Attention:

There are certain constraints/limits/boundaries within which mankind’s restoration can be accomplished before God! If you/we will not operate within those constraints, then you/we will never reach the heights of God’s intent for yourself/ourselves.

Our Success as Christians is Constrained thru certain relationships & actions.

CONSTRAIN—‘To severely restrict the scope, extent, or activity of.’ OR--‘To compel or force toward a particular course of action.’

OR rather--for OUR/Today’s APPLICATION--‘To keep within God’s limits.’

Need:

The constraints attending mankind’s restoration may not be what you may imagine!

God blessed Noah’s family with a restoration based on relationship.

Man’s restoration is to be constrained/limited contained/determined thru relationships.

How do relationships constrain/determine our restoration?

:9—“And as for Me, behold, I establish My covenant with you & with your descendants after you,

10—“& with every living creature that is with you: the birds, the cattle, & every beast of the earth with you, of all that go out of the ark, every beast of the earth.”

Here we see the actual words of God as directed to Noah & his sons.

“As for Me”—

God(:8) takes it upon Himself to “establish” a “covenant” that is entirely His “covenant.”

A “Covenant” is:–“A [formal] agreement which brings about a relationship of commitment between God & his people.”—New Oxford American Dictionary/Webster

Other words describing a “covenant” are: Accord/Pact/Treaty.

There is nothing in Noah to warrant this “covenant”, other than his own faithfulness to God(6:8-9). Noah is the exception among all other people on earth!

Gen. 6:8-9—“But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD. This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.”

God Almighty is the One who causes the “covenant” to stand.

God “establishes” His covenant between Himself & Noah, yet it is a “covenant” which will also remain with Noah’s “descendants” after Him.

•Thus this “covenant” is for all generations of humanity from Noah on. This “covenant” is also for all of creation along with mankind, for all perpetuity(8:21; 9:12, 17), that is, until the end of these ‘current’ things(8:21-22; Rev. 21:1). This “covenant” is not dependent upon the personal faithfulness of anyone other than God Himself! It is independent of any faith other than God’s faithfulness to fulfill it Himself!

Gen. 8:21-22—“And the LORD smelled a soothing aroma. Then the LORD said in His heart, “I will never again curse the ground for man’s sake, although the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; nor will I again destroy every living thing as I have done. While the earth remains, Seedtime & harvest, Cold & heat, Winter & summer, And day & night Shall not cease.”

Rev. 21:1—“Now I saw a new heaven & a new earth, for the first heaven & the first earth had passed away. Also there was no more sea.”

:11—“Thus I establish My covenant with you: Never again shall all flesh be cut off by the waters of the flood; never again shall there be a flood to destroy the earth.””

The actual “covenant” is stated here...It directly relates the past action of ‘the Flood’(Noahic) to the current state of affairs(post-Flood) resulting from the Flood’s end/termination/culmination.

God, thru the covenant He initiated, states that “all flesh” will “never again” be “cut off” by a flood. It is reiterated & expanded to say that the earth—as known then & as we currently know it, would never be “destroyed” by a flood as Noah, et al had just experienced.

Two clarifications:

a.)This does NOT mean that the earth would NEVER be destroyed, but only that it would not be destroyed by a similar world-wide flood!—That’s God’s promise!

•The NT is very plain that both the current heavens & earth will one day be destroyed with fervent heat & replaced with a new heavens & earth(2Pet. 3:7-13; Rev. 21:1).

b.)NOR is God stating, that there will NEVER be localized flooding thruout our current earth’s remaining time(Gen. 8:22).

Jos. 3:14-16—“So it was, when the people set out from their camp to cross over the Jordan, with the priests bearing the ark of the covenant before the people, & as those who bore the ark came to the Jordan, & the feet of the priests who bore the ark dipped in the edge of the water(for the Jordan overflows all its banks during the whole time of harvest), that the waters which came down from upstream stood still, & rose in a heap very far away at Adam, the city that is beside Zaretan. So the waters that went down into the Sea of the Arabah, the Salt Sea, failed, & were cut off; & the people crossed over opposite Jericho.”

Somebody upstream in Adam &/or Zaretan experienced a flood!

*First Baptist don’t want you looking for excuses for not trusting Jesus!

Strong—from an unused root probably meaning to be firm; The earth(at large, or partitively a land)

Argumentation:

Rom. 8:1-4—“There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin & death. For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

Rom. 8:18-23—“For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creation eagerly waits for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of Him who subjected it in hope; because the creation itself also will be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation groans & labors with birth pangs together until now. Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body.”

