Summary: With the dawning of a new year the universal cry of HAPPY NEW YEAR rings out! What will your hope and confidence of the New Year be founded upon? May I encourage you to establish them on the certainties of Psalm 110!

Intro: With the dawning of a new year comes a universal cry that is heard in every language – HAPPY NEW YEAR! The thought is may you experience a happy, healthy, better year than the year before!

But the question that I would like to ask is, what will be the basis upon you build that “wish”?

Simply on the basis that you turned a page on a calendar to a new year?

The bible says something interesting about years that may surprise you!

2 Peter 3:8 But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. =NIV

Psalm 90: 4 A thousand years in your sight are like a day that has just gone by, or like a watch in the night.

With the Lord a thousand years is like a watch in the night, which is a 3-4 hour period!!

Point? Heaven is not moved at all with the dawning of a new year! So my question is what will be the source of your confidence for the coming year?

The bible tells us that we are living in the last days, a time of great peril!

The Apostle Paul wrote…

2 Timothy 3 (AMPC)

1 But understand this, that in the last days will come (set in) perilous times of great stress and trouble [hard to deal with and hard to bear].

2 Timothy 3: 2 For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, 3 Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, 4 Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; 5 Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away.-KJV

The point is that the scripture does not paint a very promising picture of the last days, ie. The days that we are living in. Yes, Peter announced that it would be a time of God outpouring His Spirit:

Acts 2:5 These people are not drunk, as you suppose. It’s only nine in the morning! 16 No, this is what was spoken by the prophet Joel: 17a “‘In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people.

That is a good thing, but read on…that’s not all…

Acts 2: 19 I will show wonders in the heavens above

and signs on the earth below,

blood and fire and billows of smoke.

20 The sun will be turned to darkness

and the moon to blood

before the coming of the great and glorious day of the Lord.

In light of all that is potentially awaiting us in the coming year, good and bad, I would like to invite you to place your confidence in what I’ve entitled my message after:

Title: The Certainties of the 110th Psalm!

I’d like to make a proposition to you this morning form this Psalm and it is this:

Proposition: That a study of the certainties found contained in 110th Psalm will give us a rock-solid, immovable, unassailable, eternal basis upon which we can face the New Year with an unshakable confidence!

And let’s begin where this Psalm begins…

Psalm 110:1a A Psalm of David. The LORD ….

What should be the basis our confidence in the year 2021?

I. The PERSON of the 110th Psalm!

A) Person?

1. The LORD -??????? ? (Yah·weh) - Hebrew

a) 'The Existing One'

b) The proper name of the one true God

Psalm 110:1b says to my Lord:

2. My Lord – ??????- ä·don' - Adonai

a) Master. Owner, Ruler, Husband

b) Someone in a position of ownership and authority

B) Perspective?

1. Our confidence should be based on the conversation between the two LORDS - Lords!

2. Two Persons who are One the scripture says!

Deuteronomy 6:4 "Hear, O Israel! The LORD is our God, the LORD is one! -NASB

a) One in essence, and nature.

3. The LORD (Yahweh) said to my Adonai (Lord)….

4. The Father said to The Son…

C) Point?

1. The basis of a Christians confidence?

a) Jesus said:

John 10: 28 “I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. 30 I and the Father are one.”

2. Our confidence should be based on the CERTAINTY that the LORD and my Lord are One!

a) Giving us a Double Sense of Security!

b) AND THAT WE ARE HELD SECURELY IN TWO OMNIPOTENT HANDS!

c) Devotional:

Believers Need not Fear that They Shall Perish-A man crossed the Mississippi on the ice, and fearing it was too thin, began to crawl on his hands and knees in great terror; but when he gained the opposite shore, all worn out, another man drove past him gaily, sitting upon a sledge loaded with pig iron. That is just the way most Christians go up to the heavenly Canaan, trembling at every step lest the promises shall break under their feet, when really they are secure enough for us to hold our heads and sing with confidence as we march to the better land.

Wisdom of Solomon 3:1"But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment touch them.''

Our confidence should also be based secondly on…

II. His POSITION within the 110th Psalm!

Or better said…

A) Person

1. Lord (Adonai)

a) Who occupies a…

B) Position!

