THE WONDERFUL COUNSELOR

Text: Isaiah 9:2- 7

Isaiah 9:2-7  The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.  (3)  You have multiplied the nation; you have increased its joy; they rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.  (4)  For the yoke of his burden, and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.  (5)  For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.  (6)  For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  (7)  Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Have you ever had questions where you wanted answers that were beyond your grasp? Have you ever wanted help beyond anything that you could provide? Well listen to this story I am about to share with you. The first of three things want you to think of tonight is questions.

QUESTIONS

A man tells the story about a special friend he made while just a boy. When quite young, Paul’s father had one of the first telephones in their neighbourhood. Paul was too little to reach the telephone, but used to listen with fascination when his mother talked to it.

Then Paul discovered that somewhere inside the wonderful device lived an amazing person – her name was “Information, Please” and there was nothing she did not know.

“Information, Please” could supply anybody’s number and the correct time. Paul’s first personal experience with this genie-in the-bottle came one day while his mother was visiting a neighbour. Amusing himself at the tool bench in the basement, Paul hacked his finger with a hammer. The pain was terrible, but there didn’t seem to be any reason in crying because there was no one home to give sympathy. He walked around the house sucking his throbbing finger, finally arriving at the stairway. ….

A click or two and a small clear voice spoke into Paul’s ear.

“Information.” “I hurt my finger,” Paul wailed into the phone. “Isn’t your mother home?” came the question. “Nobody’s home but me” Paul blubbered. “Are you bleeding?” the voice asked. “No,” he replied. “I hit my finger with the hammer and it hurts.” “Can you open your icebox?” she asked. He said he could. “Then chip off a little piece of ice and hold it to your finger,” said the voice. ….

Then, there was the time Petey, the pet canary died. Paul called and told her the sad story. >>>> [the lady that Paul knew as “Information please”] …. listened, then said the usual things grown-ups say to soothe a child, but Paul was inconsolable. He asked her, “Why is it that birds should sing so beautifully and bring joy to all families, only to end up as a heap of feathers on the bottom of a cage?” >>>> She [“Information Please"] must have sensed his deep concern, for she said quietly, “Paul, always remember that there are other worlds to sing in.” Somehow he felt better. ….

A few years later, on his way west to college, Paul’s plane put down in Seattle. He had about half an hour or so between planes. He spent 15 minutes on the phone with my sister, who lived there now. Then without thinking what he was doing, Paul dialled his hometown operator and said, “Information, Please.”

Miraculously, he heard the small, clear voice he knew so well, “Information.”

He hadn’t planned this but he heard myself saying, “Could you please tell me how to spell fix?” …. Then came the soft spoken answer, “I guess your finger must have healed by now.” Paul laughed. “So it’s really still you,” he said. “I wonder if you have any idea how much you meant to me during that time.”

“I wonder,” she said, “if you know how much your calls meant to me. I never had any children, and I used to look forward to your calls.” Paul told her how often he had thought of her over the years and asked if he could call her again when he came back to visit his sister. >>>>>> “Please do,” she said. “Just ask for Sally.” >>>>Three months later Paul was back in Seattle. A different voice answered, “Information.” He asked for Sally. “Are you a friend?” She asked.

“Yes, a very old friend,” Paul answered. “I’m sorry to have to tell you this,” she said. “Sally has been working part-time the last few years because she was sick. She died five weeks ago.” Before he could hang up she said, “Wait a minute. Is this Paul?”

“Yes,” Paul replied. “Well, Sally left a message for you. She wrote it down in case you called. Let me read it to you.” The note said, “Tell him I still say there are other worlds to sing in. He’ll know what I mean.”

As you have heard this story I want you to think about questions, God's providence through the Wonderful Counselor of our Lord and Savior< Jesus Christ!

PROVIDENCE

You hear a story like this and wonder what does that have to do with tonight’s Christmas Eve service. Do the words “Wonderful Counselor” give us a clue? We could have a message that would seek to explain all that this scripture talks about but these two wonderful words give us plenty to focus on. Don’t make the common mistake of thinking how the word “Wonderful” is an adjective because it is so much more it is His Name.” (J. Vernon McGee. Through the Bible. Paraphrased.). Much like “Information Please” aka Sally, who helped a little boy by the name of Paul through many of his experience as a little boy when he was alone God helps us.

Sally’s counsel that she provided to Paul lasted a long time but God’s Counsel to us was here before we were born! His Counsel is forever because His kingdom is forever! With God we are not alone for God is our Emmanuel our God with us. God comes to us through His only begotten Son whose name is Jesus Christ!

He is the Son that is given (Isaiah 9:6)! “For God so love the world that He gave His only begotten Son that who ever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

God gave us His Son who is the Great shepherd who looks for those who are like a sheep without a shepherd.

God gave us His Son who is the great light for all our darkness (Isaiah 9:6). In Him was life, and the life was the light of men (John 1:4)

WITNESS

God gave us His son because through His Son Jesus Christ, God is   “ …making known to us the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set forth in Christ 10  as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth. 11  In him we have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of him who works all things according to the counsel of his will (Ephesians 1:9 -11).

God gave us His Son to be the Prince of Peace so that through Him we could have that peace that passes all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Jesus came to help us with much more than we hurt our fingers or lose a pet or feel alone in doubt or grief or loss or broken hearts. Jesus came to save us, heal us, forgive and reconcile us to God. Jesus is our Immanuel with us our God with us always. John 3:16 reminds us that Jesus came for all of us because He is our God with us. Jesus wants us to be His disciples who witness to others about His Wonderful Counsel as our God with us always.

In the Name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