Col. 1:15-17—“He[Christ Jesus] is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by Him all things were created that are in heaven & that are on earth, visible & invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him & for Him. And He is before all things, & in Him all things consist.”

Gen. 1:31—“Then God saw everything that He had made, & indeed it was very good.[including man’s freedom to both sin & return to God] So the evening & the morning were the sixth day.”

Illustration:

Creation, including man:

I saw a video the other day about how one part of God’s creation completely changed the environment of Yellowstone National Park/Basically, the wolf population was hunted to extinction or so controlled that it was of no consequence to their former prey/The big game the wolves preyed upon were mainly elk/With the wolves limited, the elk population grew so much that many of the plants the elk eat began to be limited/That limitation limited the beaver population, which limited the formation of ponds, which in turn limited the frog population, which in turn limited the raccoon population, etc, etc.../Everything is tied to all others!/Restoration is constrained thru relationship with...COVENANT with the earth

:12—“And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me & you, & every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations:”

“God’s “covenant” has an attending “sign” that is specific to it. The purpose of a “sign” is to provide an outward & visible connection/correlation for His verbal—& otherwise undetectable—commitment. So this “sign of the covenant” will ensure the validity of God’s covenant “for perpetual generations.”

•Just as the Holy Spirit is the guarantee of the believer’s eternal life in heaven with God(2Cor. 1:22; 5:4-5)

*The Holy Spirit is the undeniable presence of the unseen God.

*Again, the covenant is for all mankind for all time(until the end of this ‘old’ world).

This particular “covenant” is “perpetual” & the “sign” of it is also “perpetual.”

•This “perpetual” “covenant” with its accompanying “sign” remain in place regardless of the Mosaic Law & Christ’s coming. It will remain in force until the new earth is established(Rev. 21:1-5), because it is specifically tied to the existing physical earth, rather than to faith.

“Sign”(See :13, 17)—twa 'owth—1) sign, signal—1a) A distinguishing mark, 1b) Banner, 1c) Remembrance, 1d) Miraculous sign, 1e) Omen, 1f) Warning; 2) Token, ensign, standard, miracle, proof. Strong—A signal(literally or figuratively), as a flag, beacon, monument, omen, prodigy, evidence, etc.

“Between”—Nyb ban—Noun Masc./Fem.—1) Between, among, in the midst of(with other prepositions), From between. Strong—(sometimes in the plural masculine or feminine); Constructive—properly--A distinction—the constructive form of an otherwise unused noun from Nyb[to separate mentally(or distinguish), i.e. generally--understand]. Substantive Masc.—Between(repeated before each noun, often with other particles) & used only as a preposition; also--Either...Or—as a conjunction. Used 32X.

“Perpetual”(See :16—“Everlasting”)—Mlwe o-lawm’—Noun Masc.—1) Long duration, antiquity, futurity, for ever, ever, everlasting, evermore, perpetual, old, ancient, world. Strong—properly, Concealed, i.e. The vanishing point; generally--Time out of mind(past or future), i.e. practically--Eternity; frequentatively adverbial(especially with prepositional prefix)--Always. Used 439X.

“Generations”—rwd dowr—1) Period, generation, habitation, dwelling. Strong—properly, A revolution of time, i.e. An age or generation; also A dwelling. Used 167X.

:13—“I set My rainbow in the cloud, & it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me & the earth.”

The promised “sign” of God’s covenant with “the earth” consists of a commonly perceived phenomenon—the existence of a “rainbow in the cloud.”

“I set”—God is the determiner of the rainbow’s presence as well as it’s bounds.

“My rainbow”—The “rainbow” is God’s “rainbow.” He is the creator & originator of it. He is the God of all nature.

Mat. 8:23-27—“Now when He[Jesus] got into a boat, His disciples followed Him. And suddenly a great tempest arose on the sea, so that the boat was covered with the waves. But He was asleep. Then His disciples came to Him & awoke Him, saying, “Lord, save us! We are perishing!” But He said to them, “Why are you fearful, O you of little faith?” Then He arose & rebuked the winds & the sea, & there was a great calm. So the men marveled, saying, “Who can this be, that even the winds & the sea obey Him?”

“in the cloud”—The “rainbow” will always be associated with “the cloud” or in association with a storm or a potential storm. The environment of the earth was & is very different after the Flood, seeing that “the rainbow” was evidently not present before.

