BY HIS STRIPES-IV—Isaiah 52:13—53:1-12

OR: God’s Remedy For Sin

Attention:

To Brendan Johnston, it was a simple choice. The 18-year-old senior wrestler from The Classical Academy in Colorado had never competed against a girl, & faced with the option to do so & potentially move one round closer to his goal of winning a state title, he instead decided to forfeit.

For one of the two would-be female opponents, Johnston refused to face in the Colorado state wrestling championships last weekend, it was a frustrating outcome. She said she understood & respected his decision but questioned why any wrestler, of any gender, would decide to forfeit in the state tournament after making it so far. Johnston cited personal & religious beliefs for not wanting to wrestle a girl.

Jaslynn Gallegos, a senior at Skyview High staid, “My whole thing is that I’m not a girl wrestler; I’m just a wrestler. So it kind of doesn’t hurt my feelings, but I do kind of take it to heart.”

Johnston, who identifies as Christian & said he attends the International Anglican Church in Colorado Springs, said, “There is something that I really do find problematic about the idea of wrestling with a girl, & a part of that does come from my faith & my belief. And a part of that does come from how I was raised to treat women, as well as maybe from different experiences & things.”

Johnston, who has never wrestled a girl since he picked up the sport in seventh grade, has said that the physical aggression required in wrestling isn’t something he’s comfortable showing toward a girl, on or off the mat. He declined to wrestle Gallegos in the first round of the state tournament in the Class 3A 106-pound bracket. He then decided to forfeit against Angel Rios, a junior at Valley High, in the third round of consolations, effectively ending his high school wrestling career & an eventual shot at a college scholarship.

Rios went on to place fourth at the tournament. Gallegos placed fifth after Johnston’s early-round forfeit. It was the first time a girl had placed at a Colorado state wrestling tournament. Girls’ wrestling is not a sanctioned sport in the state, so girls have the right to participate alongside boys at the state tournament. There is a pilot program that allows for a female state wrestling bracket, but Rios & Gallegos decided they wanted to compete against boys.

It is a ‘seeming’ paradox that a person who has such impressive wrestling skills as Brendan Johnston & is capable of securing a scholarship, would choose to forgo that privilege.

Need:

It is a ‘seeming’ paradox that the Son of man who willingly gave Himself over to a criminal’s death on a tortuous Cross, was actually also the Son of God who willingly & of necessity, offered the only possible sacrificial payment for every man’s sin.

Background:

~700 years prior to the Cross of Christ Jesus, Isaiah prophesied of the substitutionary atonement which would one day come thru God’s “Servant”(52:13a). Isaiah records details of the coming Servant’s willing sacrifice for the sake of all sinners.

The prophet Isaiah declared a future time when God’s unique Servant would provide the remedy for sin.

Jesus is God’s remedy for sin.

Why/How/When is Jesus God’s remedy for sin?

Today, we will continue to look at Our reception of Jesus as God’s remedy for personal sin.

‘RECEIVE’—More than mental acceptance, which only makes possibilities plausible. ‘Receiving’ has to do with acceptance by the heart, so that what is received, is taken to the point of actual reliance upon what or Who is received.

DISARMING PERPLEXITY(52:14--53:1a)

Explanation:(52:14-15--53:1a)Shock/Dismay/Unsettling/Disconcerting

52:14—“Just as many were astonished at you, So His visage was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men;”

‘PERPLEXITY”—Something complicated or baffling. How can this Man be the Savior & Lord when He so plainly suffers?

Jesus presents a ‘Disarming Perplexity’ because individuals & groups of people in their evaluation of religion, have limiting ideas of what they 'suppose' things should be.

“Just as many were astonished at you,”

“Having stated the supreme exaltation of the Servant”(52:13) “the prophet now introduces a contrast, addressing the Servant himself...”—Edward J. Young--‘The Book Of Isaiah’[EJYI]

This One who will be very highly exalted & extolled(52:13), will also be the One whom people will be “astonished” at.

“Just as”—rva ash-er'—a primitive relative pronoun(of every gender & number)—1) relative particle--1a) Which, who, 1b) That which; 2) conjunction--2a) That(in objective clause), 2b) When, 2c) Since, 2d) As, 2e) Conditional if. Strong—a primitive relative pronoun(of every gender & number); Who, which, what, that; also (as an adverb & a conjunction)--When, where, how, because, in order that, etc..

“Many”(See 52:15; 53:11, 12)—br rab—Adj.—1) Much, many, great—1a) Much, 1b) Many, 1c) Abounding in, 1d) More numerous than, 1e) Abundant, enough, 1f) Great, 1g) Strong, 1h) Greater than. Adverb—1i) Much, exceedingly. Noun Masc.—2) Captain, chief. Strong—Abundant(in quantity, size, age, number, rank, quality).?Contracted from—bbr raw-bab'—a primitive root; properly--To cast together, i.e. Increase, especially in number; also(as denominative from hbbr[abundance/a myriad])--To multiply by the myriad.

