Jesus Is Wonderful

And his name shall be called,Wonderful."—Isa_9:6.

This is a prophecy concerning the birth of Jesus Christ the “Anointed One,” the Savior–Jesus Christ.

His birth would happen at a definite time and place in history and in a unique and marvelous way.

To appreciate what it means that Jesus is called "Wonderful," we must understand two important facets of the term. First, a wonder is, by definition, a miracle. If something is full of wonder, it is beyond human ability; it is something supernatural, miraculous. If something is wonderful, it is beyond what we are able to do. Therefore, the Lord is Wonderful because He, the Son of God,

accomplishing miracles that only He can do. Second: If something is full of wonder, it is beyond human reasoning-it may well be so wonderful and godly that we cannot sense it or see it, but can only trust that it is true. So, something is wonderful because it is beyond what we are able to sense.

The word wonderful in this passage literally means “incomprehensible.” The Messiah will cause us to be “full of wonder.” The word is much weightier than the way it’s used in normal conversation today—we say things are “wonderful” if they are pleasant, lovely, or the least bit likable. Jesus is wonderful in a way that is boggling to the mind.

Here the Prophet Isaiah records four names that would characterize Jesus Christ

(1) Wonderful Counselor.

(2) Mighty God.

(3) Everlasting Father.

(4) Prince of Peace.

This morning I only want to focus on one.

In Judges Chapter 3:18 it says that, When the angel of the Lord (doubtless none other than the Son of God) appeared to Manoah, and was asked his name, he said, "Why askest thou thus after my name, seeing it is secret or wonderful", Jdg_3:18.

The Hebrew word PELI - which is rendered "wonderful"

Wonderful - This word is an adjective, it is not describing the actual name of the angel. The only angel who names himself in Scripture is Gabriel however this is speaking of Jesus, His Person and His work.

Now this is the very title the prophet here is applying to our Savior and Redeemer: his name, he says, shall be called Wonderful.

How applicable is this title to Jesus!

He is wonderful in every aspect in which you can imagine.

As a member of the Godhead, he must of course be past finding out. Job 5:9 says,"He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted!" This is why we should seek the LORD because the LORD is all-powerful (omnipotent). He is God Almighty who does great works and performs miracles on behalf of His people. As the God of all power, He can rescue us from all of our troubles and suffering. (Job 5:8)

Jesus is wonderful in all that relates to his office as our great mediator we should thank God that Jesus is our Great High Priest.

I. When we Consider the wonderful Character of who Jesus is:

We understand that Jesus was manifest in the flesh.

We also understand that eternity united with humanity to bring about His existence.

Can you imagine Omnipotence dwelling in the weakness of humanity. The great and most high God assuming human form through the Virgin Birth, and being united, by the most mysterious of all unions, to a nature which had become degraded and worthless, by reason of Adams transgression.

Then, too, how wonderful, that not with standing that union, his own divinity and righteousness remained unaffected; he didn't partake of one feature of our corruptness, or of one sinful weakness or infirmity.

How marvelous indeed that the glory of the Lord of hosts should be enshrined in a tabernacle of flesh And dwell amongst us, that is the splendor of his divinity should be beheld, as the glory of the only-begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

In the mysterious formation of Christ's human nature, the Holy Ghost engaged his miraculous influence in a way unknown before, and produced a divinely glorious person, who is the wonder both of heaven and earth.

Luke 1:35 say's, And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.

Both Luke and Matthew state clearly and unmistakably that Jesus was born of a virgin (v. 27; Mt 1:18, 23, note). The Holy Spirit would work a miracle within Mary’s body, and the child would be conceived only by a supernatural act of God. As a result, Jesus would be completely “holy” (i.e., pure, perfect, spiritually complete and entirely devoted to God’s purposes, Lk 1:35); in his case, this meant that he came into the world unstained by sin (unlike all others born into the human race) and free from spiritual corruption. Luke 1:35

II. Jesus was Wonderful in the Offices which he assumed.

In times past under the O.T., God had separated his servants for various duties and pursuits. Some had filled the office of the prophet, others priests, and others the kings. Some were rulers over the people, others teachers, and others generals, or leaders of their armies.

In Jesus all these offices centered, on him all these duties devolved. He was emphatically the prophet of the most high God, the priest after the order of Melchisedec, and Zion's great and glorious king.

He came to rule over his people, to instruct the ignorant, and to be the illustrious captain of our souls. He possessed all the requisites required for these various offices, and that in the most perfect highest degree.

