JOINED To The LORD-IV—1Corinthians 6:12-20

Those Uncontrollable Christians

Attention:

Some of you are missing out on your responsibility to the Lord God!...But you are going about it in the wrong way...You’re going about it on your terms & thus without Jesus! God may have showed up but you did not recognize the opportunity.

Lk. 19:41-44—“Now as He drew near, He saw the city & wept over it, saying, “If you had known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. “For days will come upon you when your enemies will build an embankment around you, surround you & close you in on every side, & level you, & your children within you, to the ground; & they will not leave in you one stone upon another, because you did not know the time of your visitation.”

1Sam. 15:22-23—“So Samuel said: "Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings & sacrifices, As in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, And to heed than the fat of rams. For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, And stubbornness is as iniquity & idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the LORD, He also has rejected you from being king.””

*The apostle Paul warned the church at Corinth of the inherent danger of sexual immorality.

‘Inherent’= “existing in something as a permanent, essential, or characteristic attribute”

God must be allowed to control our bodies, so...

God’s people must be joined to the Lord.

Why must God be allowed to control our bodies?...& Why must God’s people be joined to the Lord?

4 distinctions emerge from our being joined to the Lord.

We’ve found previously that When you/we are Joined to the Lord...

1. His MASTERY Emerges(:12)

2. His USE/PURPOSE Emerges(:13-14)

3. His MORALITY Emerges(:15-16)

4—When you/we are Joined to the Lord...

His SPIRIT Emerges(:17-20)

Explanation:(:17-20)

:17—“But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.”

Likewise(:15-16) the one who “joins” himself “to the Lord” joins/changes/melds his own human spirit with that of “the Lord.” As with marriage, the commitment & oneness is undeniably defining in that relationship.

Our relationship with God is pictured in marriage(“joined”) & vice-versa! The church is considered both the body of Christ(1Cor. 12:27; Rom. 7:4; 1Pet. 2:5) as well as the bride of Christ(2Cor. 11:2; Hos. 2:16-20; Isa. 54:5; Jn. 3:29-30).

Jer. 3:14, 15—“Return, O backsliding children,” says the LORD; “for I am married to you. I will take you, one from a city & two from a family, & I will bring you to Zion. And I will give you shepherds according to My heart, who will feed you with knowledge & understanding.”

1Cor. 12:12-14, 27—“For as the body is one & has many members, but all the members of that one body, being many, are one body, so also is Christ. For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free--& have all been made to drink into one Spirit. For in fact the body is not one member but many.”.....“Now you are the body of Christ, & members individually.”

Rom. 7:2-4—“For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband. So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man. Therefore, my brethren, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another--to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.”

2Cor. 11:2—“For I[Paul] am jealous for you with godly jealousy. For I have betrothed you to one husband, that I may present you as a chaste virgin to Christ.”

Hosea 2:16-20—“And it shall be, in that day,” Says the LORD, “That you will call Me ‘My Husband,’ And no longer call Me ‘My Master,’ For I will take from her mouth the names of the Baals, And they shall be remembered by their name no more. In that day I will make a covenant for them With the beasts of the field, With the birds of the air, And with the creeping things of the ground[Rom. 8:19-22]. Bow & sword of battle I will shatter from the earth, To make them lie down safely. I will betroth you to Me forever; Yes, I will betroth you to Me In righteousness & justice, In lovingkindness & mercy; I will betroth you to Me in faithfulness, And you shall know the LORD.”

Isa. 54:5—“For your Maker is your husband, The LORD of hosts is His name; And your Redeemer is the Holy One of Israel; He is called the God of the whole earth.”

Therefore, when we are “joined to” Jesus our “Lord”, then we have a shared spirit with Him so that both He & I/you/we are “one spirit.” That shared “spirit” between Jesus’ & myself/you/us translates to a shared & defining heart/desire for a common goal/thing.

