week 3 - The Holy Spirit

Pastor Timothy Porter

Text: John 14:26 NKJV/MSG

INTRODUCTION:

WHO IS THE HOLY SPIRIT?

God exists in three persons, but we often only hear about two: Father and Son. The Holy Spirit is the third person in the Trinity. He is God living in us!

What is the role of the Holy Spirit in the Trinity?

The Holy Spirit is equal with the Father and the Son as God.

He is present in the world to make men aware of their need for Jesus.

He also lives in every believer from the moment of salvation.

He provides Christians with power for living, understanding of spiritual truth, and guidance in doing what is right. As Christians, we seek to live under the Holy Spirit's control daily.

The Holy Spirit seems to be the most controversial person of the Trinity. Even Christians cannot agree on who He is or what He does. Is the Holy Spirit the least of the three in the Trinity, or is He the power we’re lacking in our lives? There are many misconceptions about who the Holy Spirit is, but the following are some of the most common misunderstandings Christians have about the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is not karma or a force; He's a person.

The Holy Spirit is not reserved for super Christians; He's a gift to all Christians.

The Holy Spirit does not come and go like goosebumps; He is with us always.

The Holy Spirit only does spectacular things. The Holy Spirit does many spectacular things, but He also guides and equips us for everyday interactions. Sometimes, His leading could be as simple as telling us to sit in a specific seat or to say hi to a specific person.

The Holy Spirit is extra or optional. ( I hear things like - "If I know Jesus, I've got all I need.") We can't do all that Jesus calls us to without the Holy Spirit.

Who is the Holy Spirit? – The Holy Spirit is a person.

Being a person, the Holy Spirit has feelings. He can become sad or angry, and others can insult Him and blaspheme against Him

He is A GIFT GIVER who keeps on giving - some of you have gifts you don't know you have

What Does the Holy Spirit Do?

In short, a lot.

For starters, the Holy Spirit empowers us to share the Gospel. One of the promises Jesus gives us in Scripture is that we don't have to fear sharing our faith. Even when we're not sure what to say, we can trust the Holy Spirit will bring to mind what we need when we need it.

The sad thing is this : There are so many christians walking walking around and even sitting in this and watching on-line who are defeated. Why is that?

THREE THINGS THE HOLY SPIRIT DOES FOR US

There is so many more but these are the three that stood out me as I studied this week.

1.) THE HOLY SPIRIT CONVICTS

John 8:1-11 Is the story of the woman caught in very act of adultery

We know she was married b/c she was caught...... Right? Even in the very act!

She was brought to Jesus to see what He would say in hopes He would trip up and they would have a reason to accuse him

Now check this out - This woman and these men meet the Holy Spirit face to face!

Jesues writes in sand - didn't hear them - raised up- he who is with out sin throw the 1st stone - stooped and wrot in the sand again.

Thoes who heard it was convicted by their sin dropped their stone and left one by one.

Jesus said woman. Woman where are your accusers? She says there gone. Jesus said so are your sins. Go and sin no more.

Jesus never condems us! John 3:17 (NKJV) 17 For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.

This is why sinners wanted to hang out with Jesus. He didn't condem.

[ Jesus did not hang out with sinners. They hung out with Him b/c He was so non-condemming ]

This woman is like many today - They got drug into church not to be loved and accepted but to be exposed and condemed.

We need to love and accept and leave the CONVICTING to ther HOLY SPIRIT !

YOU DON'T NEED THE PEOPLE WHO CONDEMED YOU! YOU NEED THE ONE JUDAS KISSED!

2.) THE HOLY SPIRIT SANCTIFIES US

1 Peter 1:2 (NKJV) 2 elect according to the foreknowledge of God the Father, in sanctification of the Spirit, for obedience and sprinkling of the blood of Jesus Christ: Grace to you and peace be multiplied.

i.} THE SPIRIT SANCTIFIES

sanctify - set apart as or declare holy; consecrate.

a.) He sets us apart in Christ Jesus that we might be cleanesd by his blood

b.) He works in us so we will be obedient to the SON serving , sharing, reading, giving and becoming mor like Jesus everyday

By and through SANTIFICATION we are given a new position and infused with power.

ii.} NEW POWER

This power I am speaking of in theological terms is Progressive Sanctification.

This is the way God works in for His good pleasure as we work out the life of salvation.

Philippians 2:12-13 (NKJV)

12 Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; 13 for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Romans 8:9-13 (NKJV) Puts it like this

9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His. 10 And if Christ is in you, the body is dead because of sin, but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you. 12 Therefore, brethren, we are debtors--not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. 13 For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.

So we are no longer in the flesh but in thge spirit {POSITION} so by the spirit we should put to death the deeds of the flesh {POWER}

This is not a cheep infomericial telling you to change and cheering you on to do it.

If you are saved you are sanctified and have already been changed. WE ARE A NEW CREATION! WITH A NEW STRENGTH AT WORK WITHIN US PRODUCING GOSPEL FRUIT .

THE HOLY SPIRIT EXPECTS THIS B/C HE IS IN US .

HOW EXCTLY DOES THE HOLY SPIRIT ACTIVATE AND EMPOWWER US?

3.) THE HOLY SPIRIT BAPTIZES US

Luke 3:16 (NKJV) 16 John answered, saying to all, "I indeed baptize you with water; but One mightier than I is coming, whose sandal strap I am not worthy to loose. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

THREE DIFFERENT BAPTISMS:

i.) The Holy Spirit Baptizes us in Jesus:

The spirit comes on us convicts us we open up accept Christ and the finished work of the cross. We are baptized in Jesus {the blood}

ii.) The Disciple Baptizes us in water:

iii.) Jesuse Baptizes us in the Holy Spirit :

Three are clearly 3 different baptisins in scripture:

Mark 1:8 (NKJV) 8 I indeed baptized you with water, but He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit."

Acts 8:12 (NKJV) 12 But when they believed Philip as he preached the things concerning the kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ, both men and women were baptized.

1 John 5:7-8 (NKJV) 7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

Acts 8:14-18 (NKJV)

14 Now when the apostles who were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent Peter and John to them,

15 who, when they had come down, prayed for them that they might receive the Holy Spirit.

16 For as yet He had fallen upon none of them. They had only been baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

17 Then they laid hands on them, and they received the Holy Spirit.

18 And when Simon saw that through the laying on of the apostles' hands the Holy Spirit was given, he offered them money,

This is one of the clearest examples in the book of Acts that the born-again experience and the receving of the Holy Spirit are two seperate experiences.

These people had to be saved and and belivers or Philip would not have baptized them in water.Yet, they had not received the power of the Holy Spirit.

Acts 19:6 (NKJV) 6 And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

This is very clear that the baptism of the Holy Spirit is a seperate experience from water baptism.

They are not the same thing (even though they can accompany each otheras happened here.)

TABERNACLE ON DRY BOARD

TELL THE HOLY SPIRIT "I RECEIVE YOU"

NOW JESUS

"TO BAPTIZE IN THE SPIRIT"
