BY HIS STRIPES-V—Isaiah 52:13—53:1-12

OR: God’s Remedy For Sin

Attention:

No opener!

Background:

~700 years prior to the Cross of Christ Jesus, Isaiah prophesied of the substitutionary atonement which would one day come thru God’s “Servant”(52:13a). Isaiah records details of the coming Servant’s willing sacrifice for the sake of all sinners.

The prophet Isaiah declared a future time when God’s unique Servant would provide the remedy for sin.

Jesus is God’s remedy for sin.

Why/How/When is Jesus God’s remedy for sin?

Our reception of Jesus as God’s remedy for personal sin.

‘RECEIVE’—More than mental acceptance, which only makes possibilities plausible. ‘Receiving’ has to do with acceptance by the heart, so that what is received, is taken to the point of actual reliance upon what or Who is received.

INSTRUMENTATION(53:1b)

Explanation:(53:1b)The Arm of the Lord/Agent/Agency

53:1—“Who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?”

“And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?”

“The arm of the LORD is the disclosure of His power.”—EBC

*Jesus, God’s unique “Servant” & Son, is the ‘instrument’/means/way—“the arm”—of God’s power to save!

2Kgs. 19:31-34—“For out of Jerusalem shall go a remnant, And those who escape from Mount Zion. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.’ “Therefore thus says the LORD concerning the king of Assyria: ‘He shall not come into this city, Nor shoot an arrow there, Nor come before it with shield, Nor build a siege mound against it. By the way that he came, By the same shall he return; And he shall not come into this city,’ Says the LORD. ‘For I will defend this city, to save it For My own sake & for My servant David’s sake.’”

Isa. 9:6-7—“For unto us a Child is born, Unto us a Son is given; And the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government & peace There will be no end, Upon the throne of David & over His kingdom, To order it & establish it with judgment & justice From that time forward, even forever. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will perform this.”

God’s Christ(‘Anointed One’) is “the arm of the LORD.”

Jn. 12:34-41—“The people answered Him, “We have heard from the law that the Christ remains forever; & how can You say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up’? Who is this Son of Man?” Then Jesus said to them, “A little while longer the light is with you. Walk while you have the light, lest darkness overtake you; he who walks in darkness does not know where he is going. While you have the light, believe in the light, that you may become sons of light.” These things Jesus spoke, & departed, & was hidden from them. But although He had done so many signs before them, they did not believe in Him, that the word of Isaiah the prophet might be fulfilled, which he spoke: “Lord, who has believed our report? And to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed?” Therefore they could not believe, because Isaiah said again: “He has blinded their eyes & hardened their hearts, Lest they should see with their eyes, Lest they should understand with their hearts & turn, So that I should heal them.” These things Isaiah said when he saw His glory & spoke of Him.”

Only in the coming Servant is there ‘Good News’ or a ‘Gospel’ at all!

So in the Gospel(AKA-‘Good News’) the power of God’s reconciliation thru Christ is seen & experienced. The Good News is thus one aspect of “the arm of the Lord.”

Ps. 119:46—“I will speak of Your testimonies also before kings, And will not be ashamed.”

Rom. 1:16-17—“For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first & also for the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “The just shall live by faith.””

'Technically' speaking, “the arm of the Lord” has been “revealed” to & for ALL people...

BUT 'practically' speaking(functional/utilitarian) the Lord’s power to save, secure, & empower is only “revealed” to those who will ‘hear’(or accept) God’s truth—thru faith to faith contact! “The arm of the Lord” is that actual truth/plan/design which God Himself has “revealed” to the world—1)thru Adam & Eve & ‘pre-Israel’, 2)thru Israel, 3) thru Christ, 4)thru God’s people.

Mat. 11:16-26—“But to what shall I liken this generation? It is like children sitting in the marketplaces & calling to their companions, “& saying: ‘We played the flute for you, And you did not dance; We mourned to you, And you did not lament.’ “For John came neither eating nor drinking, & they say, ‘He has a demon.’ “The Son of Man came eating & drinking, & they say, ‘Look, a glutton & a winebibber, a friend of tax collectors & sinners!’ But wisdom is justified by her children.” Then He began to rebuke the cities in which most of His mighty works had been done, because they did not repent: “Woe to you, Chorazin! Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Tyre & Sidon, they would have repented long ago in sackcloth & ashes.” But I say to you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre & Sidon in the day of judgment than for you. And you, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, will be brought down to Hades; for if the mighty works which were done in you had been done in Sodom, it would have remained until this day. But I say to you that it shall be more tolerable for the land of Sodom in the day of judgment than for you.” At that time Jesus answered & said, “I thank You, Father, Lord of heaven & earth, that You have hidden these things from the wise & prudent & have revealed them to babes. Even so, Father, for so it seemed good in Your sight.”

