HEALTHY INDEPENDENCE-I—Jeremiah 17:1-14

Attention:

Play Ball!

A father introduced his 5-year-old son to the game of baseball by taking him to several games.

The Star-Spangled Banner was sung before the start of each game, & the little fellow got to where he had memorized the patriotic song.

Then the father & son attended church on a Sunday shortly before Independence Day. Lo & behold, the congregation sang The Star-Spangled Banner. The little guy was so excited that he could hardly contain himself & sang along with great glee.

As the preacher got up to preach, the little boy did what he’d always done after the Star-Spangled Banner. He suddenly jumped to his feet & yelled out, at the top of his lungs, "PLAY BALL!!!”

The little guy’s ‘independence’ brought a very different—unwanted/unneeded—focus to the church service!

In contrast, God’s people must exhibit a ‘Healthy’ independence.

?Are you living INDEPENDENTLY of what will destroy you?

The prophet Jeremiah contrasted two major aspects of Independence—Independence from God versus independence from the world.

*Dependence upon YHWH brings independence from worldly influence.

What can be gleaned by contrasting healthy & unhealthy independence?

*How can I be independent of worldly influence?

A RESIDENT REBELLION(:1)

Explanation:(:1)

:1—“The sin of Judah is written with a pen of iron;

With the point of a diamond it is engraved

On the tablet of their heart,

And on the horns of your altars,”

Both the heart & the outflow of the heart are addressed.

That is, “the horns of your altars” represent rather the religious manifestation of the heart.

Rom. 3:23—“for all have sinned & fall short of the glory of God,”

Rom. 6:23—“For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

1Jn. 1:8—“If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, & the truth is not in us.”

Heb. 13:8-10—“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, & forever. Do not be carried about with various & strange doctrines. For it is good that the heart be established by grace, not with foods which have not profited those who have been occupied with them. We have an altar from which those who serve the tabernacle have no right to eat.”

“Only when God wrote his law on his people’s heart could obedience replace rebellion.”(Thompson)

“Wooden images” or Asherah were inherent to worship of Baal, which was locally assimilated & common thruout the Near East among pagans.

•She represented the female principle of fertility” & was specifically associated with sex &/or fertility in human & animal creation.—Charles L. Feinberg in EBC[CLFEBC]

BLINDLY SIGHTED BENEFITS(:3-4)

Explanation:(3-4d)

:3—“O My mountain in the field,

I will give as plunder your wealth, all your treasures,

And your high places of sin within all your borders.”

Due to of God’s choice of Mt. Zion(“My mountain”) to bear His name(Isa. 2:2-3; Mic. 4:1-2; Neh. 1:9; Jer. 26:18; 2Chr. 6:6), it was a physically permanent & prominent testimony to spiritual truth & God’s presence. It shattered God to see His "mountain" of no consequence to His own people!

Isa. 2:2-3—“Now it shall come to pass in the latter days That the mountain of the LORD’S house Shall be established on the top of the mountains, And shall be exalted above the hills; And all nations shall flow to it. Many people shall come & say, “Come, & let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, To the house of the God of Jacob; He will teach us His ways, And we shall walk in His paths.” For out of Zion shall go forth the law, And the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.”

Because God Himself will plunder the sinful gains of His people, they will be forced to “let go” of the “heritage” which He had given them.

The “enemies” they had gained as God’s people will no longer be held back by God’s ideals among His people nor particularly by His power. And they will not simply be on their own, but will have their Almighty Eternal God’s invincible hand against their desire, forcing them toward a particular end.