This is pictured in godly marriage that is set apart as holy(holy matrimony). Thus the marital sexual relationship is one part of the entire relationship, yet it is a necessary part, so that without it, the relationship is incomplete. To willingly separate it from the entirety is minimally foolish & maximally dismantling & demolishing. So sexual intimacy should neither be removed from the relationship, nor should it subsume everything else in the relationship—Otherwise, it is not marriage.

Num. 14:21-24—“but truly, as I live, all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD-- “because all these men who have seen My glory & the signs which I did in Egypt & in the wilderness, & have put Me to the test now these ten times, & have not heeded My voice, “they certainly shall not see the land of which I swore to their fathers, nor shall any of those who rejected Me see it. But My servant Caleb, because he has a different spirit in him & has followed Me fully, I will bring into the land where he went, & his descendants shall inherit it.”

Thus to be “one spirit” with anyone other than Christ, is to commit spiritual adultery. In such a case one’s heart is compromised & divided.

“...through the one Spirit, the believer’s spirit has been joined indissolubly with Christ.”—NICNT

RWP—‘“The Spirit” is the use of pneuma as metaphor.”?Pneuma corresponds to Hebrew—xwr. A)quch—Breath, i.e. by implication--Spirit, abstractly or concretely--The animal sentient principle only, which is distinguished from, B) pneuma—The rational & immortal soul, & C)zwh—Mere vitality, even of plants. These terms thus exactly correspond respectively to the Hebrew...A)vpn, B)xwr & C)yx.

:18—“Flee sexual immorality. Every sin that a man does is outside the body, but he who commits sexual immorality sins against his own body.”

As a result of Paul’s previous admonitions that—

1) The unrighteous will not inherit the Kingdom of God(:9-10).

2) Christians are sanctified & justified in Christ(:11).

3) We are to engage in those activities that are helpful to ourselves & others(:12).

4) Our bodies are made with the express purpose of being for the Lord(:13).

5). And IF our bodies are actually dedicated members of Christ Himself(:15), then the Christian is to actively “flee” from sexual immorality as well.

For some examples of “sexual immorality” see :9-10(Cf.-Lev. 18).

...“the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God”... “fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,”...

“Immorality” always involves the Lord to some degree.

Christians must “flee immorality” for all the above reasons.

The greatest problem mankind has--that you & I have--that men & women have...is control of their bodies/flesh.. submitting them to Jesus’ control! The battle with the flesh(Rom. 7:13-25)!

Rom. 7:13-25—“Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful. For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin. For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do. If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good. But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. For I know that in me(that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find. For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practice. Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me. I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good. For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man. But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, & bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members. O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death? I thank God--through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.”

*Those without Christ do not ‘have’ or rather ‘approach’ that struggle...or so it might seem. These may suppose that it is just those who are ‘religious’ that have a ‘problem’ with their flesh/bodies--so that ‘religion’ or ‘God’ appears to be the actual problem—it’s the ‘Communistic ‘opiate of the masses’ syndrome. Rather it is just that they purposely attempt to avoid the real problem by denying that it exists. However, their spiritual problem is indeed real & remains regardless of their admittance of it or not!

“Every sin” does not involve one’s “own body” in the same manner as does “sexual immorality.” “Sexual immorality” corrupts/perverts the use of the perpetrator’s “own body” in a way(s) that other sins do not or can not. Sexual sin is “unique in its character”—MNTC

“...no other sin is directed specifically toward one’s own body in the way that sexual immorality is” Paul’s “concern” “is with the special character of sexual immorality & how that sin is directed especially against the body that is intended to be “for the Lord”(:13, 17). *Unlike other sins, “in fornicating with a prostitute a man removes his body”...“from union with Christ & makes it a member of her body, thereby putting it under her “mastery” rather than under his own under Christ!—NICNT

This truth is due to the ‘one flesh’ reality which describes & seals the marriage covenant & commitment(:15-17; Gen. 2:21-25; Mat. 19:3-6; Mk. 10:2-12; Eph. 5:25-32).

