in the process now of being dissolved.

* Jesus is coming – If you’re not ready, you had better get ready.