Psalm 110:1c "Sit at My right hand…..

B) Position?

1. The Right Hand of God!

C) Perspective?

1. To sit at his right hand means to sit in the place of the highest honor!

2. To sit in a place of shared authority and power!

3. To sit at his right hand means to sit in the position of preeminence!

4. TO SIT AS A – KING!

a) Ruling Monarch!

D) Point?

Psalm 29:10 The Lord sitteth upon the flood; yea, the Lord sitteth King for ever.

1. Sitting has to do with POSITON more than POSTURE!

2. Jesus is seated in the Highest Place therefore He is in the position of the Highest Authority and Power!

Philippians 2 (NIV)

6 Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;

7 rather, he made himself nothing

by taking the very nature of a servant,

being made in human likeness.

8 And being found in appearance as a man,

he humbled himself

by becoming obedient to death—

even death on a cross!

9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place

and gave him the name that is above every name,

10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,

in heaven and on earth and under the earth,

11 and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord,

to the glory of God the Father.

E) My Prayer?

Ephesians 1: 18 I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, 19 and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength 20 he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, 21 far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.-NIV

2. Being seated at the right hand of God means that He shares God’s strength, authority, and blessing.

a) It is the highest place and the highest honor possible!

b) It means all other things and other beings are under Him.

1 Peter 3:22 Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers having been subjected to Him.

3. Right hand is a picture of ULTIMATE POWER!

Exodus 15:6 Your right hand, LORD, was majestic in power. Your right hand, LORD, shattered the enemy.

Exodus 15:12 “You stretch out your right hand, and the earth swallows your enemies.

Psalm 20:6 Now this I know: The LORD gives victory to his anointed. He answers him from his heavenly sanctuary with the victorious power of his right hand.

Psalm 18:35 You make your saving help my shield, and your right hand sustains me; your help has made me great.

Psalm 17:7Show me the wonders of your great love, you who save by your right hand those who take refuge in you from their foes.

Psalm 63:8 I cling to you; your right hand upholds me.

Psalm 138:7 Though I walk in the midst of trouble, you preserve my life. You stretch out your hand against the anger of my foes; with your right hand you save me.

4. The RIGHT HAND is a picture of HIS DIVINE PROTECTION and DELIVERANCE over our lives!

Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.

E) Provision?

1. Also it portrays a provision!

a) Power and..

Hebrews 1:3 The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven.

b) Permanent purification for our sin – ETERNAL FORGIVENESS!

i.What if I fall and fail?

Romans 8:34 Who then is the one who condemns? No one. Christ Jesus who died—more than that, who was raised to life—is at the right hand of God and is also interceding for us.

Hebrews 10:12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God

c) There was but the one offering for sin – given once for all.

d) But the intercession for us in the heavens is ever continuing!

e) Therefore we can never be separated from the love of God in Christ.

f) He continually intercedes only for those who come unto God through Him!

g) And not only that…

h) The word intercession (entugchano) carries with it not only the idea of intercession but intervention!

1Corithians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

F) OUR POSITION?

1. As a result of being in Christ?

Ephesians 2: 4 But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, 5 made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved. 6 And God raised us up with Christ and seated us with him in the heavenly realms in Christ Jesus

Colossians 3:1 Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God.

a) Even though we don't sit in the heavenly places with Christ Jesus yet, we do sit in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus now!

i. How?

Colossians 3: 3 For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God.

b) Since our life and identity is in Christ, as He sits in the heavenly places, so do you!

G) Power it affords us?

Dr. Bruce Hurst –The practical import of our new position as recipients of grace is that our "heavenly status" gives us "heavenly power" to overcome the power of sin and death -Daily! Our unbreakable union with Christ affords us eternal access to the heavenly places and His heavenly power (every spiritual blessing in the heavenly place is ours in Christ - Eph 1:3-note) which allows us to live as more than conquerors through Him Who loved us and continues to love us, even when we are not very "lovable!"

Albert Barnes-And made us sit together with him. That is, we share his honors. So close is our connection with him, that we shall partake of his glory, and in some measure do now

Albert Barnes- The meaning is, that he has gone to the heavenly world as our Head and Representative. His entrance there is a pledge that we shall also enter there. In Christ Jesus - It is in connection with him that we are thus exalted, and thus filled with joy and peace.