“Astonished/Astonied/Appalled”—Mmv shaw-mam’—Qal Perfect—1) To be desolate, be appalled, stun, stupefy—1a) (Qal)--1a1) To be desolated, be deflowered, be deserted, be appalled, 1a2) To be appalled, be awestruck. Strong—a primitive root; to stun(or intransitively, grow numb), i.e. Devastate or figuratively--Stupefy(both usually in a passive sense).

“So His visage was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men;”

“it is not being said that this person is more disfigured than any other person, but that he is so disfigured as to appear hardly human.”—NICOT(John Oswalt)[NICOTJO]/EJYI

Astonished/“ “appalled” finds its justification” in that “the sight disclosed is of such exquisite”[extreme & perfect beauty] “suffering that the Servant’s bodily appearance seemed hardly human.” His physical torment was so great as to literally disfigure Him. And added to that, “the deep inner experiences of anguish demonstrate their presence by the effects on the face & form of the sufferer.”—EBC

In that He “was marred more than any man, And His form more than the sons of men” ‘may’ also ‘imply’ that this coming Servant’s uniqueness is in His divinity—His being God’s Son as well as a Son of man.

*This verse is describing the suffering—agony, distress, torture, trauma—at men’s hands, that our Lord Jesus would undergo. He was mocked, beaten, pummeled with fists, slapped, scourged(whipped), spit upon, crucified—spikes driven thru His hands & feet, He upon the Cross was hoisted into the air & it was dropped into the hole that would hold it upright—& finally judged by His Father as the embodiment of sin itself(2Cor. 5:21).

2Cor. 5:20-21—“Now then, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were pleading through us: we implore you on Christ’s behalf, be reconciled to God. For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.”

?Will you believe & accept that Isaiah’s “marred” Servant(Christ Jesus) can be the Divine Savior & Lord for eternity?

52:15—“So shall He sprinkle many nations. Kings shall shut their mouths at Him; For what had not been told them they shall see, And what they had not heard they shall consider.”

“So shall He sprinkle many nations.”

“The word “sprinkle” has priestly-sacrificial overtones.”—EBC

The Hebrew behind the word “sprinkle” can also be translated “startle”, which would refer to :14’s astonishment. Thus they will be startled when their spiritual end is actually determined thru the marred Servant.

Due to the international reach of His extreme exaltation, & thru the astonishment(52:14a) among the many nations, the Servant will thus “sprinkle many nations.”

Thru the willing(by Jesus) yet forced/coerced(by the officials & people) sacrifice of the Servant’s life, His own divine blood would be shed to cover the sin & sins of “many”(53:10a-b; :11b-c). No “nation” would be exempt from the cleansing sacrifice of Himself which He offers them. The “sprinkling” He brings will be that which is essential for personal spiritual cleansing.

“So”(See :14)—Nk kane—Adverb—1) So, therefore, thus—1a) Thus, so, 1b) Just so, 1c) Therefore, 1d) So...as(paired with adv), 1e) Then, 1f) Forasmuch as(in phrase), 1g) (with prep)—1g1) Therefore, this being so(specific), 1g2) Hitherto, 1g3) Therefore, on this ground(general), 1g4) Afterwards, 1g5) In such case. “Kings shall shut their mouths at Him”

“Kings” are those who rule their people with intelligence & wisdom.

Thus “closing the mouth signifies speechless astonishment” “a sign of awe & honor.”—EJYI. And it will be an admission of personal weakness on the part of the seemingly authoritative kings.

Thus Christ Jesus, God’s Servant is King of Kings...

Rev. 19:11-16—“Now I saw heaven opened, & behold, a white horse. And He who sat on him was called Faithful & True, & in righteousness He judges & makes war. His eyes were like a flame of fire, & on His head were many crowns. He had a name written that no one knew except Himself. He was clothed with a robe dipped in blood, & His name is called The Word of God. And the armies in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white & clean, followed Him on white horses. Now out of His mouth goes a sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness & wrath of Almighty God. And He has on His robe & on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF LORDS.”

Mat. 10:17-20—[Jesus warns His disciples of the reach & danger of their witness]—“But beware of men, for they will deliver you up to councils & scourge you in their synagogues. You will be brought before governors & kings for My sake, as a testimony to them & to the Gentiles. But when they deliver you up, do not worry about how or what you should speak. For it will be given to you in that hour what you should speak; “for it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father who speaks in you.”