He was competently and effectively anointed with the spirit of the Lord, and He knew all things.

The unction of the Holy Ghost rested on his priestly head in all its sanctifying fullness or completeness.

Wisdom, Glory, Honor and Power, and His indispensable majesty contributed to elevate him as the King of kings, and Lord of lords.

His rule or governing was associated with perfect and infallible knowledge and spotless justice and equity (fairness or impartiality).

As a teacher, he spoke and taught as no man ever did before; he spoke with divine authority and power, so that the people were astonished at his doctrine, and cried out, "Never a man spake like this man."

And as the captain of God's host, he went forth to conflict, and spoiled all his foes making a show of it openly, and returned to his throne, as the great conqueror, He was a terror to his adversaries, yet He was mighty to save.

Oh the amazing combination of qualities in our wonderful Redeemer!

III. He is also wonderful in the Titles by which he is set forth.

He is the Great God, The Mighty God, and the one and only true wise God. He is the prince of peace, King of kings and the Lord of Host, He is the governor or ruler of the nations—and proprietor the real owner of the universe.

Psalms 24:1,2 says, The earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein. For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods. Before him the loftiest seraphim bend, and all the angels of God worship him.

Psalms 50: 10,11 the Lord says, For every beast of the forest is mine, and the cattle upon a thousand hills. I know all the fowls of the mountains: and the wild beasts of the field are mine.

The Father even spoke of him as his fellow, his eternal delight, and says unto him, "Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever."

All ascriptions of praise, and blessing, and honor, and power, and glory, and rule, and dominion, are presented to him by the intellectual hosts of glory, continuously without stopping.

The Bible lets us know that the Seraphim celebrate God's holiness and the joy of experiencing God's presence by leading worship in heaven. They constantly speak and sing about their love for God.

The Bible describes seraphim with wings flying around God's throne while calling out: "Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty. The whole Earth is full of His glory."

The word "seraphim" is derived from the Hebrew word saraph, which means "to burn." Seraphim angels burn with passion for God that ignites the fiery praise that emanates from them.

The songwriter wrote this and said, "Before his feet the countless hosts Of seraphim do fall, And, with profoundest awe, unite To crown him Lord of all."

This is why we sing , "All hail the pow’r of Jesus’ name! Let angels prostrate fall, Let angels prostrate fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him, crown Him, crown Him, crown Him; And crown Him Lord of all!

IV. Jesus is wonderful in all his Works.

His works are those of true and essential divinity.

He hath created all things by the power of his word, and he upholds all things by the word of his power.

Here it is then that Jesus appears before us in all the inconceivable greatness and grandeur of his boundless operations and works in Heaven.

Who then can understand his wonderful character, or by searching, find him out to perfection?

The Bible says, Oh the depths of the riches, both of the wisdom and knowledge of God!

V. Jesus' Love is wonderful.

If we consider the objects of his love, man who is sinful, man who is wretched, and unworthy yet God pitied, and had compassion on us.

This is why He says in Isaiah 1:18 says, Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

God’s love for his people is boundless, and he always gives his people a chance to repent and be restored. Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for sinners is the ultimate expression of that gracious love.

John 3:16,17 says, For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

The intensity of his love towards us is wonderful.

He loved us with a love altogether unparalleled and unknown to man. He loved us so much that he yielded himself as an atoning sacrifice for our guilt.

Jesus said in John 15:13 Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.

Jesus Loved us more than he loved the dignitaries of His day.

Biblical love involves more than just emotions and personal preferences. Love is the decision to compassionately, righteously, responsibly, and sacrificially seek the well-being of another.

What this tells me is that you and I can love people who we may not necessarily like because love is not dependent on your feelings.

That’s why Jesus can command you and I to “love your enemies” (Matt 5:44).

It’s true that love may include feelings of affection, and such feelings may develop over time. But it’s not driven by them. Love is driven by sacrifice for the welfare of others. And the greatest expression of love is to lay down one’s life for his friends (15:13).

That’s the kind of love Jesus modeled for us and I don't know about you but I want to know what that kind of love is and how it feels.

His love is that love which passeth all understanding.

It still boggles my mind that Jesus would lay down His life for humanity. I never knew what love was until I accepted Jesus Christ into my heart as my Lord and Savior. Say what you want but there is no greater love for anyone than what Jesus did for us when He died for our sins.

