Summary: The old King Saul model offered contempt followed with with complete disobedience...

The Anointing Revealed.

1 Samuel 16:10-14NKJV

The time had come for new leadership. The old King Saul model offered contempt followed with with complete disobedience. Doing what feels good, what’s convenient.

Therefore, the old extinguished, or put out, in exchange for God’s newness to shine upon this young shepherd boy named David. Thus, this word from Samuel would change the spiritual climate of Israel shortly.

Actually it all got underway on this day—

1 Samuel 16:10-14NKJV Thus Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel. And Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen these.” 11 And Samuel said to Jesse, “Are all the young men here?” Then he said, “There remains yet the youngest, and there he is, keeping the sheep.” And Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and bring him. For we will not sit down till he comes here.” 12 So he sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, with bright eyes, and good-looking. And the Lord said, “Arise, anoint him; for this is the one!” 13 Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the midst of his brothers; and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel arose and went to Ramah. 14 But the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul, and a distressing spirit from the Lord troubled him.

David's anointing was a secret anointing. Only 10 people knew about his anointing: Samuel, Jesse (David’s father), David’s seven brothers, and David himself.

A highly dangerous ritual had taken place, Samuel had anointed Israel's next king while the present king was alive. Nobody else was to know about this for several years.

Sometimes the anointing on your life (God’s spirit on your life) seems to be somewhat of a secret until His spirit is pressed upon!

You become needy. Sometimes miserable. Maybe an emergency, and other times a great awakening! P.H

However—this anointing will change everything. John 14:16, 14:26, I John 2:20.

1 Samuel 13:14 say’s, The Lord sought for a man after His own heart; He found that in David.

God’s say’s in, Jeremiah 29:13NIV You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

This anointing was an anointing that David had not sought. He had been tending sheep, when out of the blue, he was summoned to be anointed King of Israel.

This event must have been overwhelming for the young David. David was earmarked by God, He was called and commissioned by God to be Israel’s future leader. P.H

* From forgotten shepherd boy, too King of Israel, that’s exactly what God’s anointing can and will do!

David’s next assignment came before him. Saul’s torment increased:

1 Samuel 16:18NLT One of the servants said to Saul, “One of Jesse’s sons from Bethlehem is a talented harp player. Not only that—he is a brave warrior, a man of war, and has good judgment. He is also a fine-looking young man, and the Lord is with him.”

While tending sheep, David developed certain gifts and talents that would prove beneficial. His secret anointing came with harp in hand, thus, driving away evil spirit’s from King Saul.

Remember this, David had lived in dark places, as a shepherd, such as caves, and three sided landscapes where David himself, would lay down at night to protect his sheep at the lip of the entrance.

David was gifted as a musician, he learned who to worship, plus he became a warrior who triumphed.

Listen to this word—Worship runs parallel with triumph.

King David would pen verses like—Psalm 18:29NKJV For by You I can run against a troop, By my God I can leap over a wall.

Psalm 18:29NLT In your strength I can crush an army; with my God I can scale any wall.

Psalm 92:4AMP For You, O Lord, have made me glad by Your works; At the works of Your hands I joyfully sing.

Have we learned to joyfully sing? “Through Jesus, your song becomes your triumph.”

Nothing was known about the anointing on David, although this anointing would prepare him for his ultimate calling, earlier though, he was brought to play for king Saul, who immediately liked David.

1 Samuel 16:23NLT And whenever the tormenting spirit from God troubled Saul, David would play the harp. Then Saul would feel better, and the tormenting spirit would go away.

This was David’s first opportunity to perform in the royal service.

Little did David know that one day he would transform worship in Israel. That David would become the major contributor of the longest book of the Bible—the book of Psalms.

During this time, On two separate occasions after this grand anointing by Samuel the prophet, Young David defended his sheep, once killing a bear, and sometime later, David fought off and killed—a loin.

The anointing of God gives a believer supernatural strength.

Of course, David penned and most likely sung Psalm 23, personally for me, this chapter produces—God’s strength.