Dr. Bruce Hurst –Seated with Christ is our present positional reality, even though it is not yet fully realized eschatology.

Which leads me to the next point my confidence is not only is a Person, but also…

III. The PROPHECY within the 110th Psalm!

Rev 19:10b The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”

Psalm 110:1c Until I make Your enemies a footstool for Your feet."

A) Perspective?

1. We are presently living in the -UNTIL!

a) And we experience problem in the -UNTIL!

b) Jesus said in:

John 16: 33 I have told you these things, so that in Me you may have [perfect] peace and confidence. In the world you have tribulation and trials and distress and frustration; but be of good cheer [take courage; be confident, certain, undaunted]! For I have overcome the world. [I have deprived it of power to harm you and have conquered it for you.] -AMPC

i. How?

ii. When?

B) Prophecy?

Mark 14:61b The high priest asked him, “Are you the Messiah, the Son of the Blessed One?” 62 “I am,” said Jesus. “And you will see the Son of Man sitting at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”

Matthew 25:31 “When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. -NIV

Revelation 1:7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,” and “every eye will see him, even those who pierced him”; and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.” So shall it be! Amen.

C) Point?

Romans 16:20 The God of peace will soon crush Satan under your feet. The grace of our Lord Jesus be with you.

1 Corinthians 15: 24 Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power. 25 For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet. 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death. – NIV

Charles Spurgeon - During the present interval, through which we wait for his glorious appearing and visible millennial kingdom, he is in the place of power…He sits because all is safe, and he sits at Yahweh’s right hand because omnipotence waits to accomplish his will. Therefore there is no cause for alarm whatever may happen in this lower world; the sight of Jesus enthroned in divine glory is the sure guarantee that all things are moving onward towards ultimate victory. Those rebels who now stand high in power shall soon be in the place of contempt, they shall be his footstool.

D) Picture:

Joshua 10: 22 Joshua said, “Open the mouth of the cave and bring those five kings out to me.” 23 So they brought the five kings out of the cave—the kings of Jerusalem, Hebron, Jarmuth, Lachish and Eglon. 24 When they had brought these kings to Joshua, he summoned all the men of Israel and said to the army commanders who had come with him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So they came forward and placed their feet on their necks. 25 Joshua said to them, “Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Be strong and courageous. This is what the Lord will do to all the enemies you are going to fight.” 26 Then Joshua put the kings to death and exposed their bodies on five poles, and they were left hanging on the poles until evening.

E) Posture?

1. Redeemed?

a) Notice the pronouns – them, their,

Hebrews 2:6b “What is mankind that you are mindful of them,

a son of man that you care for him?

7 You made them a little lower than the angels;

you crowned them with glory and honor

8 and put everything under their feet.”

In putting everything under them, God left nothing that is not subject to them. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to them. 9 But we do see Jesus, who was made lower than the angels for a little while, now crowned with glory and honor…

b) We will rule and reign with Christ someday!

2 Timothy 2:11 Here is a trustworthy saying: If we died with him, we will also live with him;

12a if we endure, we will also reign with him.

F) Perspective?

1. How do we live in the -UNTIL?

Hebrews 12:2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.-NIV

Richard Phillips - I often call this "the all-purpose Christian advice." I say this because there is no circumstance, no difficulty, no temptation for which this is not a reliable guide: "looking to Jesus." This is the "secret" of the Christian life, the encouragement we need for our faith: to place our eyes not on the world with its enticements and threats, not even on ourselves with our petty successes and many failures, but on him who is the source and fountain of all our spiritual vigor.

2. Peter learned that lesson in Matthew 14!

Matthew 14:22 Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat and go on ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd.

Matthew 14:24 and the boat was already a considerable distance from land, buffeted by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. 27 But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” 28 “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” 29 “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” 31 Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” -NIV

a) Some storms come because of our disobedience, but this one came because the disciples obeyed Jesus.

b) Peter obeyed Jesus' command and walked on the water; but became distracted by the waves, and took his eyes off Jesus.

c) We too in the coming year need to be aware of the distracting, disturbing “storms” of that we are certain to come our way in this fallen world!

d) Instead of “fixating” on them, we need to keep our eyes continually focused on the One Who controls the "wind and the waves" and is able to calm the storm!

