Summary: anyone can be a daddy, but it takes a real man to be a father!

Sermon Father's Day 2020

Today is Father's Day. Let’s take a look at what it means to be a Dad.

- Throughout scripture, God has a thing or two to say about the man’s role.

- This is God's standards, & not man’s.

- I’ve used this quote before, but it still pushes my point for being a dad.

- "anyone can be a father, but it takes a real man to be a daddy".

- Well I'm going to turn this quote around, anyone can be a daddy, but it takes a real

man to be a father!

- It takes a real man to live by God’s standards.

- The portrait of our Heavenly Father is displayed for all of us to see.

Q- How closely do we walk in His footsteps?

Psalms 112:1-3

1] Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

[2] His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

[3] Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.

- Dad’s, we walk closely to the One who has made us.

- We take His precepts of, I will prosper my seed, to heart.

- Prayer

Q- Where does any fulfilled life begin?

- With the Lord, & He's called the Lord, because He's our leader, director, Guide!

- So, when we as men start our lives out in Christ, we start walking in the role

God had intended for us to be walking in. To Be Leaders.

- A sad misconception we have today about scripture is the thought that the God of

the Old Testament is different from the God of the New Testament.

- No, He is the same today tomorrow, & yesterday. He doesn’t change.

- Here’s God’s desire, & our role as leaders. This isn’t just for Father’s!

Deuteronomy 6:1-5

1 Now these are the commandments, the statutes, and the judgments, which the Lord your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go to possess it:

2 That thou mightest fear the Lord thy God, to keep all his statutes and his commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the Lord God of thy fathers hath promised thee, in the land that floweth with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord:

5 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

- The calling, the charge is for us to put our love upon God, lead our families, & all that

we know in that love.

- Jesus affirmed the charge, the commandment, in Matthew 22:37-40.

Matthew 22:37-40

37 Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the first and great commandment.

39 And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.

40 On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

- The Foundation of a Father is God, it’s faith in Jesus Christ. There is no other

foundation outside of Him.

- We know the scripture, any other faith is like building on sinking sand. Your house

will crumble.

- Listen again to verses 1-3 of Psalm 112

Psalms 112:1-3

1] Praise ye the LORD. Blessed is the man that feareth the LORD, that delighteth greatly in his commandments.

[2] His seed shall be mighty upon earth: the generation of the upright shall be blessed.

[3] Wealth and riches shall be in his house: and his righteousness endureth for ever.

- There is great blessings that come from following the Lord, & lead your family to

follow.

- The call to be a dad, a Father, is one that is met with great responsibility, leadership.

- The call to be a Father, however is not one that is a call to perfection.

- I know the credentials, or standards for a dad are great. You are called to be the

one who guides & provides for your family,

Q- What If you mess up?

- Any man can look at this, & say, I can’t take that kind of responsibility.

- When you open this book, you are welcomed with the history of great leaders who

didn’t start out as great.

1. King David(the man after God’s own heart). Literally he was an adulterer, & a

murderer

2. John Mark(Barnabas’ cousin, & the writer of the book of Mark) abruptly quit the first missionary trip with Paul, & Barnabas. Later in Philemon Paul calls Mark his fellow worker, a great comfort, & while Paul was imprisoned in Rome he asked Timothy to bring Mark with him.

3. Paul(Saul) fought against the church.

4. Peter denied Jesus three times.

- Each one of these men had great responsibility, but they each grew into their calling.

Q- So, What’s the greatest calling for a dad?

Proverbs 22:6

6] Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

- We are to show our children how great God is.

- Wait a minute. All I can do is my job.

- It is God that has given you the ability to do your job. Praise Him for that, & let

your family know of that praise.

- Paul adds power to this call, because in Ephesians 6:4 he says,

Ephesians 6:4

4] And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.

- I think the hardest part of teaching children is acknowledging God.

Q- How often do we forget to reference everything comes from God?

- When we provide for our family it’s easy to say, I put this food on the table, or I put

this food in your belly.

- Forgetting to do this, is the same as provoking a child to wrath.

Q- Have you ever thought about why we give thanks before our meals?

- When we forget God, the children don’t know God!

- The wrath Paul is talking about isn’t necessarily towards us. Although we will

feel pain from it. It will be wrath towards God.

Q- What’s the point of following God?

Q- What has He done for me?

- This is Why this message is about, anyone can be a daddy, but it takes a real man to

be a Father.

- You could be a Daddy that doesn’t grow, or a Daddy that grows into a Father.

Hence this day, Father’s Day.

- Let me begin to close with reading you the charge, 1 Peter 2:21.

- This Is a charge is for all of us, but explicitly for us men today.

1 Peter 2:21

21] For even hereunto were ye called: because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example, that ye should follow his steps:

- Our roles in life are more simple than any of us realize.

- We are to bring glory to Him who made, & saved us.

- In that simple work, we are greatly blessed. Think of the joy that comes in seeing

God working in your children’s life.

- I Wish all of you Fathers out there a Happy Father’s Day, & I pray that God to use us

in His great work.
