TURNING RELIGIOUS RELUCTANCE-VII—John 4:1-26+

Turning the Religious Lost

The Church exists to turn the world away from it’s errant way!

Everybody lives by a ‘religion’—a set of spiritual & secular values that they hold to. These may be right or wrong.

Everybody has a belief system to which they subscribe—right or wrong.

Even atheists have a religion & are religious people.

These may be ‘reluctant’ to turn, But by the power of God, they are turnable nonetheless!

*We are all called to serve God in spirit & in truth, AND to...“Go therefore & make disciples of ALL the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father & of the Son & of the Holy Spirit, teaching THEM to observe all things that I have commanded you; & lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”!(Matthew 28:19-20)...

God’s people(the Church) are to actively reach, invite, & urge(without the confines of fleshly prejudice) others, to become disciples of Jesus.

Thru the symbolism of baptism, God’s people are to publicly declare a person’s belief & allegiance to the body of Christ in the name of the Trinitarian God(Father, Son, & Holy Spirit).

God’s people are to continually teach themselves & others all that God has done, is doing, & will do thru Christ.

God’s people are to encourage each other thru Christ’s eternal presence.

Jesus divulged/bore witness of/ His Messianic identity to a reluctant/hesitant but religious woman.

God’s people bear witness of Messiah’s/Jesus’ identity to reluctant religious people.

How/When will God’s people turn the reluctancy of the religious?

OR--What does it take to turn that religious reluctancy around?

Some insights toward turning religious reluctance to God.

LIFESTYLE Insight(:15-18)

Explanation:(:15-18)

:15—“The woman said to Him, “Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw.”

The woman saw that she needed the “water” which Jesus offered her. If she would accept it, she would never “thirst” again. She would never have to make the trek or expend the energy to seek out “water” ever again.

‘Indoor plumbing’ would be a blessing to those who have to plan their lives around the collection of water. Jesus’ ‘water’ is indeed indoor plumbing...indoor spiritual plumbing!

In Jesus’ day the Romans had made personal indoor plumbing a possibility but only for the very affluent Roman citizens. Israel was not Roman but they were occupied by the Romans. Springs were known, aqueducts were known, fountains were known, plumbing was known but only rarely had.

Jesus’ promise(:14-15) is minimally intriguing & yet entirely realistic & practical. The fact that she had to “come here to draw” was distasteful because it required effort/work. Her mind still seems to be locked in on the physical need for “water” & the work surrounding it’s acquisition. Thus she demands that Jesus “give” her “this water” of which He speaks(:14)...

Yet at the same time, she is making her demand in direct(?) response to Jesus’ statement that ‘His water’ would “become in her a fountain of water springing up into everlasting life”(:14).

She grasps the significance of the labor expended in order to obtain physical “water”, however she does not grasp the spiritual application that Jesus has portrayed/painted/pictured surrounding “water.”

:16—“Jesus said to her, “Go, call your husband, & come here.”

Given the woman’s inability to get beyond Jesus’ picture of living water(:10), He then begins to interject a personal knowledge of her personal history & situation. This knowledge is revealed fully in :17-18.

Jesus engages her in what He already knows as fact. He does this without breaking stride in presenting the truth, which she desperately needs.

He is offering her an opportunity to respond to her moral failure. He gives her an opportunity to be honest about her own life’s failings. *He does not try to destroy her so He can gloat over her being caught up in sin versus Him not! Instead He works/attempts to destroy her pride so that she can receive the truth.

*The adage is true, I must get a person ‘lost’(admit personal sin) before I can get them ‘saved’(admit salvation in Christ alone).

In our sharing Christ with others, you & I may not have much personal information readily available to us. We generally approach people thru some minimal aspect of contact[thru a church function, cold knocking on doors, etc.], & thus we reach out to them largely in ignorance.

However, thru increased relationship with further & deeper conversations, we continuously pick up on hints of moral failure. *We can recognize the counterfeit by regularly handling the genuine. The Holy Spirit brings these things to mind & compels us as to the if, when, & how of our response to them.

Lk. 12:11, 12—“Now when they bring you to the synagogues & magistrates & authorities, do not worry about how or what you should answer, or what you should say. For the Holy Spirit will teach you in that very hour what you ought to say.”

If it was that way for the disciples who would later become apostles, then it is instructive for those of us who give ourselves to the voice & direction of the Holy Spirit as well.. “Go”—upagw—Present Active Indicative—1) To lead under, bring under; 2) To withdraw one's self, to go away, depart. Strong—To lead(oneself) under, i.e. Withdraw or retire(as if sinking out of sight), literally or figuratively.

Strong—To emit a sound(animal, human or instrumental); by implication--To address in words or by name, also in imitation.