My confidence also comes not only in the Person of the Psalm, and the ty from the cor ene also

IV. The PLACE of the 110th Psalm!

Psalm 110:2a The LORD will stretch forth Your strong scepter…

A) Scepter?

1, ?????????? -sharbiyt

a) Symbol of one’s might and right to rule!

B) Place?

Psalm 110:2a The LORD will stretch forth Your strong scepter…

Psalm 110:2b from Zion!

1. Zion - ??????????? (mi?·?î·yo·wn)

a) Another name for Jerusalem especially in the prophetic books

Romans 11:26 and in this way all Israel will be saved. As it is written: “The deliverer will come from Zion; he will turn godlessness away from Jacob.

Hebrews 12:22 But you have come to Mount Zion, to the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerusalem. You have come to thousands upon thousands of angels in joyful assembly,

b) In the New Testament, Mount Zion is used metaphorically to refer to the heavenly Jerusalem, God's holy, eternal city.

Galatians 4:26a But the Jerusalem that is above

Revelation 14:1 Then I looked, and there before me was the Lamb, standing on Mount Zion, and with him 144,000 who had his name and his Father’s name written on their foreheads.

Revelation 21: 1 Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband.

Revelation 21: 10 And he carried me away in the Spirit to a mountain great and high, and showed me the Holy City, Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God. 11 It shone with the glory of God,

c) The City of God, the Headquarters of Heaven is where our King is seated!

Psalm 50

A psalm of Asaph.

1 The Mighty One, God, the Lord,

speaks and summons the earth

from the rising of the sun to where it sets.

2 From Zion, perfect in beauty,

God shines forth.

3 Our God comes

and will not be silent;

a fire devours before him,

and around him a tempest rages.

4 He summons the heavens above,

and the earth, that he may judge his people:

5 “Gather to me this consecrated people,

who made a covenant with me by sacrifice.”

6 And the heavens proclaim his righteousness,

for he is a God of justice.

Psalm 2 (ESV)

1 Why do the nations rage

and the peoples plot in vain?

2 The kings of the earth set themselves,

and the rulers take counsel together,

against the Lord and against his Anointed, saying,

3 “Let us burst their bonds apart

and cast away their cords from us.”

4 He who sits in the heavens laughs;

the Lord holds them in derision.

5 Then he will speak to them in his wrath,

and terrify them in his fury, saying,

6 “As for me, I have set my King

on Zion, my holy hill.”

7 I will tell of the decree:

The Lord said to me, “You are my Son;

today I have begotten you.

8 Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage,

and the ends of the earth your possession.

9 You shall break them with a rod of iron

and dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel.”

10 Now therefore, O kings, be wise;

be warned, O rulers of the earth.

11 Serve the Lord with fear,

and rejoice with trembling.

12 Kiss the Son,

lest he be angry, and you perish in the way,

for his wrath is quickly kindled.

Blessed are all who take refuge in him.

Daniel 4: 25 You will be driven away from people and will live with the wild animals; you will eat grass like the ox and be drenched with the dew of heaven. Seven times will pass by for you until you acknowledge that the Most High is sovereign over all kingdoms on earth and gives them to anyone he wishes. 26 The command to leave the stump of the tree with its roots means that your kingdom will be restored to you when you acknowledge that Heaven rules. -NIV

C) Podcast – that I recently listened to made the point wonderfully:

Nancy Demoss Wolgemuth - Revive Our Hearts Podcast -Coronavirus; Cancer and Christ. December 28, 2020

Dannah Gresh- Do the current circumstances make you feel like you might lose your sanity?

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth- Heaven rules, and knowing and believing and reminding yourself of this reality—heaven rules—is what will keep you from going crazy in a broken, fallen, and messed-up world.

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth - Speaking of these times, our world is convulsing. I think we can all feel that. Our world, no matter whether we’re married or single, young or old, healthy or sick, wherever we live around the world, our world has been turned upside down and inside out.

