Text: Luke 10:25 On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
Luke 10:26 “What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?"
Luke 10:27 He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind' ; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'"
Luke 10:28 “You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."
Luke 10:29 But he wanted to justify himself, so he asked Jesus, "And who is my neighbor?"
Luke 10:30 In reply Jesus said: "A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, when he fell into the hands of robbers. They stripped him of his clothes, beat him and went away, leaving him half dead.
Luke 10:31 A priest happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side.
Luke 10:32 So too, a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.
Luke 10:33 But a Samaritan, as he traveled, came where the man was; and when he saw him, he took pity on him.
Luke 10:34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he put the man on his own donkey, took him to an inn and took care of him.
Luke 10:35 The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper. 'Look after him,' he said, 'and when I return, I will reimburse you for any extra expense you may have.'
Luke 10:36 “Which of these three do you think was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of robbers?"
Luke 10:37 The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise."
Intro: A. The Lawyer and his question
It was a good question
The Lord’s challenging answer (v.27)
The lawyer seeks an escape (v.29)
B. The usual interpretation of this parable
To teach responsibility to our neighbors
To show who our neighbors are
C. Here is another application of the parable
Let the certain man represent any sinner
Traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho
Jerusalem a city of Peace
Jericho a city of curse
The road from Jerusalem to Jericho is downhill Jericho is 750 feet below sea level
When we begin to walk the road of sin it’s always downward
There are many perils on the sinful path
B. He fell among thieves
Satan is a thief
John 10:10 The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
2)The thief in the garden of Eden is still here
today
C. The thieves left him stripped and half dead
Stripped of righteousness and self esteem
Half dead / any time you start on the sinful
Road you begin to spiritually die
Eph 2:1 As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins,
Eph 2:2 in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.
Eph 2:3 All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath.
Eph 2:4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy,
Eph 2:5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions--it is by grace you have been saved.
2. Let’s let the priest and Levite represent the
Religious solution to the sinner’s problem
Let’s let the priest represent the religious
Church’s attitude
Just walk on by and point a finger
You made your bed now lay in it
You should be like me and not mess
Up
we don’t want that kind here
I’m glad that I’m not like this low
Life dog
This attitude will really lead sinners to God
Let the Levite represent the church leadership
I can tell you the way you should have come
I can show you what to do the next
Time
give me a break go suffer somewhere
else
you are messing up my day
I don’t have time for you
Have you paid your tithes?
What’s in it for me if I help you
Hurting people need real help not empty words
3. Let the Good Samaritan represent the Savior
the Samaritan was a rejected person
the Jews hated Samaritans
mixed people
2)Jesus was rejected
Isa 53:3 He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
Jesus (like the good Samaritan)
Went where the hurting was, He
Didn’t walk on by
1)Jesus seeks out the hurting
Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man came to seek and to save what was lost."
He found me when I was Hurting
He had compassion on him
He bound up his wounds
He poured wine in the wounds
1)to disinfect the wound
Jesus does the same when
He saves us
He poured oil in
Oil is the symbol of the Spirit
the injured man’s bill was paid in
full
Jesus paid Sin’s debt in full
