“The LORD said unto my Lord, Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool” (Psa.110:1). “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of enemy and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Lk.10:19).
First one is a prophecy of David. Looking unto the Son, Jesus Christ, God the Father says, “Sit thou at my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool”. We, who were enemies (Col.1:21) are now made as the footstool of Jesus Christ, as His resting place. The same authority He has given to His people. God’s promise for us is that He will make all the enemies which are working against us as our footstool, so that as He has overcome and sat at the right hand of Father, we too must take victory over them and sit with Him in His throne (Rev.3:21). Let us see, what we have to do for this.
1. Ye shall tread down the wicked : “And ye shall tread down the wicked, for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I shall do this, saith the LORD of hosts” (Mal.4:3). Verse 1 says they are haughty and wicked. God says, I will bring the haughtiness and wickedness under your feet as dust and ye shall tread them. Last year due to such haughtiness and wicked characters, we might have faced many failures in our spiritual life. But it is possible when you fear His name and when God shall see your Godly fear, Sun of righteousness does righteous things and thereby you shall tread these characters. The spirit of wickedness may be work from our life itself and destroy our life. And from outside also through others we face such things, but if we fear His name, He will bring them under our footstool. Fear God and don’t fear the people who do wickedness.
2. They that despised thee and they that afflicted thee : “The sons also of them that afflicted thee shall come bending unto thee; and all they that despised thee shall bow themselves down at the soles of thy feet, and they shall call thee, The city of the LORD, The Zion of the Holy One of Israel” (Isa.60:14). God says, they that despised you and them that afflicted thee shall be under your feet and they shall bow before us. However, if you are afflicted or despised because of your mistake, you must be chastised. But without reason if anybody despise or afflict you, God will work in this manner. In other way, when you are being despised and afflicted by others without cause, God will raise you before them and they will be under your feet. When God bring them under your feet, they shall bow you and shall say you are Zion, City of the Holy One of Israel. When God shall shine upon us, we will be seen as a city or Zion. When God make you to shine, you should be a city upon a mountain and light in the dark world (Mat.5:15). This speaks that when you are despised and afflicted, God does a work of transformation and we grow from glory to glory. We are not telling it but the one who despised us will say, “you are the city of God”. God will be our everlasting light (Isa.60:20). When God makes us light, we should not keep darkness in our life. Hatred ness, bitterness, etc. are the works of darkness (Rom.1:20). We should praise God with a grateful heart and remove all such darkness from our life so that others may see us as God’s city.
3. Kings and Queens shall be your nurses : “And kings shall be thy nursing fathers, and their queens thy nursing mothers; they shall bow down to thee with their face toward the earth, and lick up the dust of thy feet; and thou shalt know that I am the LORD: for they shall not be ashamed that wait for me” (Isa.49:23). We are ordinary people, but kings and queens come under our feet and bow us. Satan is called “prince of this world”, “prince of the power of the air” (Eph.2:2); “rulers of the darkness of this world” (Eph.6:12). These powers bring hindrance in our spiritual life through the rulers of this world. Recently Christians faced such a trouble in India. World rulers may act as if they are favouring us but their intentions are wrong. Kings and Queens are nursing fathers and mothers. In order to live in this world peacefully, we need their favour (I Tim.2:1-2). They nourish us but their intention is to destroy us. However, we are precious before God. God sees their intention. He says, I will bring them under your footstool. But for this we should wait for His time. He says, I have a time to act and you wait for that time. Don’t be hasty. “He that believeth shall not make haste” (Isa.28:16). As per God’s plan, worldly rulers will work against God’s people but among the people of God, God wants to prepare a small group as His Bride and it is His intention that they should be preserved. Therefore, what we need is “faith to wait patiently for His time”.
4. Serpents and Scorpions under your feet : “Behold, I give unto you power to tread on serpents and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy: and nothing shall by any means hurt you” (Luke 10:19). Serpent speaks subtlety or deceiving spirit (2 Cor.11:3). He beguiled Eve by his subtlety. Scorpion also deceiving spirits and wicked powers (Rev. 9:5). Scorpion got poison in its tale. If we are careless and slackness it will hurt by its tale. With the tale Satan wants to bring down even the elect also (Rev.12:3). Its intention is to deceive the victorious man-child. Wherever we live, and live for the trust and doctrine and holiness, these spirits work against us. God says, ye shall tread them, because your names are written in heaven (v.20). When we buy a land, it got registered in our name. When we belong to heaven, our names are written there. Our names are written in the book of life as well as “lamb’s book of life”. We should have the faith and assurance that we belong to heaven, then these powers shall be under our feet. But when we do treacherously against God, our names will be scratched out from His book (Exo.32:33). You may not be knowing it but Satan knows this and he will attack you. After we are attacked only we realize that our names are not in His book. Don’t room to take place such incident in your case. There are festival Christians, Sunday Christians, seasonable Christians etc. and they cannot experience this blessing. Very often we should go to His presence and sanctify our life and make our calling and election sure. We should search ourselves whether we are in the faith or not (2 Cor.13:5).
