1. In the last days, there will be scoffers (v. 3)
2. The scoffers will be following their own evil (sinful) desires (v. 3)
3. They will mock the promise of the coming of Jesus Christ saying “Where is the promise of His coming?” they will ask. “Ever since our fathers fell asleep, everything continues as it has from the beginning of creation.” (v. 4)
The Fact:
The scoffers “deliberately overlook the fact that long ago by God’s word the heavens existed and the earth was formed out of water and by water, through which the world of that time perished in the flood. And by that same word, the present heavens and earth are reserved for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men.” (v. 5-7)
The Truth:
1. “The Lord isn’t really being slow about his promise, as some people think. No, he is being patient for your sake. He does not want anyone to be destroyed, but wants everyone to repent.” (v. 9)
2. This is because “But you must not forget this one thing, dear friends: A day is like a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years is like a day.” (v. 8)
3. But the day of the Lord will come as unexpectedly as a thief.
a. Then the heavens will pass away with a terrible noise,
b. and the very elements themselves will disappear in fire,
c. and the earth and everything on it will be found to deserve judgment. (v.10)
Action:
Since you now know the truth that Christ is coming and everything here on earth is reserved for fire,
1. Let us live godly lives (v. 11)
2. Let us look forward to the day of His coming (v. 12)
3. Let us look forward to a new heaven – a world filled with God’s righteousness (13)
While you are waiting:
1. Make “make every effort to be found living peaceful lives that are pure and blameless in his sight.” (v. 14)
2. Keep in mind that our Lord’s patience with us is to give people chance/time to be saved (v. 15).
