Summary: The need to be baptized in the Holy Ghost

FILLED

I. FILLED WITH

A. There are many things you can be filled with.

Genesis 6:11 The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled

with violence.

Exodus 16:12 I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.

Exodus 28:3 And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.

Proverbs 1:31 Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled

with their own devices.

Proverbs 12:21 There shall no evil happen to the just: but the wicked shall be filled

with mischief.

Proverbs 30:22 For a servant when he reigneth; and a fool when he is filled with

meat;

Isaiah 21:3 Therefore are my loins filled with pain: pangs have taken hold upon me,

as the pangs of a woman that travaileth: I was bowed down at the hearing of

it; I was dismayed at the seeing of it.

Jeremiah 51:5 For Israel hath not been forsaken, nor Judah of his God, of the LORD of hosts; though their land was filled with sin against the Holy One of Israel.

Ezekiel 23:33 Thou shalt be filled with drunkenness and sorrow, with the cup of

astonishment and desolation, with the cup of thy sister Samaria.

Luke 4:28 And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were

filled with wrath,

Luke 5:26 And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled

with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.

Luke 6:11 And they were filled with madness; and communed one with another what they might do to Jesus.

Acts 13:45 But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy,

and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming.

B. People who were filled with the Holy Ghost

Luke 1:15 For he shall be great in the sight of the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink; and he shall be filled with the Holy Ghost, even from his mother’s womb.

It is God’s prerogative to make “great.” When he does it, the man is very humble, but when man attempts it, he is very conceited. Dake.

Luke 1:41 And it came to pass, that, when Elisabeth heard the salutation of Mary, the babe leaped in her womb; and Elisabeth was filled with the Holy Ghost:

Luke 1:67 And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and

prophesied, saying,

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.

Acts 4:8 Then Peter, filled with the Holy Ghost, said unto them, Ye rulers of

the people, and elders of Israel,

Acts 4:31 And when they had prayed, the place was shaken where they were assembled together; and they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and they spake the word of God with boldness.

Acts 9:17 And Ananias went his way, and entered into the house; and putting

his hands on him said, Brother Saul, the Lord, even Jesus, that appeared unto thee in the way as thou camest, hath sent me, that thou mightest receive thy sight, and be filled with the Holy Ghost. [Before water baptism.]

Acts 10:44 While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them

which heard the word. [Before water baptism.]

Tongues followed filling by Holy Ghost.

Acts 10:46 For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then

answered Peter,

Acts 13:52 And the disciples were filled with joy, and with the Holy Ghost.

Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled

with the Spirit;

This is the privilege of every Christian. It is true that every born-again man receives the Spirit of sonship and has the Holy Spirit in a measure (Romans 8:9, 14-16), but this is not the kind of filling one may yet receive if he will accept truth and seek God for the fullness of the Spirit. Finis Dake

Scriptures that refer to an amount of the Spirit:

John 3:34 For he whom God hath sent speaketh the words of God: for God

giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him.

Jesus was not limited.

II Kings 2:9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.

II. YOU MAY BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST

A. It is a Promise. God cannot lie.

Pr 1:23 1:23 Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you,

I will make known my words unto you.

Joel 2:28-29

(v. 28) And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh; and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see visions:

(v. 29) And also upon the servants and upon the handmaids in those days will I pour out my spirit.

Luke 24:49 And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry

ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

John 7:38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly

shall flow rivers of living water.

Acts 2:33 Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this,

which ye now see and hear.

B. It is a Gift.

Luke 11:13 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask

him?

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

Acts 10:45 And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as

many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.

III. IT IS YOUR DUTY TO BE FILLED WITH THE HOLY GHOST

A. It is your duty because you have a promise of it.

The Christian Church cannot rise to its true stature in accomplishing the purposes of

God when its members operate largely through the gifts of nature, neglecting the true

gifts and graces of the Spirit of God. A.W. Tozer pg. 33

B. Because God has commanded it.

1. "Be filled" is not a tentative suggestion, a mild recommendation, a polite piece of advice. It is a command which comes to us from Christ with all authority of one of his chosen apostles. We have no more liberty to escape this duty than we have the ethical duties which surround the text, e.g. to speak the truth, to do honest work, to be kind and forgiving to one another, or to live lives of purity and love. The fullness of the Holy Ghost is not optional for the Christian, but obligatory.

2. The Prohibition and the Command

Ephesians 5:18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled

with the Spirit;

We are none of us to get drunk; we are all of us to be Spirit-filled. Like the command to sobriety and self-control, the command to seek the Spirit's fullness is addressed without exception to all the people of God.

C. It is essential to your own growth in grace that you should be filled with the Spirit.

IV. HAVE YE RECEIVED THE HOLY GHOST

Read Acts 19:1 -7

V. HE SHALL BAPTIZE YOU

Define Baptize:

907 baptizo {bap-tid'-zo} from a derivative of 911; TDNT - 1:529,92; verb

AV - baptize (76), wash 2, baptist 1, baptized + 2258 1; 80

1) to dip repeatedly, to immerse, to submerge (of vessels sunk)

2) to cleanse by dipping or submerging, to wash, to make clean with water, to wash one's self, bathe

3) to overwhelm

++++

Not to be confused with 911, bapto. The clearest example that shows the meaning of baptizo is a text from the Greek poet and physician Nicander, who lived about 200 B.C. It is a recipe for making pickles and is helpful because it uses both words. Nicander says that in order to make a pickle, the vegetable should first be 'dipped' (bapto) into boiling water and then 'baptised' (baptizo) in the

vinegar solution. Both verbs concern the immersing of vegetables in a solution. But the first is temporary. The second, the act of baptising the vegetable, produces a permanent change.

When used in the New Testament, this word more often refers to our union and identification with Christ than to our water baptism. e.g. Mark 16:16. 'He that believes and is baptised shall be saved'.

Christ is saying that mere intellectual assent is not enough. There must be a union with him, a real change, like the vegetable to the pickle!

Bible Study Magazine, James Montgomery Boice, May 1989.

Mt. 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:

Mark 1:8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with

the Holy Ghost.

Luke 3:16 John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:

VI. THE TRINITY WORKING TOGETHER

A. The Son - I will come to you

John 14:18 I will not leave you comfortless: I will come to you.

B. The Father and the Son - We will come

John 14:23 Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and

make our abode with him.

C. The Holy Ghost --When he is come John 16: 7-8

(v. 7) Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

(v. 8) And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

VII. YE SHALL BE BAPTIZED IN THE HOLY GHOST

A. Acts 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

B. Isa. 44:3 -4

(v. 3) For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:

(v. 4) And they shall spring up as among the grass, as willows by the water courses.

C. Plainly I can say that some folks who carry their big Bibles to impress others will never

be filled with the Holy Spirit until they drop their sleek, smooth exterior of being

"well taught" and earnestly desire God's humble plan for their lives.

After the desire must come a determination to go through with God on His terms--and

even then, they will not be filled and owned and controlled by the Spirit of God until

in desperation they throw themselves into the arms of God!

In the desire of our faith, we have to close our eyes and make a leap into the arms of

Jesus! After all the help, after all the instructions, after all the study, after all the

Bible verses you can remember have not done the work, after every trick and everything you know to move toward God have failed, your heart in desperation cries, "Fill me now! Oh, fill me now!" A. W. Tozer pg 44