Gen. 2:21-25—“And the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, & he slept; & He took one of his ribs, & closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the LORD God had taken from man He made into a woman, & He brought her to the man. And Adam said: “This is now bone of my bones And flesh of my flesh; She shall be called Woman, Because she was taken out of Man.” Therefore a man shall leave his father & mother & be joined to his wife, & they shall become one flesh. And they were both naked, the man & his wife, & were not ashamed.”

Mat. 19:3-6—“The Pharisees also came to Him, testing Him, & saying to Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife for just any reason?” And He answered & said to them, “Have you not read that He who made them at the beginning ‘made them male & female,’ “& said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father & mother & be joined to his wife, & the two shall become one flesh’? “So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Mk. 10:2-12—“The Pharisees came & asked Him, “Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?” testing Him. And He answered & said to them, “What did Moses command you?” They said, “Moses permitted a man to write a certificate of divorce, & to dismiss her.” And Jesus answered & said to them, “Because of the hardness of your heart he wrote you this precept. But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male & female.’ ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father & mother & be joined to his wife, ‘& the two shall become one flesh’; so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. “Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” In the house His disciples also asked Him again about the same matter. So He said to them, “Whoever divorces his wife & marries another commits adultery against her. “And if a woman divorces her husband & marries another, she commits adultery.”

Eph. 5:25-32—“Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church & gave Himself for her, that He might sanctify & cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy & without blemish. So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes & cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. For we are members of His body, of His flesh & of His bones. For this reason a man shall leave his father & mother & be joined to his wife, & the two shall become one flesh.” This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ & the church.”

The marriage bond between husband & wife is absolutely the most deeply uniting/melding of emotional, mental, physical, & spiritual aspects that anyone can experience with another human being. It decidedly effects the very core of your being.

The marriage bond pictures one’s relationship to God. It is a picture of commitment to one another in Christ—as of being Born Again, & as a New Man—& we are caused to remember the ‘Marriage’ of Christ & Church.

Rev. 19:6-8—“And I heard, as it were, the voice of a great multitude, as the sound of many waters as the sound of mighty thunderings, saying, “Alleluia! For the Lord God Omnipotent reigns! “Let us be glad rejoice give Him glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, His wife has made herself ready.” And to her it was granted to be arrayed in fine linen, clean bright, for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.”

*Sexual sin willingly destroys that unique & intensely deep bond. Thus sexual sin destroys the very body of the one who indulges it, by forcibly ripping & tearing the ‘one flesh’ from & at its core! All this in order to bind to a ‘false god’ on the basis of fleshly indulgence!

Likewise sexual sin destroys the very bond one has to the Lord Himself by forcibly ripping & tearing that ‘one flesh’ relationship from Him & at its core, in an attempt to bind it to another ‘god.’ Sexual sin decimates the one flesh bond of God’s design at all levels.

Our society & thus secular society & culture as a whole misses this completely.

It is therefore not at all surprising that we give condoms to our school kids so they’ll have ‘safe sex’, but refuse them the true parameters for sexual direction in Jesus!

Paul’s argument of course, speaks volumes to the sanctity of marriage in general! It speaks to the absolute necessity of counsel prior to marriage. It speaks to the holiness of marriage. It speaks to the commitment of marriage(Mat. 19:3-12).

Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.” They said to Him, “Why then did Moses command to give a certificate of divorce, & to put her away?” He said to them, “Moses, because of the hardness of your hearts, permitted you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. “And I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, & marries another, commits adultery; & whoever marries her who is divorced commits adultery.” His disciples said to Him, “If such is the case of the man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” But He said to them, “All cannot accept this saying, but only those to whom it has been given: “For there are eunuchs who were born thus from their mother’s womb, & there are eunuchs who were made eunuchs by men, & there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the kingdom of heaven’s sake. He who is able to accept it, let him accept it.”[akin to “He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says...”]
