One interesting truth of scriptures is that the invisible God can be seen. The bible says that Moses 'endured as seeing Him who is invisible'. (Hebrews 11:27) But how can someone who is invisible been seen? How possible is it for someone to see, know and recognize the Person who is famous for being invisible?
Well, if God can be seen at all as Hebrews 11:27 shows, it simply means that He is not totally invisible. There must be a part of man that sees and knows Him.
God is only invisible to the outer man; He is not invisible to the inward man. In other words, God is visible to the spirit of man although He is invisible to his natural senses. It is possible to see the invisible God; but we can only see Him by our spirits since He is a Spirit. Jesus said God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth. (John 4:24 – KJV) So, seeing and knowing God can only be done by our spirits.
Now, the knowledge of God comes into our spirit through His word. Therefore, what we have to do in order to see Him is to interact with His word by our spirit. God has revealed Himself in His word; so whenever we transact with the word, we are actually in transaction with God Himself. It is by fellowship with the word of God that we know Him intimately, personally and experientially. Such knowledge cannot be received any other way.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. (John 1:1)
When you fellowship with the word of God, you will ‘see’ Him and by seeing Him you will ‘know’ Him. This is the only way to ‘know’ God! Many just know about God, they do not really know Him. They know about Him from what others say, from what nature say or from what they think He should be but they do not know Him. To know Him, you must see Him and to see Him, you must look into His word by your spirit.
To see God by the spirit does not mean to see a vision or to see a form. It means to receive a revelation of God that assures your heart and gives you an awareness of God that you could not have otherwise received. When God appeared to Israel in the wilderness, they did not see a form but they all saw Him. He made Himself known to them through His word.
Take careful heed to yourselves, for you saw no form when the Lord spoke to you at Horeb out of the midst of the fire (Deuteronomy 4:15)
God does not like to show Himself by forms and images, He primarily shows Himself by His word. That is why those who ask Him for visions don’t get any. (This is not to say that God does not give visions or that visions are irrelevant.) The greatest vision is the vision of the word and it is always readily available for all who are interested. All other visions are secondary to this.
Then the Lord appeared again in Shiloh. For the Lord revealed Himself to Samuel in Shiloh by the word of the Lord. (1 Samuel 3:21)
This is the way God appears – by revealing Himself through His word. It is the only way He can be seen. So, if you want to see God, don’t look around and don’t look towards the sky; look instead into His revealed word. You will always see Him by His word whenever you engage the word with your spirit. Please say these words to yourself again and again: God appears by revealing Himself through His word. The prophets of old did not just hear the word of God, they saw it!
The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem. (Isaiah 2:1)
The word of the Lord that came to Micah...which he saw concerning Samaria and Jerusalem. (Micah 1:1)
The limited revelation of God that Old Testament folks received came by the ministry of the word through the prophets. And when the time came for man to be given the full and comprehensive knowledge of God, the Word became flesh and came down personally.
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth. (John 1:14)
Jesus Christ, the Word in the flesh is the full and complete revelation of God to mankind. He is the Living Word that the written word (the scriptures) reveals. He is the full and comprehensive revelation of God outside of whom God can neither be seen nor known. Jesus is the totality of God’s word and the full expression of the person of the Father.
'God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son, whom He has appointed heir of all things, through whom also He made the worlds; who being the brightness of His glory and the express image of His person, and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become so much better than the angels, as He has by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.' (Hebrews 1:1-2)
In times past, God spoke at various times, in various ways and by various prophets but when the fullness of the times came, He gave His Son as His final and most authoritative message to mankind. Jesus Christ, the Son of God is not one of the prophets; He is the word that the prophets attempted to speak. He is also not one of the various ways by which God speaks; He is the only Word that God has to speak!
God did not speak by statements; He spoke by His Son, Jesus Christ. Jesus is God’s once and for all statement to man. He is the Father-God’s ultimate and final revelation to man; God has nothing else to say to anyone outside what He has said by Him. He is the once spoken word of God for all eternity.
This Jesus, the Living Word has poured Himself into the scriptures, the written word. So, by studying and meditating on the scriptures, you get to see Jesus through the pages and thereby, know God for who He truly is. This is how to see God anytime you like. There is no need to fast your life to death on a mountain; just separate yourself unto the word. Take up the scriptures in an attitude of honour, begin to study and ponder deeply on those words. You will be amazed at the transformation this simple lifestyle will bring to your life.
