Summary: The Bible tells us quite a bit about Satan.

SATAN

LUCIFER

1. Wise and Beautiful Cherub

Ezekiel 28:11-15

The word of the Lord came to me, saying,

“Son of man, take up a lamentation upon the king of Tyrus (represents Satan)

and say to him, ‘This is what the Lord God says;

Seal up the sum, full of wisdom, and perfect in beauty.

You have been in Eden the garden of God;

You were covered with every precious stone,

the sardius, topaz, and the diamond,

the beryl, the onyx, and the jasper,

the sapphire, the emerald, and the carbuncle, and gold:

The workmanship of your tabrets and of your pipes was prepared in you

in the day that you were created.

“You are the anointed cherub that covers; and I have set you so:

You were on the holy mountain of God;

You have walked up and down in the middle of the stones of fire.

You were perfect in your ways from the day that you were created…

2. Sinned

a. From the beginning

The devil sinned from the beginning. 1 John 3:8

b. Ezekiel 28:15-18

-- Iniquity was found in you.

-- By the multitude of your merchandise they have filled the middle of you with violence, and you have sinned:

-- Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty, you have corrupted your wisdom by reason of your brightness:

-- You have defiled your sanctuaries by the multitude of your iniquities, by the iniquity of your traffic;

c. Isaiah 14:12-16

-- You weakened the nations

-- You have said in your heart,

“I will ascend into heaven,

I will exalt my throne above the stars of God:

I will also sit on the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;

I will be like God, the most* High.”

3. Cast Out of Heaven

a. Satan

There was war in heaven: Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels, and did not prevail, neither was their place found any more in heaven. The great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceives the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him. Revelation 12:7-9

Jesus said, "I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven." Luke 10:18

…Therefore, I will cast you out of the mountain of God as profane:

and I will destroy you, O covering cherub, from the middle of the stones of fire.

…I will cast you to the ground, I will lay you before kings, that they may see you.

…I will bring forth a fire from the midst of you, it will devour you,

and I will burn you to ashes on the earth in the sight of all those who see you.

…All those among the people who know you will be astonished at you:

You will be a terror, and you shall never be any more. Ezekiel 28:16-19

-- How you are fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! How you are cut down to the ground, you who weaken the nations!

-- Yet you will be brought down to hell, to the sides of the pit.

-- Those who see you will look on you through narrowed eyes, and consider you,

And they will say, “Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that shook kingdoms?” Isaiah 14:12,15-16

b. One-third of the Angels

The tail of the great dragon (Satan) drew the third part of the stars (angels) of heaven, and cast them to the earth. Revelation 12:4

In the Garden of Eden

1. Satan Tempted Eve

Genesis 3:1-6

Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made.

Serpent (to the woman): Has God indeed said, "You shall not eat of every tree of the garden?" (God's Word is questioned.)

The woman (to the serpent): We may eat the fruit of the trees of the garden; but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, God has said, ‘You shall not eat it, nor shall you touch it, lest you die."

The serpent: You will not surely die. For God knows that in the day you eat of it your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. (God's Word is contradicted.)

So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food,

that it was pleasant to the eyes,

and a tree desirable to make one wise,

she took of its fruit and ate.

She also gave the fruit of the tree to her husband with her, and he ate.

Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked;

and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves coverings.

2. Eve Told God What Happened

Note: Adam and Eve were also punished for disobeying God’s word.

The woman: “The serpent deceived me, and I ate.” Genesis 3:13

3. God Punished Satan for Deceiving Eve

Lord God (to the serpent): “Because you have done this, you are cursed above all cattle, and above every beast of the field; on your belly you shall go, and you shall eat dust all the days of your life: And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her seed; it shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” Genesis 3:14-15

The God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. Acts 16:20

JOB

Gives us some remarkable information.

(Job 1:6-7, situation repeated in Job 2:1-7)

A scene in Heaven after Satan was cast out of Heaven

1. In the presence of the Lord

Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the Lord, and Satan came also among them. (1:6 and again in 2:1)

2. God and Satan discussed Job.

Satan says that God has put a hedge (of protection) around Job.

