Text Summary: In his narrative of Jesus’ teaching and the exorcism in the synagogue in Capernaum, Mark demonstrates that Jesus is the Son of God, and, as such, that He alone possesses the

authority of God the Father.

INTERPRETATION:

Jesus’ authority is demonstrated:

1) In His teaching (vv. 21-22)

a) By His manner of teaching (Mk. 1:22)

b) Because His teaching was from the Father (Jn. 7:16)

c) Because He practiced what He taught (Matt. 15:1-9)

2) In His authority over the demons (vv. 23-26)

a) The demons revealed Jesus’ true identity (v. 24)

b) The demons recognized Jesus had power over them (v. 24)

c) The demons obeyed Jesus’ command (vv.25-26)

NOTE: Twice, in verse 22 and again in verse 27, the people in the synagogue are AMAZED at Jesus’ authority, and as a result DECLARED HIS AUTHORITY.

APPLICATION:

As a result of Christ’s authority from the Father we should:

1) Believe in Him (Jn. 17:1-3)

2) Listen to Him (Mk. 9:7)

3) Share His good news (Mk. 1:28)