“Husband”(See :17, 18)—anhr—Noun Masc.—1) with reference to sex—1a) Of a male, 1b) Of a husband, 1c) Of a betrothed or future husband; 2) With reference to age, & to distinguish an adult man from a boy; 3) Any male; 4) Used generically of a group of both men & women. Strong—A man(properly as an individual male).

:17—“The woman answered & said, “I have no husband.” Jesus said to her, “You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’

The woman is frank with Jesus, telling Him that she has “no husband” at all. She has no one who is committed to her nor to whom she has committed herself other than for practical purposes(support) alone.

*What a temptation & sad state of affairs it is(then & now) for a single woman to give herself physically to a man in order to receive some semblance of security!

That she responds in the way she does lets Jesus know that she is indeed being honest with herself & also with Him. She is baring her soul.

This is important whenever we share Christ with others. We are never to broadcast the Good News solely in order to ‘get it over with.’ We share because we have a real concern for the person’s spiritual well-being. We share by the Spirit & not by the imposition of men!

Mat. 7:1-6—“Judge not, that you be not judged. For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; & with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you. And why do you look at the speck in your brother’s eye, but do not consider the plank in your own eye? Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye’; & look, a plank is in your own eye? “Hypocrite! First remove the plank from your own eye, & then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye. “Do not give what is holy to the dogs; nor cast your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, & turn & tear you in pieces.”

Prov. 26:10-11—“The great God who formed everything Gives the fool his hire & the transgressor his wages. As a dog returns to his own vomit, So a fool repeats his folly.”

We will run into ‘dogs’ & ‘fools’, but we will also encounter those whom God will save by grace thru faith in Christ!

We are only justified as servants of God when we are listeners, caring for the person we engage in conversation.

Rather than having stated a ‘faux-pas-like’ supposition, Jesus lets her know that he is indeed well aware that she “has no husband.” This is fleshed out in :18.

.“Woman”(See :7, 9, 11, 15, 19, 21, 25)—gunh—Noun Fem.—1) A woman of any age, whether a virgin, or married, or a widow; 2) a wife—2a) Of a betrothed woman. Strong—A woman; specially--A wife.

“Have”3X(See :11, 18)—ecw or scew—Verb—1) To have, i.e. To hold—1a) To have(hold) in the hand, in the sense of wearing, to have(hold) possession of the mind (refers to alarm, agitating emotions, etc.), to hold fast keep, to have or comprise or involve, to regard or consider or hold as; 2) To have i.e. Own, possess—2a) External things such as pertain to property or riches or furniture or utensils or goods or food etc., 2b) Used of those joined to any one by the bonds of natural blood or marriage or friendship or duty or law etc, of attendance or companionship; 3) To hold one's self or find one's self so & so, to be in such or such a condition; 4) To hold one's self to a thing, to lay hold of a thing, to adhere or cling to—4a) To be closely joined to a person or a thing. Strong—including an alternate form scew; (used in certain tenses only); a primary verb; To hold(used in very various applications, literally or figuratively, direct or remote; such as possessions; ability, continuity, relation, or condition).

“No”2X—ou, ouk, or ouc—Particle—1) No, not; in direct questions expecting an affirmative answer. Strong—a primary word; the absolute negative [compare mh] adverb; No or not.

“Husband”2X(See :16, 18)—anhr—Noun Masc.—1) with reference to sex—1a) Of a male, 1b) Of a husband, 1c) Of a betrothed or future husband; 2) With reference to age, & to distinguish an adult man from a boy; 3) Any male; 4) Used generically of a group of both men & women. Strong—A man(properly as an individual male).

“Said”3X“Said”(See :10, 11, 12, 13)—epw—Verb—1) To speak, say. Strong—a primary verb(used only in the definite past tense, the others being borrowed from erew, rew, & fhmi); To speak or say(by word or writing).?Epw & fhmi generally refer to an individual expression or speech respectively; whereas Lalew means an extended or random harangue; while legw means to relate, in words[usually of systematic or set discourse; while rew is properly, to break silence merely].

“Well”—kalwv—Adverb—1)Beautifully, finely, excellently, well.—1a) Rightly, so that there shall be no room for blame, well, truly, 1b) Excellently, nobly, commendably, 1c) Honorably, in honor—1c1) In a good place, comfortable, 1d) To speak well of one, to do good, 1e) To be well (of those recovering health). Strong—Well(usually morally).

:18—““for you have had five husbands, & the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly.””

Jesus continues in voicing His knowledge that she has no husband(:17) to inform her that she has indeed “has had five husbands.”

His knowledge of her extends even farther, in that He lets her know that she is currently ‘living with’ a man in a non-committal relationship, who is not even her “husband.” These truths about her failed relationships had to have been painful for the woman to admit & face.