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth - You may have seen a meme out there that’s on the Internet, and it says something like this: “It’s like our lives are being written by an eight-year-old: There was this virus, and everybody had to go home for the longest spring break ever, and then they closed the school for the rest of the year, and then it snowed, and everybody ran out of toilet paper. Oh, no! And then suddenly some giant killer bees swarmed in.

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth Well, as my sweet husband Robert often says, “You can’t make this stuff up.” A friend wrote me this week, and she said, “This is absolutely bananas, and now murder hornets? What is this life? What is happening?”

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth -Well, what’s happening is there’s a lot of craziness going on—a lot of things we understand and even more things that we don’t understand. People are feeling isolated. They’re feeling thrown off their rhythms. Everything is unfamiliar. And then you see these eerie pictures of people in masks and gloves and HAZMAT suits. Could you even have imagined these kinds of scenes just a few months ago? Something is just not right. The fact is, that in this broken, fallen world, nothing is really right.

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth –There are two words that Robert and I say to each other over and over and over again. I suppose we’ve said them maybe hundreds of times, maybe thousands of times, in the years we’ve been married. The two words, which would be one way of summarizing the whole of Scripture are: heaven rules. Heaven rules. You’ve seen me put this on social media posts, on tweets, on emails. I tell myself and I tell others over and over and over again, “heaven rules.” Christ sits as King

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth – I have that reminder in front of me all the time. And Robert and I say it to each other after we watch the evening news, which there are times when we just have to say, “No more of that.” But after we watch it, we look at each other, and we say, “Honey, Heaven rules—heaven rules.”

Nancy DeMoss Wolgemuth – As we got Robert’s cancer diagnosis, we looked at each other, and we said, “heaven rules.” Now, that’s not all we said. We talked about the realities, about the unknowns, about the what-ifs, about our natural human fears and what might happen, could happen. We talked about those things. But at the end of the day, we keep coming back to “heaven rules.” Cancer is not king. Coronavirus is not king. Financial crisis is not king. These things are very real. They may happen… But cancer is not king. Coronavirus is not king. Locusts are not king. Christ is King.

And he is told in Psalm 110….

Psalm 110:2b saying, "Rule in the midst of Your enemies.

And what gives me great confidence in 2021 is the reference to…

V. The PEOPLE mentioned within the 110th Psalm!

A) People?

1. Who?

Psalm 110:3a Your people …..

a) The Lord’s people!

i. US!

ii. How does he see us?

Deuteronomy 32:9 For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.

B) His Portion! PTL!

1. His children!!

Hebrews 2:13b “Here am I, and the children God has given me.”

2. His brothers!!

Hebrews 2:12 saying, “I will proclaim Your name to My brothers, In the midst of the assembly I will sing Your praise.”

John 20:17 Jesus said, “Do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’

3. Best of all – HIS BRIDE!!!

Revelation 19:6b “Hallelujah!

For our Lord God Almighty reigns.

7 Let us rejoice and be glad

and give him glory!

For the wedding of the Lamb has come,

and his bride has made herself ready.

8 Fine linen, bright and clean,

was given her to wear.”

But listen to this persepctive of the wedding dress…….

a) What does the Wedding Dress symbolize?

C) Picture?

1. After the Wedding Banquet, the Wedding Dress is depicted as a garment of War!

a) A soldier’s uniform!!

Psalm 110:3b They will volunteer freely in the day of Your power; In holy array,

2. It is a volunteer army!

3. Eager to go the war with and for their Lord!!

Revelation 19: 11 I saw heaven standing open and there before me was a white horse, whose rider is called Faithful and True. With justice he judges and wages war. 12 His eyes are like blazing fire, and on his head are many crowns. He has a name written on him that no one knows but he himself. 13 He is dressed in a robe dipped in blood, and his name is the Word of God. 14 The armies of heaven were following him, riding on white horses and dressed in fine linen, white and clean.

Revelation 19:15 Coming out of his mouth is a sharp sword with which to strike down the nations. “He will rule them with an iron scepter.” He treads the winepress of the fury of the wrath of God Almighty. 16 On his robe and on his thigh he has this name written: king of kings and lord of lords.