Satan: Haven't you made a hedge about him, his house and all that he has on every side. Job 1:9

3. Satan Goes “To and Fro” in the Earth

Job 1:7 (and again in Job 2:2) is a revealing statement.

The Lord (to Satan): Where do you come from?

Satan: From going to and fro in the earth, and from walking up and down in it.

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 2 Peter 5:8

Note: Before he sinned, Satan was “on the holy mountain of God,” and he “walked up and down in the middle of the stones of fire.” Ezekiel 28:14 Interesting that he did the same thing, but purpose changed.

Satan’s Powers

1. "god of This World"

In whom the god of this world (Satan) has blinded the minds of those who don’t believe, lest the light of the glorious gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. 2 Corinthians 4:4

2. “Prince of the Power of the Air”

In time past, you walked in trespasses and sins according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now works in the children of disobedience. Ephesians 2:2

3. “Power of Death”

Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he (Christ) also took part of the same (became flesh); that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil. Hebrews 2:14

4. Power and Glory of the Kingdoms of the Earth

Satan tempted Jesus in Matthew 4 and Luke 4.

Satan showed Jesus "all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.”

The devil (to Jesus): I will give you all this power and the glory of them; FOR THAT IS DELIVERED TO ME; AND TO WHOMEVER I WILL I GIVE IT." Luke 4:5-6

Note: We don't know if this is true, since Satan is speaking, and we know that he is a liar.

5. Spiritual Battles

a. Michael the archangel

Yet Michael the archangel, when contending with the devil as he disputed about the body of Moses, dared not bring a railing accusation against him, but said, The Lord rebuke you. Jude 1:9

b. David

Satan stood up against Israel and provoked David to number (“to count” HCSB) Israel. 1 Chronicles 21:1 David took a census to determine the size (and thus strength) of his army.

c. Joshua the high priest

He (an angel) showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of the Lord, and Satan standing at his right hand to resist him.

The Lord (to Satan): The Lord rebuke you, O Satan; even the Lord that has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you. Zechariah 3:1-2

d. Paul

We would have come to you, even I Paul, once and again; but Satan hindered us. 1 Thessalonians 2:18

TRAITS

1. A Liar

You are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father you will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it. John 8:44

He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning. For this purpose, the Son of God was revealed, that he might destroy the works of the devil. 1 John 3:8

In this the children of God are revealed, and the children of the devil: whoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he who does not love his brother. 1 John 3:10

2. A Thief

The thief comes only to steal, and to kill, and to destroy. John 10:10

3. Quotes God’s Word

While tempting Jesus, the devil quoted scripture.

The devil brought him (Jesus) to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here: For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over you, to keep you: And in their hands, they shall bear you up, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone. Luke 4:9-11 (also Matthew 4:5-6)

Satan in Parables

1. Parable of the Sower

Found in Mark 4:3-8

Shortly after that, Jesus explained the parable to the twelve disciples. Mark 4:14-20

And these are they by the way side, where the word is sown; but when they have heard, Satan comes immediately, and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. Mark 4:15 (... lest they should believe and be saved. Luke 8:12)

2. Parable of the Wheat and the Weeds

Later, Jesus revealed the meaning of the parable to his disciples.

He that sows the good seed is the Son of man;

The field is the world;

the good seed are the children of the kingdom;

but the weeds are the children of the wicked one;

The enemy that sowed them is the devil.

Matthew 13:37-39

Satan and Infirmity

1. Bound by Infirmity

Jesus saw a woman who had a spirit of infirmity for eighteen years and was bowed together and could in no wise lift up herself.

He healed her.

The ruler of the synagogue answered with indignation, because Jesus had healed on the sabbath day,

Jesus: Ought not this woman, being a daughter of Abraham, whom Satan has bound for eighteen years, be loosed from this bond on the sabbath day? Luke 13:11-16

2. Oppressed by Satan

Peter spoke to Cornelius and his family and friends about how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him. Acts 10:38

3. Messenger of Satan

Paul wrote, Lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 2 Corinthians 12:7

Satan and Men

1. PETER

Jesus Called Peter Satan.