Jesus thus encourages her in speaking truthfully regarding her having no husband(:17). He is urging her to admit her sin. She is faced with her amoral lifestyle. Jesus does not use the knowledge as a blunt trauma weapon but rather commends her for her personally pained/difficult admission(“in that you spoke truly”).

Thru this statement Jesus has gained her ear, in that she sees that He is definitely not your everyday Jewish forth-teller(:19).

“For”—gar—Conjunction—1) For. Strong—a primary particle; properly--Assigning a reason(used in argument, explanation or intensification; often with other particles).

“Had”2X(See :17, 32)—ecw or scew—Verb—1) To have, i.e.

“Five”—pente—Noun Indeclinable—1) Five. Strong—a primary number; “Five”.

Argumentation:

Deut. 5:5-6:9—“I stood between the LORD & you at that time, to declare to you the word of the LORD; for you were afraid because of the fire, & you did not go up the mountain. He said: ‘I am the LORD your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before Me. ‘You shall not make for yourself a carved image--any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third & fourth generations of those who hate Me, but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me & keep My commandments. You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not hold him guiltless who takes His name in vain. Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor & do all your work, but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your ox, nor your donkey, nor any of your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates, that your male servant & your female servant may rest as well as you. And remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, & the LORD your God brought you out from there by a mighty hand & by an outstretched arm; therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. Honor your father & your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be long, & that it may be well with you in the land which the LORD your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor’s wife; & you shall not desire your neighbor’s house, his field, his male servant, his female servant, his ox, his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s.’ “These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly, in the mountain from the midst of the fire, the cloud, & the thick darkness, with a loud voice; & He added no more. And He wrote them on two tablets of stone & gave them to me. So it was, when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, that you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes & your elders. And you said: ‘Surely the LORD our God has shown us His glory & His greatness, & we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire. We have seen this day that God speaks with man; yet he still lives. Now therefore, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God anymore, then we shall die. For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, & lived? You go near & hear all that the LORD our God may say, & tell us all that the LORD our God says to you, & we will hear & do it.’ “Then the LORD heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, & the LORD said to me: ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They are right in all that they have spoken. Oh, that they had such a heart in them that they would fear Me & always keep all My commandments, that it might be well with them & with their children forever! Go & say to them, “Return to your tents.” ‘But as for you, stand here by Me, & I will speak to you all the commandments, the statutes, & the judgments which you shall teach them, that they may observe them in the land which I am giving them to possess.’ “Therefore you shall be careful to do as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right hand or to the left. You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live & that it may be well with you, & that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess. “Now this is the commandment, & these are the statutes & judgments which the LORD your God has commanded to teach you, that you may observe them in the land which you are crossing over to possess, that you may fear the LORD your God, to keep all His statutes & His commandments which I command you, you & your son & your grandson, all the days of your life, & that your days may be prolonged. Therefore hear, O Israel, & be careful to observe it, that it may be well with you, & that you may multiply greatly as the LORD God of your fathers has promised you--‘a land flowing with milk & honey.’ “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one! You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, & with all your strength. And these words which I command you today shall be in your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your children, & shall talk of them when you sit in your house, when you walk by the way, when you lie down, & when you rise up. You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, & they shall be as frontlets between your eyes. You shall write them on the doorposts of your house & on your gates.”

Reminders of behavior are good but not enough!...One must have a relationship with God or you become a sentimental & even callous unfeeling declarer of God’s word with no appeal to love. You become a dutiful yet heartless servant. You must “love the Lord your God”... And love Him “with all your soul, & with all your strength!” Otherwise you become a person who declares Christ by rote & thru pretense only(Php. 1:15-18), with selfish personal attention at the forefront.

Php. 1:15-18—“Some indeed preach Christ even from envy & strife, & some also from good will: The former preach Christ from selfish ambition, not sincerely, supposing to add affliction to my chains; but the latter out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel. What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is preached; & in this I rejoice, yes, & will rejoice.”

Heb. 13:4-6—“Marriage is honorable among all, & the bed undefiled; but fornicators & adulterers God will judge. Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” So we may boldly say: “The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?”

Eph. 2:1-10—“And you He made alive, who were dead in trespasses & sins, in which you once walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, among whom also we all once conducted ourselves in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh & of the mind, & were by nature children of wrath, just as the others. But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), & raised us up together, & made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, & that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.”

Eph. 4:1-3—“I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called, with all lowliness & gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

Eph. 4:17-24, 4:30--5:4—“This I say, therefore, & testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind, having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God, because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart; who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness. But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him & have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, & be renewed in the spirit of your mind, & that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness & holiness.”.....“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, & evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, just as God in Christ forgave you. Therefore be imitators of God as dear children. And walk in love, as Christ also has loved us & given Himself for us, an offering & a sacrifice to God for a sweet-smelling aroma. But fornication & all uncleanness or covetousness, let it not even be named among you, as is fitting for saints; neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.”