Psalm 23:1-6AMP The Lord is my Shepherd [to feed, to guide and to shield me], I shall not want. 2 He lets me lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still and quiet waters. 3 He refreshes and restores my soul (life); He leads me in the paths of righteousness for His name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the [sunless] valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod [to protect] and Your staff [to guide], they comfort and console me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You have anointed and refreshed my head with oil; My cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and mercy and unfailing love shall follow me all the days of my life, And I shall dwell forever [throughout all my days] in the house and in the presence of the Lord.

Once again, God was preparing David for the future. The Lord spoke this simple word to me, “Howard, my Sons and Daughters future looks bright with Me leading their way.”

The anointing of God travels from strength to strength. Playing the harp before Saul was a small test.

Jesus states in—Luke 16:10NKJV He who is faithful in what is least is faithful also in much; and he who is unjust in what is least is unjust also in much.

You may think that the word—much that follows the least means we have arrived.

However, that word ‘much’ may lead you into an era of long preparation, remember this, long periods of time following the Lord will lead you into a much greater anointing! P.H

RT Kendall wrote, The most important kind of preparation in any situation is spiritual preparation.

Like you, David was spiritually prepared for his next obstacle, this would be Goliath and the Philistines.

This giant named Goliath was over nine feet tall, he was a trained killer, he was known for his great human executions.

Goliath—He was no novice, time and time again Goliath fought, killed and cut up human flesh to feed the birds of the air. It was part of Goliath’s ritual; part of his professional feast.

1 Samuel 17:41-51NLT Goliath walked out toward David with his shield bearer ahead of him, 42 sneering in contempt at this ruddy-faced boy. 43 “Am I a dog,” he roared at David, “that you come at me with a stick?” And he cursed David by the names of his gods. 44 “Come over here, and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and wild animals!” Goliath yelled.

45 David replied to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword, spear, and javelin, but I come to you in the name of the Lord of Heaven’s Armies—the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 Today the Lord will conquer you, and I will kill you and cut off your head. And then I will give the dead bodies of your men to the birds and wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel! 47 And everyone assembled here will know that the Lord rescues his people, but not with sword and spear. This is the Lord’s battle, and he will give you to us!”

48 As Goliath moved closer to attack, David quickly ran out to meet him. 49 Reaching into his shepherd’s bag and taking out a stone, he hurled it with his sling and hit the Philistine in the forehead. The stone sank in, and Goliath stumbled and fell face down on the ground.

50 So David triumphed over the Philistine with only a sling and a stone, for he had no sword. 51 Then David ran over and pulled Goliath’s sword from its sheath. David used it to kill him and cut off his head.

The anointing of God will give you the ability to face, speak over, and slay, every giant!

It’s time to cut some heads off of little-god- giants.

Fear

Bitterness

Un-forgiveness

Loss of vision and purpose for life

Discouragement—Life hurts.

Lack of passion. Redundant days and months, maybe years.

1 Samuel 17:51-58NLT When the Philistines saw that their champion was dead, they turned and ran. 52 Then the men of Israel and Judah gave a great shout of triumph and rushed after the Philistines, chasing them as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron. The bodies of the dead and wounded Philistines were strewn all along the road from Shaaraim, as far as Gath and Ekron. 53 Then the Israelite army returned and plundered the deserted Philistine camp. 54 (David took the Philistine’s head to Jerusalem, but he stored the man’s armor in his own tent.)

55 As Saul watched David go out to fight the Philistine, he asked Abner, the commander of his army, “Abner, whose son is this young man?”

“I really don’t know,” Abner declared.

56 “Well, find out who he is!” the king told him.

57 As soon as David returned from killing Goliath, Abner brought him to Saul with the Philistine’s head still in his hand. 58 “Tell me about your father, young man,” Saul said.

And David replied, “His name is Jesse, and we live in Bethlehem.”

The anointing shall be revealed through you as you continue to follow Jesus, and His teachings.

The anointing desires to lead you, will you ask Him? P.H

Benediction.