Jesus began to reveal to his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, be killed and be raised again the third day.

Then Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him.

Peter (to Jesus): Be it far from you, Lord: this shall not be to you.

Jesus turned around.

Jesus (to Peter): Get behind me, Satan: you are an offense to me, because you don’t savor the things that are of God, but those things that are of men. Matthew 16:21-23

Satan Desires to Have You, Simon Peter

Jesus (to Peter): Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has desired to have you, that he may sift you like wheat. Luke 22:31

2. JUDAS

The supper (in Bethany) being ended, the devil put into the heart of Judas Iscariot, to betray Jesus. John 13:2 and Luke 22:3

After the sop (at the Last Supper) Satan entered into Judas. John 13:27

3. ANANIAS

Peter asked Ananias, “Why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Ghost and to keep back part of the price of the land? Acts 5:3

4. PAUL

In Caesarea, Paul testified to King Agrippa about his experience on the road to Damascus.

Paul said he saw a light, brighter than the sun, and he heard a voice.

The voice: ...I am Jesus, whom you persecute...

I now send you to the Gentiles to open their eyes

and to turn them from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God,

that they may receive forgiveness of sins

and inheritance among those who are sanctified by faith that is in me.

5. Child of Satan

Paul (to Elymas the sorcerer): O full of all subtilty and all mischief, you child of the devil, you enemy of all righteousness, will you not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? Acts 13:10

How Satan Works

1. Deceives Us

But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtlety, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 2 Corinthians 11:3

2. Advantage and Devices

When writing to the Corinthians about the need to forgive others, Paul wrote, "Lest Satan should get an advantage of us: for we are not ignorant of his devices.” 2 Corinthians 2:11

3. Tempts You

Paul wrote to couples, "Don’t cheat one another, except it be with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again, so that Satan does not tempt you for your incontinency." 1 Corinthian 7:5

Paul meant "Do not deprive one another sexually — except when you agree for a time, to devote yourselves to prayer. Then come together again; otherwise, Satan may tempt you because of your lack of self-control." (HCSB)

4. Transforms

For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 2 Corinthians 1:11-12

5. The Snare of the Devil

a. Pride

Paul wrote: Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover he must have a good report of them which are outside the faith; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil. 1 Timothy 3:6-7

b. Commits sin

He that commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil. ...In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loves not his brother.

6. Accuser of Our Brethren.

In Revelation 12:10, Satan is called "the accuser of our brethren."

Instructions in Regard to the Devil

1. Don’t give place to the devil. Ephesians 4:27

2. Whole Armor

Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. Ephesians 6:11

3. Shield of Faith

Above all, taking the shield of faith, with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. Ephesians 6:16

4. Meekness

In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God perhaps will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will. 2 Timothy 2:25-26

5. Sober and Vigilant

Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil walks about like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. 1 Peter 5:8

Satan's Fate

1. Bruised

The God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. Romans 16:20

2. Consumed

Then that Wicked will be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming: Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders. 2 Thessalonians 2:8-9

3. A Thousand Years

JESUS laid hold on the dragon, that old serpent, which is the Devil, and Satan, and bound him a thousand years, and cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, that he should deceive the nations no more, till the thousand years should be fulfilled: and after that he must be loosed a little season. Revelation 20:2-3

4. After a Thousand Years

When the thousand years are expired, Satan shall be loosed out of his prison and shall go out to deceive the nations which are in the four quarters of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle: the number of whom is as the sand of the sea. And they went up on the breadth of the earth, and compassed the camp of the saints about, and the beloved city: and fire came down from God out of heaven, and devoured them. Revelation 20:7-9

5. Lake of Fire

a. And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever. Revelation 20:10

b. Depart from me, you cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels. Matthew 25:41