Romans 5:6-8 puts it this way: “For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us”

Jesus didn’t die for the righteous. He died for the sinner. It is very important for us to understand this love of Jesus Christ even if we can't, because unless we understand it as believers, we cannot be filled to the fullness with God Himself.

The Bible tells us that God is love. Love is the defining character of God. If anyone does not understand the love of Christ, he cannot love. You must appreciate how much Christ loves you in order for you to be able to love others.

Christ loves you unconditionally.

I have found out that as I get older that people will put terms and conditions on your love.... you know if you do this and such a such according to the way i want it to be done .......then i will do it but not until you do what i want you to do. Thats what I call conditional love .....some of yawl can keep that type of love .....you love me on Monday and Tuesday but you tripping Wednesday and Thursday....come Friday your whole attitude changes because its payday.

Listen Jesus didn’t wait for you to be righteous before He loved you. He loved you when you were messed up, tripped up, drunk up He loved you even when you were all the way turned up....when we were still sinners Christ died for us.

Understanding that helps you to love people, even when they appear unlovable. 1 John 4:8 says, “He who does not love does not know God, for God is love” (NKJV).

VI. Jesus sufferings were wonderful.

The Bible says that He was a "man of sorrows and acquainted with griefs."

How varied, yet how deeply intense were his sufferings! He suffered poverty, and hatred; he was bitterly persecuted, falsely charged, unjustly tried, and wickedly condemned to die. He was scourged, buffeted, spit upon, and nailed to the cross.

In dying, he was ridiculed, taunted, and mocked.

Earth and heaven seemed combined to cause the waters of affliction to cover his spirit, and the waves of trouble, in successive rolling billows, went over his blessed head.

His life in all its stages was wonderful.

From the announcement of his incarnation, to his last shout on the cross, there was one continued series of great and astonishing events. He spake as never man spake; he lived, and prayed, and blessed men, in a way peculiar to himself. He arose, from the dead and in a sky of blackness as He hung on a cross and the soldier pierced His side and out came blood and water....His body was streaked with the red crimson color of his precious blood—he set on Calvary's Hill elevated and His grave is still empty to this day.

VII. Wonderful in his Triumphs.

Colossians 2:15 says, And having spoiled principalities and powers, he made a shew of them openly, triumphing over them in it.

Another translation says, And having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.

Through Jesus' death and resurrection, He triumphed over all the demonic forces and satanic powers of the world.

He is the one who delivered us from the power of darkness, and translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son. Colossians 1:13

1 John 3:8 says, For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that he might destroy the works of the devil.

The Greek word that was translated “triumphing over” in Colossians 2:15 is especially significant. It means “to make an acclamatory procession” (ibid.). This is specifically referring to the way the Romans had a “triumphant procession” after they had defeated their enemies.

Upon conquering an enemy, the Romans would hold a parade. They would take the conquered king, strip him naked, and drag him through the crowd behind the conquering king or commander for all their subjects to see. He would be humiliated and insulted, but that’s not all. They would also cut off the thumbs of his hands and the big toes of both feet. This was to assure the subjects this enemy would never be a threat to any of them again. He could not hold a sword and he would never be able to run again. There was no need to fear him any more. Any rumor about him ever challenging Rome again would be scoffed at because the citizens had seen him in the parade.

The same thing happened to the devil. That’s what this verse is referring to. Jesus not only beat the devil, but He had a triumphant procession to display the devil to the universe as a totally conquered foe.

God is EXALTED, the devil is DEFEATED, and We have THE VICTORY ??

Jesus triumphed over sin and satan. Over death and the grave. Isn't He Wonderful!

This is why .......Amazing grace shall always be my song of praise. For it was grace that brought my Liberty. I'll never know just why he came to love me so … He looked beyond my faults and saw all my needs. I shall forever lift my eyes to Calvary To view the cross where Jesus died for me And how marvelous the grace that caught my falling soul He looked beyond my faults and saw all my needs.

Isn't He wonderful!

Isn't Jesus, my Lord, wonderful!

Eyes have seen, ears have heard, It's recorded in God's Word, Isn't Jesus, my Lord, wonderful!

Wonderful, Jesus is to me,

Counselor, Prince of Peace, Mighty God is He; Saving me, keeping me From all sin and shame; Wonderful is my Redeemer, Praise His name!

He's a wonder in my soul

He's a wonder in my soul

He's wonder in my soul bless His name!