5. Lion and young lion shall be under your feet : “Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet” (Psa.91:13). Lion and young Lion also speak Satan (I Pet.5:11). Serpent and Lion are therefore the name of Satan. Serpent deceives us cunningly and lion attack us straight away. If we have strength to resist, we become prey to him. God says you shall tread them. Lion speaks the spirit works from the ancient time and young serpent speaks the problems we face according to the situation. Devil work against the people of God from the beginning of this world and also as per the present circumstances too. Verse 9 says, because we make the LORD, even the most High, as our refuge and habitation, God will bring these spirits under our footstool. When the Spirit of God came upon Samson, he could easily tore a lion. When problems comes beyond our capacity, Spirit helps us.
6. “Synagogue of Satan” will be under our feet : “Behold, I will make them of the synagogue of Satan, which say they are Jews, and are not, but do lie, behold, I will make them to come and worship before they feet, and to know that I have loved thee” (Rev.3:9). This is told about church in Philadelphia. Synagogue of Satan will come and bow before us. Anointed people are God’s temple. But in that Satan also build his temple. Who are the members of his synagogue?
Ø They turned it as “house of merchandise” (John 2:14-16) and “den of thieves” (Mk.11:17). Love of money is the root cause of all evil (I Tim.6:12).
Ø Satan is the “accuser of God’s people” (Rev.12:10). God works to unite and Satan works to scatter (John 10:12). Psalmists says, “Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for the brethren to dwell together in unity” (Psa.133:1). By making divisions and separations, hatredness, etc. Satan build his temple. Such people are the tools of Satan.
Ø Our unsanctified characters sometimes work in us and thereby Satan’s temple is being built. When our self works, we are not concerned about others. Our name, fame, position, facility are important for us.
God says, I shall bring them under your feet. They says, they are Jew but not. They act as Christians, believers, godly people but not so. Believers of Ephesians church had this goodness. They tried them which say they are apostles, and are not, and have found them liars (Rev.2:2). Philadelphia means brotherly love. According to the name of the church, a group of believers lived in unity. V.8 says, though they had little strength, with that they kept the word. When we become weak, we deny the word of God. But, they wanted to live for the word of God or doctrine of Christ. When you stand for the word of God under all circumstances, Satan’s synagogue will be under your feet. Moreover, they will see that God loves them (v.9). Though the Israelites are few in numbers, everybody knows God loves them.
7. Satan will be under your feet : “And the God of peace shall bruise Satan under your feet shortly. The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen” (Rom.16:20). Root cause of all the above is Satan. God bring all those works under your feet and finally He brings Satan also under your feet. He also works in different manners.
Ø He takes away the seed, the word that was sown in the way side hearts (Mk.4:15). “Way side ground” speaks a life without surrendered to God. Nobody is responsible for it and even God is able to take control of it. Therefore, Satan takes out the word of God from such people.
Ø There was a woman bound by Satan for 18 years (Lk.13:11-16). He bind many of God’s people with some kind of infirmities.
Ø Satan wanted to sift Peter but Jesus prayed for him so that his faith fail not (Lk.22:31,32).
Ø Satan entered into the elected apostle Judah to betray Jesus. He is called as traitor. Satan makes many as traitors.
Ø Satan filled the hearts of Ananias and Sapphira to lie to the Holy Ghost and brought God’s wroth upon them (Act.5:3).
Ø When we are not willing to forgive Satan get opportunity in our life (2 Cor.2:10,11). Some people have no connection with forgiveness at all. In their life Satan works. To subdue the Satan under your feet, you should be willing to forgive and forget others, as Christ has forgiven you.
Ø Satan is the deceiver of the whole world (Rev.12:9). He will bring the whole world before you freely and lavishly. Satan tried Jesus also in this manner. Within a second of time, he showed the whole world to Jesus but He overcame by the word of God (Mat.4:8-10). Satan wants that people should worship him instead of God. That is why worldly people say, “Work is worship”. He will provide work even in Sundays and offer good overtime, promotion, etc. Do not deceive by him and loose our eternal inheritance.
God says, very soon I will bring Satan and his works under your feet so that you may tread them. But, we need obedience. St. Paul says, your obedience is come abroad unto all men, I am glad therefore on your behalf. He also counsels them by saying, be wise unto that which is good, and simple concerning evil (Rom.16:19).
If you obey God’s counsel and act wise unto that which is good and simple or fool concerning evil, God will bring your enemies under your footstool