It is promised that whenever the “rainbow” appears “in the cloud”—conceivably during the threat of a storm or rain event—It remains a witness to the perpetual covenant which God has initiated—to NEVER bring the waters together for a flood of total destruction(:11-12).

•This also makes secure, that though flood conditions will remain locally active throughout the earth’s presence, yet any flood conditions will not produce a worldwide Flood. A flood may inundate ‘my world’ but not ‘our world.’

Well what about global warming preacher?!—If it’s warming, then it’s warming! & If you are or I am responsible for it’s warming, then we must own that responsibility & do what is needed to undo or fulfill your/my part!

“...the covenant between Me & the earth.”—God’s covenant is with the entire “earth,” which entails all life including man. It involves & effects the entirety of earth’s sphere of existence & influence.

Unbelieving skeptics will assign these verses to myth & legend. They will see this as a ‘primitive’ unenlightened/unscientific attempt to explain the existence of “rainbows.”

•Secular science can describe how a rainbow forms. It is related to water vapor, temperature, & light.

•BUT this does NOT mean that God’s existence has been disproven or damaged, simply because the “sign” has an earthly physical formation. What a ‘myth assigning’ mentality actually says, is that a person believing it as a myth, is willing to go to any lengths(lies, deception, half-truths, ignorance) to disprove God’s existence. Such people are ignorant of 1)God’s ways, & 2)The Bible’s truth, & 3)Reality, & 4)Are not reasonably or scientifically minded.

**Also, to use the “rainbow” “sign” as a symbol to celebrate ‘gay’ness(a sin!) is utterly blasphemous from a Christian perspective! From a Christian perspective, the rainbow is a sign of God’s commitment to sinners in need of His salvation!

“Set”—Ntn naw-than'—Qal Perfect—1) To give, put, set—1a1) To give, bestow, grant, permit, ascribe, employ, devote, consecrate, dedicate, pay wages, sell, exchange, lend, commit, entrust, give over, deliver up, yield produce, occasion, produce, requite to, report, mention, utter, stretch out, extend, 1a2) To put, set, put on, put upon, set, appoint, assign, designate, 1a3) To make, constitute. Strong—a primitive root; To give, used with greatest latitude of application(put, make, etc.).

“Rainbow”—tvq keh'-sheth—1) Bow—1a) Bow(for hunting, battle), 1b) Bowmen, archers, 1c) Bow(fig. of might), 1d) Rainbow. Strong—from hvq kaw-shaw' in the original sense(of vwq qowsh) of bending: A bow, for shooting(hence, figuratively--strength) or the Iris.

“Cloud”(See :14, 16)—Nne aw-nawn'—1) Cloud, cloudy, cloud-mass. Strong—A cloud(as covering the sky), i.e. the Nimbus or thunder-cloud.

“Sign”(See :12, 17)—twa 'owth—1) sign, signal—1a) A distinguishing mark, 1b) Banner, 1c) Remembrance, 1d) Miraculous sign, 1e) Omen, 1f) Warning; 2) Token, ensign, standard, miracle, proof. Strong—A signal(literally or figuratively), as a flag, beacon, monument, omen, prodigy, evidence, etc.

:14—“It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud;”

“When” God causes the storm “cloud” to appear “over the earth” He will also bring with it, a visible rainbow—‘His’(“My”) rainbow(:13).

The presence of “the cloud” is integral to the appearance of “the rainbow.” This is a general physical reality.

This is not so much for man as it is for God Himself to witness(:15).

Men are limited as to how they view “the rainbow.” It may be seen on one side of “a cloud” while others located on other sides of the same “cloud” may not see it at all. God sees all of the clouds & storms globally, at once, individually, & future.

“Bring...over”—Nne aw-nan'—Piel Infinitive—1) (Piel) To make appear, produce, bring (clouds). Strong—a primitive root; To cover; used only as a denominative from Nne aw-nawn'(“Cloud”), To cloud over; figuratively--To act covertly, i.e. Practice magic.

“Cloud”(See :13, 16)—Nne aw-nawn'—1) Cloud, cloudy, cloud-mass. Strong—A cloud(as covering the sky), i.e. the Nimbus or thunder-cloud.

“Seen”(See :16—“Look on”)—har raw-aw'—Niphal Perfect—1) To see, look at, inspect, perceive, consider—1b) (Niphal)—1b1) To appear, present oneself, 1b2) To be seen, 1b3) To be visible. Strong—a primitive root; To see, literally or figuratively(in numerous applications, direct & implied, transitive, intransitive & causative).