“Arm”—ewrz zer-o’-ah, OR(shortened)--erz zer-o’-ah, AND(fem.)--hewrz zer-o-aw’, OR--herz zer-o-aw’—Noun Fem.—1) Arm, forearm, shoulder, strength—1a) Arm, 1b) Arm(as symbol of strength), 1c) Forces(political & military), 1d) Shoulder(of animal sacrificed). Strong—The arm(as stretched out), OR (of animals)--The foreleg; figuratively--Force.

“LORD”(See 53:6, 10)—hwhy Yeh-ho-vaw’—Noun Proper Deity—Jehovah = “the existing One”—1) The proper name of the one true God—1a) unpronounced except with the vowel pointings of ynda Ad-o-noy’. Strong—from hyh[To exist, be, become, come to pass]; (the)Self-Existent or Eternal; Jehovah, Jewish national name of God.

“Revealed”—hlg gaw-law’—Niphal(passive/reflexive) Perfect—1) To uncover, remove—1a) (Qal)--1a1) To uncover, 1a2) To remove, depart, 1a3) To go into exile; 1b) (Niphal)--1b1) (reflexive)—1b1a) To uncover oneself, 1b1b) To discover or show oneself, 1b1c) To reveal himself (of God); 1b2) (passive)—1b2a) To be uncovered, 1b2b) To be disclosed, be discovered, 1b2c) To be revealed, 1b3) To be removed. Strong—a primitive root; To denude(especially in a disgraceful sense); by implication--To exile(captives being usually stripped); figuratively--To reveal. Argumentation:

1Cor. 1:17-19—The apostle Paul stated,—“For Christ did not send me to baptize, but to preach the gospel, not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of no effect. For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. For it is written: “I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.”

We must each consider the value of God’s revelation of Himself...

Rev. 2:11, 17, 29; 3:6, 13, 22—“He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”...”

Rev. 13:9—“If anyone has an ear, let him hear.”

Mat. 11:15; 13:9, 43—“He who has ears to hear, let him hear!”

Heb. 1:1-4—“God, who at various times & in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory & the express image of His person, & upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.”

The writer of ‘Hebrews’ was obviously writing to people who were tempted to considered Jesus as a mere angel rather than a person of the Triune God.

Jn. 16:33—Jesus said,—“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”

Mk. 8:34-38—“When He had called the people to Himself, with His disciples also, He said to them, “Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, & take up his cross, & follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake & the gospel’s will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, & loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me & My words in this adulterous & sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.””

1Cor. 2:1-5—“And I, brethren, when I came to you, did not come with excellence of speech or of wisdom declaring to you the testimony of God. For I determined not to know anything among you except Jesus Christ & Him crucified. I was with you in weakness, in fear, & in much trembling. And my speech & my preaching were not with persuasive words of human wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit & of power, that your faith should not be in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”

An iPhone is an amazing item/It is vastly more than just a telephone/It is a small computer that you can carry with you just about anywhere/One can take pictures, text, watch instructional videos, examine the Greek, Hebrew & Aramaic from which the Bible was translated, Access Bible commentaries & all manner of other instructional stuff, Order just about anything, even food; Make reminder lists; Set calendar dates & Set alarms; etc.../But I know a lot of people(usually older people) who only use it for making telephone calls!—What a waste of potential!/And I know a lot of people(usually younger) who only use it for Facebook or Instagram—What a waste of potential!/INSTRUMENTATION

Radio/You can choose from many stations that broadcast many messages/In a real sense all people are like radios/They are all equipped to receive God’s truth/BUT they must be willingly ‘tuned’ to God’s ‘station’—God’s direction/INSTRUMENTATION

Legos are a child’s play toy that took the place of ‘Lincoln Logs’ & ‘Erector Sets’/Legos are hard plastic building blocks/They come in a plethora of shapes designed for special applications, but the most common one is the six-nubbed rectangular block—inch to two inches long/A child or an adult/ can build practically anything out of legos/INSTRUMENTATION

?Have you considered ‘why’ it is that you have been unable to receive the word of God as fact rather than fiction, or to receive it as questionable at best rather than the as the proven word of God?