?But Why shall they “shut their mouths at Him”?...

“Kings”—Klm meh’-lek—Noun Masc.—1) King. Strong— A king.?From—Klm maw-lak’—a primitive root; To reign; inceptively--To ascend the throne; causatively--To induct into royalty; hence by implication--To take counsel.

“Mouths”(See 53:7, 9)—hp peh—Noun Masc.—1) Mouth—1a) Mouth(of man), 1b) Mouth(as organ of speech), 1c) Mouth(of animals), 1d) Mouth, opening, orifice(of a well, river, etc.), 1e) Extremity, end.?Myp pim—2) A weight equal to one third of a shekel, occurs only in 1Sa 13:21. Strong—The mouth(as the means of blowing), whether literal or figurative(particularly speech); specifically--Edge, portion or side; adverbially(with preposition)--According to.?From—hap paw-aw'—a primitive root; To puff, i.e. Blow away.

...“For what had not been told them they shall see, And what they had not heard they shall consider.”

These kings will be actual witnesses to the physical suffering & the resurrected reality of Jesus. They shall be party to the unique considerations brought to them by Jesus’ resurrection.

Isa. 64:4—“For since the beginning of the world Men have not heard nor perceived by the ear, Nor has the eye seen any God besides You, Who acts for the one who waits for Him.”

Habakkuk 1:5—“Look among the nations & watch-- Be utterly astounded! For I will work a work in your days Which you would not believe, though it were told you.”

For the synagogue in Pisidian Antioch—Paul claimed Habakkuk’s message for the Christian era!—

Acts 13:40-41—““Beware therefore, lest what has been spoken in the prophets come upon you: “Behold, you despisers, Marvel & perish! For I work a work in your days, A work which you will by no means believe, Though one were to declare it to you.’””

Jesus does not easily fit into the ‘natural’ thinking process. Because the prospect of the Servant’s purpose assaults the ‘natural’ mind. This Servant immediately calls attention to the fact that a person is a ‘rank-&-file’ sinner before God. It calls attention to their very personal & fatal flaw.

Such a presentation is highly offensive to most ‘good people’, who have never even entertained the thought that their ‘good’ may be viewed as evil. Because they measure themselves by deeds/works/actions. These work hard to provide the best for their families. These nurture their children & grandchildren thruout their lives, etc. These put in the hours at work. But all their supposed ‘good’ lies outside the compulsion of God’s Spirit Himself!

Do you consider yourself a ‘good’ person? Are you justified in that opinion by God?

1Cor. 2:7-12—“But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God ordained before the ages for our glory, which none of the rulers of this age knew; for had they known, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory. But as it is written: “Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, Nor have entered into the heart of man The things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might know the things that have been freely given to us by God.”

Eph. 3:8-21—“To me, who am less than the least of all the saints, this grace was given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ, & to make all see what is the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the ages has been hidden in God who created all things through Jesus Christ; to the intent that now the manifold wisdom of God might be made known by the church to the principalities & powers in the heavenly places, according to the eternal purpose which He accomplished in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness & access with confidence through faith in Him. Therefore I ask that you do not lose heart at my tribulations for you, which is your glory. For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven & earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted & grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width & length & depth & height-- to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever & ever. Amen.”

1Tim. 3:16—“And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, Justified in the Spirit, Seen by angels, Preached among the Gentiles, Believed on in the world, Received up in glory.”

53:1—“Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?”

53:1a—“Who has believed our report?”

This question is actually a declaration of the meager number of believers of God’s design...among the Jewish audience, as well as among the Gentile...

Jn. 1:1-13—““In the beginning was the Word, & the Word was with God, & the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, & without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, & the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, & the darkness did not comprehend it. There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. This man came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. That was the true Light which gives light to every man coming into the world. He was in the world, & the world was made through Him, & the world did not know Him. He came to His own, & His own did not receive Him. But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name: who were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.””

Mat. 7:13-14—“Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate & broad is the way that leads to destruction, & there are many who go in by it. Because narrow is the gate & difficult is the way which leads to life, & there are few who find it.”

There will be many among the many nations whose own astonishment at the Savior, will lock them out of relationship with Messiah Jesus, this prophesied & anointed Servant of God.

Likewise, there will be many among the many nations whose own astonishment at their Savior, will draw them into relationship with Messiah Jesus, this prophesied & anointed Servant of God.

?Have you believed the report of the Servant of God?

Acts 26:26—“...since this thing was not done in a corner.”

Jn. 20:29—“Jesus said to him, “Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen & yet have believed.”

Rom. 10:9-10, 13—“...if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus & believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, & with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”.....“For “whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.””

Argumentation:

Heb. 12:1-3—“Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, & the sin which so easily ensnares us, & let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author & finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, & has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. For consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners against Himself, lest you become weary & discouraged in your souls.”

Zech. 12:10—“And I will pour on the house of David & on the inhabitants of Jerusalem the Spirit of grace & supplication; then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, & grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn.”

Rev. 1:4-7—“John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you & peace from Him who is & who was & who is to come, & from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, & from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, & the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us & washed us from our sins in His own blood, & has made us kings & priests to His God & Father, to Him be glory & dominion forever & ever. Amen. Behold, He is coming with clouds, & every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

Mat. 26:63-68—“But Jesus kept silent. And the high priest answered & said to Him, “I put You under oath by the living God: Tell us if You are the Christ, the Son of God!” Jesus said to him, “It is as you said. Nevertheless, I say to you, hereafter you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Power, & coming on the clouds of heaven.” Then the high priest tore his clothes, saying, “He has spoken blasphemy! What further need do we have of witnesses? Look, now you have heard His blasphemy! “What do you think?” They answered & said, “He is deserving of death.” Then they spat in His face & beat Him; & others struck Him with the palms of their hands, saying, “Prophesy to us, Christ! Who is the one who struck You?””

Mat. 27:35-44—[On the Cross]—“Then they crucified Him, & divided His garments, casting lots, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet: “They divided My garments among them, And for My clothing they cast lots.” Sitting down, they kept watch over Him there. And they put up over His head the accusation written against Him: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS. Then two robbers were crucified with Him, one on the right & another on the left. And those who passed by blasphemed Him, wagging their heads & saying, “You who destroy the temple & build it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” Likewise the chief priests also, mocking with the scribes & elders, said, “He saved others; Himself He cannot save. If He is the King of Israel, let Him now come down from the cross, & we will believe Him. He trusted in God; let Him deliver Him now if He will have Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” Even the robbers who were crucified with Him reviled Him with the same thing.

Ill treatment by governing authorities:

2Tim. 1:16-17—“The Lord grant mercy to the household of Onesiphorus, for he often refreshed me, & was not ashamed of my chain; but when he arrived in Rome, he sought me out very zealously & found me.”

Heb. 10:34—“for you had compassion on me in my chains...”

2Tim. 1:7-8—“For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power & of love & of a sound mind. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me His prisoner, but share with me in the sufferings for the gospel according to the power of God,”

Acts 28:20—“...for the hope of Israel I am bound with this chain.”

Eph. 6:17-20—“And take the helmet of salvation, & the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer & supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance & supplication for all the saints--& for me, that utterance may be given to me, that I may open my mouth boldly to make known the mystery of the gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains; that in it I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak.”

Rev. 5:1-7—“And I saw in the right hand of Him who sat on the throne a scroll written inside & on the back, sealed with seven seals. Then I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll & to loose its seals?” And no one in heaven or on the earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll, or to look at it. So I wept much, because no one was found worthy to open & read the scroll, or to look at it. But one of the elders said to me, “Do not weep. Behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has prevailed to open the scroll & to loose its seven seals.” And I looked, & behold, in the midst of the throne & of the four living creatures, & in the midst of the elders, stood a Lamb as though it had been slain, having seven horns & seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God sent out into all the earth. Then He came & took the scroll out of the right hand of Him who sat on the throne.”

Php. 2:9-11—“Therefore God also has highly exalted Him & given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, & of those on earth, & of those under the earth, & that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

Col. 2:6-3:7—with/in/by/due to/because of/thru Christ—“As you have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him, rooted & built up in Him & established in the faith, as you have been taught, abounding in it with thanksgiving. Beware lest anyone cheat you through philosophy & empty deceit, according to the tradition of men, according to the basic principles of the world, & not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; & you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality & power. In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. And you, being dead in your trespasses & the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. Having disarmed principalities & powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. So let no one judge you in food or in drink, or regarding a festival or a new moon or sabbaths, which are a shadow of things to come, but the substance is of Christ. Let no one cheat you of your reward, taking delight in false humility & worship of angels, intruding into those things which he has not seen, vainly puffed up by his fleshly mind, & not holding fast to the Head, from whom all the body, nourished & knit together by joints & ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God. Therefore, if you died with Christ from the basic principles of the world, why, as though living in the world, do you subject yourselves to regulations-- “Do not touch, do not taste, do not handle,” which all concern things which perish with the using--according to the commandments & doctrines of men? These things indeed have an appearance of wisdom in self-imposed religion, false humility, & neglect of the body, but are of no value against the indulgence of the flesh. If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. For you died, & your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, & covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience, in which you yourselves once walked when you lived in them.”
