Unfortunately I woke up this morning with the chorus of CMA award winner(Country Music Assoc. 2019) Luke Combs, stuck in my head... where he sings the praises of, “Long-neck, ice cold beer never broke my heart.”

That might make a good country song, & Luke might be convinced that beer won’t let him down. But I know surely it will!

And beyond that, I know Someone who will actually never ever break my heart or any that trust in Him, so that God's people can joyfully sing...

7—“But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God & not of us.”

God’s shining upon Paul & Timothy’s hearts(:6) for the sake of other’s salvation & sanctification is considered a “treasure.”

However, such “treasure” is contained “in earthen vessels.” That is, the “treasure” itself is contained, transported, & protected in containers of a delicate/fragile nature. Such “vessels” are easily broken.

The purpose of God’s use of such fragile vessels” is so that “the excellence of the power” will “not” be understood or seen as arising by means of the “earthen vessels”, but will rather be recognized as obviously sourced from God.”

Because of it’s ministry, every Container of Faith is:

3)Essential

4)Inconsequential

Thru PRACTICALITIES Of FAITH(:8-11)

Explanation:(:8-10)

:8—“We are hard pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;”

:9—“persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed—“

In these verses Paul concisely, yet effectively describes the human experience of fragility. That is, of bearing the treasure of the Good News of Christ Jesus in the so-called “earthen vessels” of verse :7.

Here—:8-7— we gain the practical, tangible, & pertinent nature & intensity of what it means to be committed to Christ Jesus! These contrasts describe what true trust & devotion to Jesus inevitably invite to one’s self & one’s life.

God’s people bearing the treasure of “the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus” are, because of that treasure,...

1)Tightly squeezed from without, yet the Christian’s way is never actually narrowed or cut off.

2)“Perplexed”—At times facing uncertainty about many things, yet never “despairing”, because Christian certainty—the peace that passes all understanding(Php. 4:6-7)— is found in God’s direction, whom no one cannot take from us.

Php. 4:6-7—“Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer & supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God; & the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts & minds through Christ Jesus.”

3)“Persecuted”—Pursued maliciously by men because of our faith, yet in reality never being “forsaken” of God.

4)Thrown down to the ground as it were, but never lost to God’s purposes.

•As in a sports like football, the player that is thrown down doesn’t stay down. He gets up & continues in the game.

Living empowered by Jesus is not something that is done on Sundays & Wednesdays in local Baptist church meeting houses.

God’s people “always”(continually) manifest(“carry about”) their “Lord Jesus’” “life” by virtue of their remaining ‘dead to self’ for His sake.

In order for the “life of Jesus”(cf.-Jn. 1:4) to be given tangible expression in the Christian minister’s body, Jesus’ “dying” for sin must continuously be “carried about.” That “life” is seen/witnessed/observed thru the practical application of one’s faith(:8-9). This concept is restated in similar words in :11.

:10 Argumentation:

Rom. 6:3-13—“Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God. Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. And do not present your members as instruments of unrighteousness to sin, but present yourselves to God as being alive from the dead, & your members as instruments of righteousness to God.”

1Cor. 11:23-26—“For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; & when He had given thanks, He broke it & said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread & drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.”

:11—For we who live are always delivered to death for Jesus’ sake, that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh.

Again those who find & have life(“live”) in Christ Jesus(Mat. 10:32-39), have no qualms/misgivings about being “delivered to death” because of their Master. “Death” is welcomed by the true child of God rather than ever bringing dishonor to Jesus who died for them.

Mat. 10:32-39—“Therefore whoever confesses Me before men, him I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, him I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven. Do not think that I came to bring peace on earth. I did not come to bring peace but a sword. For I have come to ‘set a man against his father, a daughter against her mother, & a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law’; & ‘a man’s enemies will be those of his own household.’[Micah 7:6] “He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who does not take his cross & follow after Me is not worthy of Me. He who finds his life will lose it, & he who loses his life for My sake will find it.”

Jn. 12:24, 25—““Most assuredly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the ground & dies, it remains alone; but if it dies, it produces much grain. He who loves his life will lose it, & he who hates his life in this world will keep it for eternal life.”

Heb. 2:14-15—“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh & blood, He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is, the devil, & release those who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”