17 And I saw an angel standing in the sun, who cried in a loud voice to all the birds flying in midair, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God, 18 so that you may eat the flesh of kings, generals, and the mighty, of horses and their riders, and the flesh of all people, free and slave, great and small.”

D) Point?

1. Regarding the people of Psalm 110?

2. A Christian is a Solider!

Philippians 2:25 But I think it is necessary to send back to you Epaphroditus, my brother, co-worker and fellow soldier, who is also your messenger, whom you sent to take care of my needs.

2 Timothy 2:3 Join with me in suffering, like a good soldier of Christ Jesus.

3. Unfortunately many are - AWOL! “absent without leave [permission].”

E) Poem - I AM A SOLDIER

I am a soldier in the army of my God.

The Lord Jesus Christ is my Commanding Officer.

The Holy Scripture is my code of conduct.

Faith, prayer and the Word are my weapons of warfare.

I have been taught by the Holy Spirit, trained by experience,

tried by adversity and tested by fire.

I am a volunteer in this army, and I am enlisted for eternity.

I will not get out, sell out, be talked out or pushed out.

I am faithful, reliable, capable and dependable.

If my God needs me, I am there. I am a soldier.

I am not a baby. I do not need to be pampered, petted,

primed up, pumped up, picked up, or pepped up. I am a soldier.

No one has to call me, remind me, write me, visit me, entice me or lure me.

I am a soldier. I am not a wimp. I am in place, saluting my King,

obeying His orders, praising His name and building His kingdom!

No one has to send me flowers, gifts, food, cards or candy, or give

me handouts. I do not need to be cuddled, cradled, cared for or

catered to. I am committed. I cannot have my feelings hurt bad

enough to turn me around. I cannot be discouraged enough to

turn me aside. I cannot lose enough to cause me to quit.

When Jesus called me into this army, I had nothing. If I end up with nothing,

I will still come out ahead. I will win. My God has and will continue to supply all of my need.

I am more than a conqueror. I will always triumph. I can do all things through Christ.

The devil cannot defeat me. People cannot disillusion me. Weather cannot weary me.

Sickness cannot stop me. Battles cannot beat me. Money cannot buy me. Governments

cannot silence me, and hell cannot handle me. I am a soldier.

Even death cannot destroy me. For when my Commander calls me from His battlefield,

He will promote me to captain and then allow me to rule with Him.

I am a soldier in the army, and I’m marching claiming victory.

I will not give up. I will not turn around.

I am a soldier, marching heaven-bound.

Here I Stand! Will you stand with me?

My confidence is also based on…

VI. The PROMISE within Psalm 110.

PSALM 110:4a The LORD has sworn

A) Picture?

1. Sworn – ?????? -shä·vah'

a) Given a solemn oath!

PSALM 110:4b and will not change His mind,

Numbers 23:19 God is not man, that he should lie,or a son of man, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not do it? Or has he spoken, and will he not fulfill it?

B) Promise

1. Have to do with?

a) Something AMAZING!

VII. The PRIESTHOOD within Psalm 110.

Psalm 110:4b "You are a priest forever….

A) Permanent!

B) Pattern?

Psalm 110:4c According to the order of Melchizedek."

1. Melchizedek the Mystery Man?

a) Mean?

Genesis 14:11 The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away. 12 They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

Genesis 14: 17 After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley). 18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. He was priest of God Most High, 19 and he blessed Abram, saying,

“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,

Creator of heaven and earth.

20 And praise be to God Most High,

who delivered your enemies into your hand.” Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

C) Point?

Hebrews 5:1 Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins.

Hebrews 5: 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was. 5 In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” 6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

Hebrews 7: 1 This Melchizedek was king of Salem and priest of God Most High. He met Abraham returning from the defeat of the kings and blessed him,

D) Principle?

1. NO ONE IN THE OLD TESTAMENT COULD OPERATE AS BOTH- TOTALLY FORBIDDEN!

a) Uzziah

2 Chronicles 26: 3 Uzziah was sixteen years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem fifty-two years. His mother’s name was Jekoliah; she was from Jerusalem. 4 He did what was right in the eyes of the Lord, just as his father Amaziah had done.

b) Until he did something forbidden for kings to do!

