Summary: A message about how God has taken from captivity and made us His children, children of the King!

From Slavery to Royalty

We do not like to talk about slavery. For the first 100 years of our nation, the institution of slavery left a dark scar on our country, one we are still healing from. While slavery was different in many ways during biblical times, Paul uses the imagery of a slave in reminding us of the great grace that God has lavished on us.

From Slavery

• We all were slaves

Slaves to sin

Slaves to the flesh

Slaves to the law

The devil was our master through the flesh

Romans 8:14-17

For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”

The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ,

if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

TWICE MINE: THE BOY AND HIS BOAT

Tom carried his new boat to the edge of the river. He carefully placed it in the water and slowly let out the string. He marveled at how well the ship he built moved in the water. Tom sat in the warm sunshine and enjoyed the boat. Suddenly a strong current caught the boat. Tom tried to pull it back to the shore, but the string broke. The little boat raced away down the river.

Tom ran along the sandy shore as fast as he could. Soon his little boat slipped out of sight. All afternoon he searched for the boat. Finally, when it was too dark to look any longer, Tom sadly went home.

A few days later, on the way home from school, Tom spotted a boat just like his in a store window. When he got closer, he could see - sure enough - it was his

Tom hurried to the store manager, “Sir, that is my boat in your window. I made it”

“Sorry son,” the manager replied, “someone else brought that boat in this morning. If you want it, you’ll have to buy it for one dollar.”

Tom ran home and counted all his money. He had exactly one dollar When he reached the store, he rushed to the counter; “Here’s the money for my boat” As he left the store, Tom hugged his boat and said; “Now you’re my boat twice. First I made you, but then I lost you. I found you again, and I bought you back”

To Royalty

• From Slavery to Royalty

• From Orphans to Children

• From enemy to ally

• From lost to found

• From dead to alive

• From hungry to heirs

See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!

And that is what we are!

The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known.

But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.

1 John 3:1-3

We are children of the king.

Remember when life is unfair- you are a child of the King!

Remember when you get that diagnosis you dread, you are a child of the King!

Remember when loved ones walk out on you, you are a child of the King!

Remember when they persecute you and mock your Savior, you are a child of the King!

Remember when you feel like you have lost everything, you are a child of the King!

Remember when you are tempted to go back to a life of slavery, you are a child of the King!

As Children of the King:

• We get new clothes! New Home! New Life!

• We are not meant to keep living as slaves

• Why would we leave the castle and go back to chains?

• We are to work out your faith with fear and trembling

• We are to prepare our life and our world for the coming of the King!

Come today and become a child of the King. Leave behind a life of slavery and captivity.