2 Chronicles 26: 6 But after Uzziah became powerful, his pride led to his downfall. He was unfaithful to the Lord his God, and entered the temple of the Lord to burn incense on the altar of incense. 17 Azariah the priest with eighty other courageous priests of the Lord followed him in. 18 They confronted King Uzziah and said, “It is not right for you, Uzziah, to burn incense to the Lord. That is for the priests, the descendants of Aaron, who have been consecrated to burn incense. Leave the sanctuary, for you have been unfaithful; and you will not be honored by the Lord God.”

2 Chronicles 26: 19 Uzziah, who had a censer in his hand ready to burn incense, became angry. While he was raging at the priests in their presence before the incense altar in the Lord’s temple, leprosy broke out on his forehead. 20 When Azariah the chief priest and all the other priests looked at him, they saw that he had leprosy on his forehead, so they hurried him out. Indeed, he himself was eager to leave, because the Lord had afflicted him.

21 King Uzziah had leprosy until the day he died. He lived in a separate house—leprous, and banned from the temple of the Lord.

E) Point?

Hebrews 7: 11a If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood—(Aaron and his descendants)

Hebrews 7: 11 c—why was there still need for another priest to come, one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? 12 For when the priesthood is changed, the law must be changed also.

1. Why change?

a) Aaron and his descendant’s – DIED!

Hebrews 7:8b [in the Levitical priesthood] tithes are received by men who are subject to death; while there [in the case of Melchizedek], they are received by one of whom it is testified that he lives [perpetually]. -AMPC

Hebrews 7:23 Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24 but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25 Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.

D) Picture?

1. Melchizedek is a picture of Jesus Christ – who is both KING and PRIEST!

a) As Priest – He is an Advocate for his people!

i. He lives to make intercession for them!

b) As King- He is pictured as an Adversary to his enemies!

VIII. HIS POWER in the 110th Psalm?

Psalm 110:5a The Lord is at Your right hand;

A) Perspective?

1. Right Hand = Position of Supreme Power?

Psalm 110:5b He will shatter kings in the day of His wrath.

Isaiah 60:12 For the nation or kingdom that will not serve you will perish; it will be utterly ruined.

Psalm 110:6a He will judge among the nations,

Psalm 110:6b He will fill them with corpses,

Isaiah 34:3 Their slain will be thrown out, their dead bodies will stink; the mountains will be soaked with their blood.

Revelation 14:14 I looked, and there before me was a white cloud, and seated on the cloud was one like a son of man with a crown of gold on his head and a sharp sickle in his hand. 15 Then another angel came out of the temple and called in a loud voice to him who was sitting on the cloud, “Take your sickle and reap, because the time to reap has come, for the harvest of the earth is ripe.” 16 So he who was seated on the cloud swung his sickle over the earth, and the earth was harvested.

Revelation 14:17 Another angel came out of the temple in heaven, and he too had a sharp sickle. 18 Still another angel, who had charge of the fire, came from the altar and called in a loud voice to him who had the sharp sickle, “Take your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the earth’s vine, because its grapes are ripe.” 19 The angel swung his sickle on the earth, gathered its grapes and threw them into the great winepress of God’s wrath. 20 They were trampled in the winepress outside the city, and blood flowed out of the press, rising as high as the horses’ bridles for a distance of 1,600 stadia.

Psalm 110:6c He will shatter the chief men (leaders) over a broad country.

Revelation 19:19 Then I saw the beast and the kings of the earth and their armies gathered together to wage war against the rider on the horse and his army. 20 But the beast was captured, and with it the false prophet who had performed the signs on its behalf. With these signs he had deluded those who had received the mark of the beast and worshiped its image. The two of them were thrown alive into the fiery lake of burning sulfur. 21 The rest were killed with the sword coming out of the mouth of the rider on the horse, and all the birds gorged themselves on their flesh.

Psalm 110:7 He will drink from the brook by the wayside; Therefore He will lift up His head.

B) Picture?

1. The victorious leader, pauses at the stream that crosses his path, refreshed himself, once refreshed lifts up head erect once more, and continues his pursuit of his foes!

Conclude: What is your confidence in this coming year? Better said, who is your confidence in in the coming year? As for me, and my prayer for you is that you would “fix your eyes” and set your hope upon:
